Hidden Treasure
By cedarell
First, a disclaimer. I worked with the author for many years. But that isn't why I'm reviewing the book and giving it five stars. In fact, I'm not really reviewing the book but trying to draw attention to it because it contains something very rare: a first hand account of the discovery of a hidden likeness. This is in a chapter called Monument Valley. The author describes looking at a number of uranium deposits whose origins were unclear and seeing a relationship which showed them to be like seemingly different deposits elsewhere whose origins were better understood. It describes his feelings as he saw the likeness. Joseph Bronowski (Science and Human Values) describes this as finding unity in variety, and says that when this happens the "heart misses a beat". You can feel that in the author's description.

It is like looking for hens' teeth to find descriptions of such moments but the knowledge that such moments are waiting to be experienced must be the motivation for most great scientific work. Steven Weinberg describes such a moment in Facing Up in the chapter The Red Camaro. It is a far cry from a uranium deposit to the electroweak theory, but the moments of discovering the hidden likenesses must feel the same.

If only students had an inkling of this feeling when deciding career paths.
