Um dieser Frage nachgehen zu können, soll vorab definiert werden, was man allgemein unter Aufklärung versteht. Anschließend wird kurz erläutert, was man im 18. Jahrhundert unter dem Begriff Skandinavien im geographischen Sinne verstand, um dann auf den Verlauf des Großen Nordischen Krieges zu skizzieren, der die Voraussetzung für den „nordischen Sonderweg“ bildet.
Der Hauptteil der Arbeit beschreibt die Aufklärung in Dänemark und Schweden. Dabei sollen zum einen typisch „skandinavische“ Elemente der Aufklärung beschrieben werden, zum anderen auf den Einfluss Kontinentaleuropas auf Skandinavien im Zeitalter der Aufklärung eingegangen werden. Außerdem sollen die Unterschiede der dänischen und der schwedischen Aufklärung aufgezeigt werden. Am Ende dieses Kapitels werden noch einige wichtige skandinavische Aufklärer genannt, um abschließend in einem Fazit die Ergebnisse der Arbeit zu präsentieren.
