About the Author
Henry Thomas Hamblin (1873-1958) is famous for classic works of the mid-twentieth century which demonstrate his technique of 'applied right thought'. He and his friend Joel S. Goldsmith (1892-1964) were the Jack Kornfields of their generation. Both Hamblin and Goldsmith bridge Christianity and more recent 'new age' philosophies and have been the catalyst for many to move from old patterns of thought to new ones. Tens of thousands of people attest to the effect Hamblin's words have had on their lives. This unique book will add many more to that list.

An Eighty year Old Approach to Human Transformation that Remains Fresh and Relevant

Henry Thomas Hamblin was an interesting person whose life and teachings are not that well known.
He was an English optician who lived from 1873 to 1958 and who founded the Science of Thought Review - later known as New Vision - that was based on the principle of Applied Right Thinking. For more than forty years he lived near Chichester, West Sussex, in England, and he became known locally as the Sussex Saint. The essence of the teaching is that we can transform our lives if we change our thinking. Nothing new there, but in its day the concept was still quite novel. Although this idea - "change your thinking and change your life" - has become a staple of the self-help movement, until Hamblin and a few of his contemporaries, the idea had lain dormant for centuries.
But what was different was his analysis that the key problem was that most of out thinking patterns are formed by habit and selfish pleasure-based reactions. His solution was to re-train the mind to adopt thinking based on love and surrender, with the ultimate idea that this would bring us ever closer to God.
This book consists of a twenty-six lesson course that was originally given out through classes that Hamblin held at his home - Bosham House - during the early 1920's. This was a time when many were turning to spiritual teachings as the world emerged from the shadow of the Great War and the influenza pandemic that killed millions more in its wake. Many people at the time felt that peace was fragile and that below the "Roaring Twenties," lay more coming danger and conflict.
The book contains practical exercises as well as letters that Hamblin wrote to each of his students. I've know only a few people who had direct experience of Hamblin, but they all said that he had something "extra." He was not just giving out information; he touched the lives of his students in a very deep and profound way. It is remarkable that all these years later the letters still exert a profound effect.
The book is a very detailed guide for anyone seeking to cultivate a deeper understanding of how prayer, meditation and affirmation can help bring us into harmony with the "Infinite Good" in our individual lives. His teaching also emphasized that this inner work would help foster a sense of connection and cooperation with others. Hamblin always said that his main inspirations were the Bible and the Pilgrim's Progress, but that he also just Knew some things. That quickly becomes clear as you read his words.
Naturally, some of the language is very 1920's, but there is an advantage in that: it makes the reader slow up a bit and drink in the wisdom.
For anyone on a spiritual path, you may find a great deal to think about, and you may be surprised at how many of the lessons and letter feel almost as if they have been written for your personally.
