About the Author

Rashid A. Saeed received his BSc in Electronics Engineering from Sudan University of Science and Technology (SUST) and his PhD in Communication Engineering from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). He served as a senior researcher at MIMOS Berhad and then at Telekom Malaysia R&D, where he was awarded the Platinum Badge for Outstanding Research Achievement Award. Dr. Saeed is currently with the Sudan University for Science and Technology (SUST).

Rashid has published and is responsible for over 70 research papers, tutorials, talks, and book chapters on the topic of UWB, cognitive radio, and radio resources management. He was awarded two US patents and has filed for eight more. Rashid is a certified WiMAX engineer (RF and core network) and is a Six Sigma–certified Black Belt, based on DMAIC++ from Motorola University. He is one of the contributors of IEEE-WCET wireless certification in its earlier stages, and is a senior member of the IEEE, IEM Malaysia, and Sigma Xi.

Stephen J. Shellhammer leads a cognitive radio project within the Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development Department. He is currently the chair of the IEEE 802.19 working group on wireless  coexistence, leading a project on TV white space coexistence. He was also the technical lead on spectrum sensing within the IEEE 802.22 working group. He is currently a member of the IEEE 802 executive committee and was also the chair of the IEEE 802.15.2 task group on wireless coexistence. Before joining Qualcomm, he was the Director of the Advanced Development Department at Symbol Technologies, and later worked at Intel in its wireless local area network division. Stephen has a BS in Physics from the University of California, San Diego; an MSEE from San Jose State University; and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was an adjunct professor at SUNY Stony Brook, where he taught graduate courses in electrical engineering. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

About the Author
K. Chayne is a graduate from Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied Psychology, Environmental Studies, and Marketing. She has a certification in Culinary Nutrition by Natural Gourmet Institute, and she is currently the Chief Marketing Manager of Ethical Writers Coalition.

Through her multidisciplinary studies and her multicultural background, Chayne developed a particular interest in the relationship between human health and world sustainability--an interest that eventually led her to write her debut nonfiction book, Thrive. By proposing a broadened perspective on health--one that encompasses the health of the mind, body, and our collective environment--Chayne hopes to empower her readers to cultivate meaning and create sustainability in all areas of life.

"Thrive" is a gem! It is truly a well-rounded introduction to sustainable living for the general population

Wow... I thought I was living a pretty healthy life until I read Thrive. I work out regularly and I don’t eat a lot of artificial or packaged foods. But Chayne has shown me how important taking care of both our mental and environmental health is as well, beyond just fitness & dieting which I was more focused on. The biggest takeaway for me is that we need to consider the “indirect health effects” of our consumer choices when trying to improve our health as well, like how our food choices affect our planet which then affect us, or how toxic chemicals from our clothes can pollute our water and then harm us.

As a busy person and someone who is relatively new to "sustainable living," this book has been the perfect straightforward, fluff-free guide to help me get started and become more conscious in all aspects of my life. With the way the book is sectioned off topic by topic, I liked how I could easily skip the parts I felt I already knew and dive right into other sections. 

If you’re thinking about getting this book, my suggestion from reading other reviews would be this: 

If you’re already an environmental or health expert and are looking for more than a fun/leisurely read, you might be disappointed. But if you want a well-rounded intro to sustainable living, want to take health more seriously and approach it in a more wholesome way, or just want a feel good read, I think you’d find it really valuable like I did.

The book is fairly interesting, but I didn't find ...

The book is fairly interesting, but I didn't find any of the insights in it particularly eye-opening--perhaps because I already consider myself an environmentalist and try to apply that to every aspect of my life. My main problem with this book is that it is all for environmental consciousness when buying clothing, body products, etc, but says NOTHING about the environmental impacts of animal agriculture. I don't understand how a book can claim to be a guide to an environmentally conscious lifestyle without so much as mentioning animal agriculture's devastating effects on the environment.

An old textbook that is a must read

I believe this is may be older than many of you. This is a simple read that goes very deep. No agenda's etc. but a well written work that is worth your time.

The price was very low for the knowledge gained. It is actually more interesting than some of the idiocy put forth by today's 'historians' and imparts knowledge with a flow that just keeps you turning page after page.

The subject matter may limit interest with many but for the price give it a shot. It may open doors for you in areas that you may enjoy.

If you are a parent and wish to read some things to your kids - you may find it interesting to read reality that may sound like fiction. Anyway enjoy & expand your horizons.

Excellent overview of ancient Western civilization's development

I first used this book as a freshman in high school as my ancient history text. Since that time I have studied ancient history a great deal. Although there are a few dated details... this is still the best general ancient history you can buy. It is well written, and not boring, which is unusual for such a work. If you would like to get a good general understanding of the development of Western civilization you can't do much better.

About the Author

Sally Sedgwick is Professor of Philosophy and Affiliated Professor of Germanic Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1985, and until 2003 was on the faculty at Dartmouth College. She has held visiting positions at Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, and the universities of Bonn, Bern and Luzern. She has been awarded grants by NEH, ACLS, DAAD, and the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung. Her publications include numerous essays on Kant and Hegel, and the monograph, Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals: An Introduction (2008). She is editor of The Reception of Kant's Critical Philosophy: Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel (2000). In the academic year of 2009-10, she was President of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association.

Very carefully argued

This book is mostly about Hegel's earlier Jena works and the critique Hegel develops there of Kant and also of empiricists such as Locke and Hume. It is a wonderful summary of Kantian metaphysics and Hegel's reaction to it (as it is gleaned from these Jena works). It is a pleasure to read. If I have any complaints, the author purports to rescue Hegel from the criticism that Hegel is a shallow reader of Kant. No names are named. I would be curious to know who would dare to make such a suggestion, since it is very apparent to me that Hegel reads Kant with laser clarity. Also, the Science of Logic does not seem to figure in this book, even though the Science of Logic profoundly interacts with Kant and can even be viewed as a running commentary on Kant. But perhaps that's a separate book project--and a formidable one. Given the book's intended scope, it is a very impressive achievement and a great contribution..

Obviously, this book will appeal to a small portion of Amazon customers- those doing genealogy work on ancestors who lived in the "Dutch Fork" area of South Carolina, near the towns of Irmo, Ballentine, etc. Since my paternal ancestors all settled and lived in this area, Rake's book has, in the few days I've had it, proven to be a treasure of information. I found information on several ancestors that I've been puzzled over for months. I live far away from SC, so this is the next best thing to being able to comb the cemeteries myself.

Here are the 4 areas he included in his survey:
1)Within the perimeters of the Fairfield Country line on the north, I-20 on the south, the Kershaw Co line on the east, the Rte 321 on the west.

2)Within the perimeters of the Fairfield Co line on the north, I-20 on the south, Rte 321 on the east, and the Broad River on the west.

3)Those cemeteries and graves within Ft Jackson

4)Within the perimeters of the Newberry Co line on the north, I-20 on the south, the Broad River on the east, and the Lexington Co line on the west.

At the beginning of each section is an index of the cemeteries. Each cemetery's location is described and the date the survey was made. Names, dates, military rank, organizations,and other information noted on the graves are included. Also, when able, there are notations for father, mother, daughter, son, etc for family groupings. Information that is illegible is denoted by a line____________. There are also notes about graves that have been moved. Surnames are listed normally, not in CAPITALS.

At the back of the book, there is an index of surnames, but individuals are not listed. For example, under "Smith" there are page numbers where that surname appears. At the front, there is a list of abbreviations and a short foreword by the author. It appears that most surveys were done in the 1980's or prior, although many were done in the 1990's. I have not run across any before 1999.

Names in each cemetery are not listed alphabetically,so finding a particular person can be time consuming and somewhat tedious unless you know which cemetery to look in. But, in running my finger down the list of names, I always come across one that is familiar and I have to be careful not to get sidetracked. If this was available digitally, so one could search for individuals, it would be perfect.

I've had it less than a week, and there are already numerous papers marking places, notes in the margins, and family groups marked. Worth every penny of its cost, in my opinion. Thank you, Mr. Rakes!

The face in medieval sculpture was an exploration in human identity, marked not only by evolving nuances of style but also by the ongoing drama of European history. The book is organized into seven thematic sections, including “Iconoclasm” and “The Stone Bible,” which explore the process of reconnecting these works to their origins using both traditional art historical methods as well as the latest scientific technology. An essay on medieval physiognomy by the distinguished scholar Willibald Sauerländer introduces the volume.
