Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French existentialist philosopher, intellectual, and social theorist best known for her writings on existentialist ethics and feminist existentialism, as well as for her infamous polyamorous relationship with fellow French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre. World-renowned for her metaphysical novels She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, de Beauvoir also wrote a number of essays on philosophy, politics, and social issues. Great Teaching Text for Existentialism

This is an excellent and original work of philosophy, closely related to the contemporary ideas of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty, but quite unique and not reducible to their work. I find it to be one of the best books (indeed one of the few books) to use to teach existentialism in introductory classes. I recommend skipping the first chapter, because it is self-consciously "literary," (in an obscure way), and contributes nothing essential to the book. Chapter 2 is the core of the book, and it is an incredible and compelling piece of writing that brilliantly discusses the distinctive nature of childhood experience, and then develops a dialectic of "bad faith" that offers a sort of system for understanding personality types--ways, that is, of embracing (imperfectly) our freedom. The third chapter studies politics in a very thoughtful way, (though I find it is often lost on my intro students because they just don't have enough experience of political realities to appreciate the significance of what she is saying). This text is often wrongly belittled by commentators (and, indeed, de Beauvoir herself wrongly said disparaging things about it), but I think it is one of the classic texts of existential phenomenology and deserves to be widely read.

"There is no more obnoxious way to punish a man than to force him to perform acts which make no sense to him, as when one empties and fills the same ditch indefinitely, when one makes soldiers who are being punished march up and down, when one forces a schoolboy to copy lines."

What will the modern man do when slapped in the face with the absurdity of his own existence? Become an adventurer, passionate, serious, intellectual? Where will his values come from when there are no values -- how will he create them out of nothing? Is it easier to adopt a game full of illusions created by someone else? de Beauvoir forces the reader to come face to face with the absolute absurdity of the human condition, and then, proceeds to develop a dialectic of ambiguity that will enable the reader not to master the chaos, but to create with it. This book will probably alter many well-rooted philosophical perceptions -- so, reader beware! I could have done without the dramatic image of how the Nazi's conditioned themselves to become insensitive to human suffering (de Beauvoir used as an extreme example), but oh well... This book is a keeper, and very quotable! Highly recommended, especially for those diving into the Realm of Existentialism! --Katharena Eiermann, 2006

By exploring the meaning of "existence before essence" and the fundamental reality of choice, Beauvoir presents the reader with a livable program for life in the modern and multiplicit world; namely existentialism. Ethics is both concise and poetic, maintaining a clarity that Being and Nothingness lacks. The Second Sex is essentially an entailment of the ideas explored in this book. Few other philosophers of the 20th century were able to combine practical philosophy and rigorous metaphysics with such eloquence.

Love it and haven't even seen it yet. If its even half the quality of his prior books, it is a must buy.
If you are a dBASE developer, a beginner or expert, Ken's books are a must read.
For the beginner, its a must have in order to learn to program in dBASE professionally. He breaks down development into parts so even the beginner can produce expert applications.
For the expert, new advancements in the development platform is almost impossible to keep up with without Ken's books breaking it all down.

Use open source product documentation. Much better at zero cost.

Of the many books that author Pete Loshin has written in the past decades, a number of them are completely comprised of public domain information that he gathered. Titles such as Big book of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) RFCs, Big Book of IPsec RFCs, Big Book of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) RFCs, and others, are simply bound copies of publicly and freely available information.

In two of his latest books Practical Anonymity: Hiding in Plain Sight Online and Simple Steps to Data Encryption: A Practical Guide to Secure Computing, Loshin doesn't do the wholesale cut and paste like he did from the RFC books, but on the other side, these titles do not offer much added information than the reader can otherwise get online.

The software tools detailed in the books are open source tools; and the open source community has done a fantastic job of not only making the software free, but creating documentation that is also free and rivals commercial technical guides.

In Simple Steps to Data Encryption: A Practical Guide to Secure Computing, Loshin attempts to provide an overview of why you need encryption, and how to use it. The book barely succeeds at doing that, but there are certainly other titles that do it either more articulately or at least without charging for it. In addition, the book seems like it was rushed to print, and could have used a better technical editor.

In fact, the book starts with an overview of how to use GnuPG (Gnu Privacy Guard). And like Tor, there are numerous free references at the GnuPG documentation site that provide many useful references.

At $30-, this book provides very little added value to the free online documentation.

Short, Readable, and Informative

Peter Loshin's Simple Steps to Data Encryption (Syngress, ISBN: 9780124114838) contains just under 100 pages, but those pages are easy to read and contain a lot of useful information. The book focuses primarily on GnuPrivacy Guard (GnuPG) and how to use it to protect data in motion. But it also teaches about cryptography and encryption addressing issues such as generating and managing public keys, key servers, signatures, and even encrypting data at rest using FDE on modern operating systems.

The book is framed as a story about Bob, who lives in a mythical country named Sylvania and has reasons to keep sensitive data from prying eyes. As the story unfolds, Bob learns how to use GnuPG to encrypt and protect his data.

Although it is not really for those who already possess a firm knowledge of cryptography, Simple Steps to Data Encryption offers a nice introduction to the topic in an approachable and easy to digest manner.

How to Win Friends & Influence People for Business

Even if you don't agree with people who are characterized as political or power-hungry by nature, you have to work with them. This book wasn't written to encourage unethical behavior but instead explains why people are programmed to behave as they do and how to work in a world that isn't always fair.

This book is empowering. If you read this and think, "This is depressing. I'll never play these games." you're missing the point. If you don't understand the games, you will always, always, always lose. Understanding the rules helps you stay above the fray rather than being walked over and rudely surprised later. You won't find any other resource that will candidly map out organizational politics and power like this -- especially one this compelling and joyful to read.

I agree with everyone who says this is must-read material and since finishing it two weeks ago, I've already loaned my dogeared copy to two others. Incredible.

Concise and Direct Analysis of Power and How it is Exercised

Jeffrey Pfeffer's "Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't" has been called by some a "'Prince' for our times" (referring to Machiavelli's famous tract).

That is a fairly apt description. Pfeffer is interested in power as it is practiced. As such (and to the dismay of some of my students and some reviewers on this site), the author seeks to describe the world as it is and how many successful people in it maneuver. Pfeffer breaks down aspects of power such as communication, self-promotion, acting, use of anger as well as other facets. These are outlined and described (with examples) in easy to digest chapters. This work is a mix of study (the nature of power) as well as "how to." For anyone involved in organizations or other political situations where there is competition for resources and rewards, this book is very useful to understand how those who are competitors are likely to behave and act. And while it is true that many view (at least some of the time) these competitions though the lens of ethics, others do not. Even for the ethically minded, this book is very useful in order to gain an understanding of raw power and how it often is practiced.

Pfeffer is a skilled writer who is direct as well as explanatory. An advantage over Machiavelli's work is that Pfeffer speaks to the reader in today's language. Whereas The Prince takes some thought in order to translate the mores and references of the Renaissance for understanding, "Power...." is crystal clear in its precepts.

No nonsense, well researched book that tells you how the world IS not how we wish it was.

WARNING: this book does not dispense "How to Win Friends and Influence People" type of advice. Don't expect to leave feeling all warm and "inspired". Rather, prepared to be motivated and expected to act. The author, basing his rules on well researched business practices, lays it out on the table for you in a no nonsense way. His anecdotes are from real life examples that he, as a well respected business scholar, has seen firsthand or researched in detail. With that being said, others state that this book is cold and callous. I do not believe that to be the case. While Mr. Pfeffer is straight and to the point, outlining the way the world is instead of the way we wish it was, he does not advocate, carrying on day after day as a ruthless jerk. In fact, he cautions against this. Anyone with any sense and decency would not behave in such a manner.

If you want to read a no nonsense book with advice that you can implement today. This is it.

Disappointed

I have been managing patients with chronic non-specific LBP for over a decade. The book is well written, however I find the fact that Peter O'Sullivan should have had at least a chapter in this book. I cannot understand the reason for this not to happen, apart from big personal differences amongst the authors and O'Sullivan. I'm not saying here that I prefer one to another, but a book that is entlited state of the art and science cannot levae O'Sullivan's views and experience out of the question.
More chapters should have been dedicated in providing treatment suggestions and programmes.

Good book for the study of motor control of the lumbar spine.

This book is very interesting as it explores all the dimensions of motor control for the lumbar spine. All the theory is presented in a very wide spectrum of themes concerning motor control. The authors attempt to expose all aspects of motor control of lower back, including the most applied and clinical KNOW HOW of motor control of the lumbar spine. The only BUT is exactly what the title doesn't specify: it concentrates its study of spinal control on the lumbar spine, not the spine or the back. This is a very good book for newcombers in the field.

Excellent

Outstanding book for the Stans, especially in 2014 with the newest edition. I traveled through Kyrgyzstan and also brought the Bradt Kyrgyzstan book, which had nearly 300 pages on Kyrgyzstan alone. Nevertheless, I found the Lonely Planet chapter on Kyrgyzstan (less than 100 pages) more useful. The info was right on the mark and better organized. I also used the book for Astana, Kazakhstan, and again LP did a great job with that. Highly recommend for anyone traveling to the Stans.

Recommendable, but check out the maps twice before you go

The guide is very good, as the usual LP standard goes. We found everything we needed concerning our travel, the only downside are sometimes inaccurate big maps and sometimes the mentioned cities would need map (i.e. there's a accommodation mentioned in the big city, but there's no map of the city). The phone numbers are sometimes outdated, but that seemed to be an occassional flaw which cannot be helped as people in Uzbekistan seem to change numbers rather quickly.
Definitely recommended for traveling the region, but if you are on a bike/in the car, get an extra map for each country you might want to pass, as it's not very reliable in the book and borders in this part of the world matter.

It is absolutely marvelous. Interesting, fun, stunning, civilized. Go with MIR or Road Scholar whose trips are run by MIR . MIR is great. Road Scholar is a frustrating, badly run, overpriced, low brow joke. MIR is excellent. The guidebook is a good supplement for use on any tour. But because of very difficult border crossings , best to go with a tour

Pricey, but nothing special...

For what little you get, this anthology is OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced. There is absolutely nothing in it by way of musical examples that would not be available on-line in the public domain, with either the same or similar cuts. What this amounts to is a shameful "crutch" for LAZY (or ignorant) jazz instructors to lean upon in lieu of doing their own research and putting together their own collection of teaching materials. In fact, the ratio of cost to value is so skewed, a suspicion arises there may be some kind of kick-back scheme to reward the instructors who require their captive students to buy the anthology, and thereby also buy into the scam. I don't know. I can only wonder. And while I am wondering, I will also ponder why enterprising students don't use their intelligence to figure out how to share the materials, all legally and [of course] without copyright infringement.

Sugerman ( No One Here Gets Out Alive ) analyzes the phenomenal success of rock band Guns n' Roses and the larger meaning of rock 'n' roll in this thought-provoking work. Here, the same artistic impulse which drove Byron, Poe and Rimbaud is attributed to vocalist W. Axl Rose and guitarist Slash: "the Romantic hero challenged death with excess and the rock artist is entitled to do the same." In Sugerman's view, seeking freedom even through excess is a noble pursuit, and Guns n' Roses is the best present-day embodiment of the Dionysian spirit; he also maintains that drug use, which is seen as both the creator and destroyer of the drive to break with dogma and imposed morality, is the core of Guns n' Roses' appeal. Axl and Slash's controversial behavior is enthusiastically catalogued but not necessarily condoned--Sugerman is vague and somewhat apologetic about Axl's well-publicized sexism, racism and homophobia. G N' R for the Intellectual

What makes this book interesting is that its not just about the band, their music and off stage exploits, which is what most rock biographies are all about. Rather, this book is about defining the sociological and psychological impact of Rock N' Roll on modern American culture and the role that Guns N' Roses have played in shaping and defining such cultural perceptions. In this book, Sugarman compares the music and exploits of Guns N' Roses to everything from mythology to philosophy to psychology to modern historical events to convey this thesis. The truth is, what I really liked about this book, is that after finishing it, I felt that I not only learned about Guns N' Roses, but more so about the cultural importance of rock n' roll and the impact that it's had in shaping the modern American cultural landscape of the late 20th century.
Therefore, if you're interested in really learning about why G N' R is such an important band and your interest in music extends beyond what you hear on a CD, than I strongly recommend this book.
A word of caution...I have to say that this is not your typical sex, drugs and rock n' roll biography. If you're looking for a book that's just about the drunken exploits of Axl and the band,you'd best look else where. Not that this book does not cover off on these subjects, its just that there is much more to this book than that.

More than just metal.

As a huge Guns 'N Roses fan, I was slightly disappointed that the book did not contain more biographical information on the band. However, I did learn many interesting facts about G 'N R that I had not previously known. Despite that, the bottom line is that this book contains so much more in terms of intellectual presentation. What the book lacked in G 'N R insight, it made up for with a brilliant blend of mythology, philosophical ideas, and historical references. This book has definately enhanced my knowledge in the areas that it touched upon, such as the effects of drugs and alcohol on the creative process, the origins of rock 'n roll, etc. If you are a Guns 'N Roses fan who merely wants the gossip on their private lives, this is probably not the book for you. On the other hand, if you want to expand your overall horizons, it is a must-read.

The Days of Wine and Roses

Man this book is such a guilty pleasure for me. I love how Sugerman can weave Rimbaud/Baudelaire, William Blake, William Burroughs, Jim Carroll and Axl Rose. A lot of us were living on the nighttrain to the "Palace of Wisdom" back in 1989. That was my season in hell with GNFR as the soundtrack. Although Axl has revamped them as a karaoke group, it makes you wonder what might have been. Guns and Roses was truly onto something legendary if they didn't implode. But hey wasn't it inevitable. No one in music today is even close to the insanity of pre-illusion Guns. Only the Lizard King's Homer could mythologize the late 1980s of the Sunset Strip. RIP Danny

Introduction

In our everyday lexicon, words such as "toning," "aerobic," and "lifting" bring to mind a workout at the gym. Other terms--such as "study," "syllabus," and "exam"--suggest we are talking about school. However, certain words transcend the environments with which they are most closely linked. In the past few years, the term "core" has entered the collective consciousness. We hear of toning the core at the gym, firing from the core on the athletic field, getting up from a desk at a sedentary job to engage the core, and strengthening the core at the physical therapist's office. With so many uses and meanings, core is justifiably here to stay.

What Exactly is the Core?

The term "core" refers to the muscles in the lower trunk area that work together to provide support and mobility, enabling all bodily movement. The core includes the rectus abdominis, or six-pack, which tenses the abdominal wall by contracting the abdominal muscles. Surrounding your abs are the internal and external obliques, which allow you to bend from side to side and rotate your torso. The Christmas tree–shaped erector spinae is situated behind the abdominals, at the lower back, and is responsible for spinal stabilization and spinal movement. Lastly, the hip flexors act as the foundation of this muscular complex, supporting movement in the pelvic area.

Essentially, the core is the center of the body and is key in terms of performance, functionality, and longevity. Improving the core's aesthetic and mobility necessitates consistent and diligent effort. Getting the most out of your core requires more than just the right diet. Core exercises enable the skeleton, muscles, and joints to work together properly, as well as offering a combination of strengthening, stretching, balancing, realigning, and fat loss that nutrition alone would not achieve.

By maintaining a strong core, you also lend optimal support to ancillary (assisting) muscles. Indeed, the core is so central to your body's total movement that it is called upon when firing each and every muscle. When you are in the middle of a squat, for example, your core is engaged to maintain the integrity of the vertical movement; when pressing dumbbells overhead, the core keeps the body straight on, as opposed to curved. Have you ever worked your triceps and discovered later that your midsection was quite sore? That's your core at work.

Excellent, simple presentation of core anatomy in relation to exercise

Review Anatomy of Core Stability by Hollis Lance is easy to read. The information is complete and usefully presented. I especially like having the models pictured beside the diagrams so surface anatomy can often be correlated with muscular anatomy. The models look like fit average people, not body builders or hulks so we can compare to ourselves. My only suggestion would be speedos rather than long shorts so more surface anatomy, especially thighs and lower abs could be seen.

The pictures and diagrams are large and clear and surprisingly uncluttered for anatomy drawings. The text, is informative without being pedantic. Also the text is sparse and helpful, mostly consisting of brief comments as to level, time to complete, benefits, restrictions and in some cases modifications possible. The exercises included, while not encyclopedic, are complete enough. There are some suggested workouts or collections of exercises with specific goals given at the end which look good.

This a good buy in the rash of "anatomy" books coming out now.

Very helpful tool

This book had lots of new exercises and gave me a new way to look at and improve my core stability. Some of the exercises looked pretty simple but they were challenging. I liked the way the exercises were explained and the photographs made it easy to follow. At the end of the book there are six great workouts set out for you.
