Beautiful & Touching

One of my favorite authors and novels of all times! I read this novel many years at high school. I learned so much from this book. It had a great impact on my life; made me reflect on the true meaning and value of life. I laughed, cried, suffered, and struggled with the main characters. My eyes are tearing up while remembering the touching and heartbreaking story of this lovely and humble Puerto Rican family who traveled through hell in pursuit of a better life and the "American Dream". A question for you readers: "Was following their dreams and "riches" really worth it?" The Oxcart, La Carretta

LA CARRETA ("THE OXCART")... AN EXCELLENT PUERTO RICAN DRAMA

"La Carreta" is an outstanding example of one of Puerto Rico's foremost contemporary playwrights, René Marqués. It's about the transitions of a Puerto Rican family from a rural area to the Metropolitan area (San Juan), and eventually to a "barrio" in New York City. The author portrayes the inherent conflicts of such a shift in a straightforward manner and in simple Spanish language. Even though the theme is uniquely Puerto Rican, it has universal appeal.
The book presents biographical data and theatre techniques for staging, coupled with the historical, sociological, psychological, economic, and political background of the play.
"La Carreta" itself pleads for a return to the "land which gives life" as opposed to the false values of a mechanized society which can only degrade and destroy an individual and rob him/her of dignity.
The shift in the role of the Puerto Rican child from the customary responses in Puerto Rico to the example set by their American peers is one example of cultural differences and is seen in the play. The American child, encouraged to ask "why", to be aggresive, self-reliant, and independent, was not the ideal fostered by Puerto Rican parents. One example of confrontation in the play is the role of the Puerto Rican girl idealized in her culture as a virgin until marriage. Juanita rebels against this image, turning to the streets and prostitution, thus undermining the family's traditional esteem and prestige in the community.

Saw the play now I have the book

I saw the play in one of those High School field trips and cried like a baby. I looked for the book and found it. I feel very identified with this play\story\book. I'm glad I found it.
