Excellent

This guy was a loan analyst (a/k/a "underwriter") for a number of banks during the lead-up to the crash in 2008 and he's confirmed many of my suspicions about real estate developers, bankers, real estate agents, crackheads and other people lie that.

How the sausage was made

While this book could have been better edited, I won't bother with those trivial details. In my view, anyone with savings or investments in U.S. financial institutions should read this book.

This is a well-told account of how the housing bubble came into being and then popped. Mr. Clarey tells the story from his point of view as an analyst/underwriter at a credit union and then at some local banks in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. He doesn't name these, so we have to take his account on his word.

Clarey's description of how real estate developers continued building in the face of a housing glut, of how bankers continued to loan them money in order to earn the loan commissions, of how loans were poorly documented because they were made to "good guys" or because they "helped the little people" is like a tour through a financial butcher shop.

These folks did all these things despite easily available data showing there was no need for more housing stock. My wife and I both wondered who in the world was buying all the new houses in St. Louis ten years ago. It's not as though the old ones were being torn down (generally) as the new ones were built. Continually rising prices in the face of an expanding supply? That's hardly what you'd expect from Econ 101.

Clarey also describes how mortgage brokers and banks worked the system in similar ways for existing home sales, although I don't believe he was personally involved in that business. Mortgages were poorly documented - or sometimes not documented at all - because they were promptly resold to 'collateralize' investment bonds. The mortgage originators got their commissions, the bond sellers got their commissions and the CDO buyers got burned.

The author has a great grasp of financial fundamentals. I used to wonder myself about the phenomenal run-up in stock prices over the last 30 years. I recall a friend of mine asking me in the early 80s, "When do you think the Dow will break 1000?" In the late 90s I called him and asked, "So, Mike, when do you think the Dow will break 10,000?"

My conclusion was that there was too much money chasing too few investments and that maybe this was due to the way the tax code for retirement plans was written. In the U.S., tax-deferred retirement savings can only be invested in stock and bond markets. What else explains a 10-fold gain in the DJIA in less than 20 years? There's been nothing like it in the history of the U.S. exchanges. (Search the web for "historic DJIA" and look at the period since 1980.)

Mr. Clarey mentions this tax law factor himself as one reason for the bubbles of recent history; in particular, how all the retirement funds in the market drove the dot com bubble and then led to a ready market to buy CDOs (bundled mortgages) at the start of the housing bubble.

An entertaining and informative ride

The anecdotes, along with the character of the writer, make this a very interesting read. Someone who hasn't been paying attention to what has been going on inside businesses in the United States might be shocked at what they read. Others, like me, who are involved in different industries but still see the attitudes of the decisionmakers in everyday life will recognize the gross and terrible mistakes that were made, as part of some kind of bizarre cultural movement, in this book.

My only difficulty with this book is a minor one, and that is, in the kindle version the margins on the charts are a few pixels too short and thus the first bit on some chart axes are clipped. I can infer the values there from what is left, so it's only a minor annoyance. I think it might be a fault of the kindle editing support itself, but I'm not sure.

Musicians, writers, artists and fans alike should read this candid biopic into the lives of John & Yoko during the prime of their lives and populariy. They were involved. They were controversial. They were naive. They were important and outspoken... and most of all, vulnerable. Anthony Fawcett was more than sympathetic... he was privileged to find himself involved at a time when the magic of John Lennon transcended who he even thought he was. Forever dispells the silly myth that Yoko, Linda or anything other than John's decision broke up the Beatles.

His Life in the 1970s

John Lennon: One Day at a Time, Anthony Fawcett

Anthony Fawcett was born in 1948 in England and studied Fine Art at Oxford. He started writing as an art critic. He lives in New York and wrote this book in 1976. Fawcett worked full time with John and Yoko running their office, organizing their daily schedule, and cataloging their writings and films (`Introduction'). Lennon had a complex and varying character (pp.10-11).

`Part One - The Man' tells how his life when he met John Lennon. It tells about "The Acorn Event", a project called "art". [Do these "art projects" raise a question about judgment?] The "avant-garde set" sounds like a collection of wealthy wastrels (p.28). "Bizarre events" (p.29). "Lollypop Art" (p.38)? Was Lennon's arrest for drugs caused by planted evidence (p.39)? Did the "Two Virgins" album show mental problems (p.40)? "Demented freaks" (p.41)? "I was stoned all the time" (p.42). John was "dropping acid almost constantly" (p.43). Did the events in "The Peace Politician" have any effect?

There were big problems in mismanagement at Apple (p.81). These money problems led to the end of the Beatles (p.89). "The Dream Is Over" tells about John's feelings. The Lennon's moved to New York in 1971 and lived in the West Village (p.119). But President Nixon personally ordered him kicked out of America (p.124). In 1976 John became a permanent resident of the US (p.149).

`Part Two - The Magic' tells about John as a musician, poet, and painter. The author is a fan of John Lennon. Others will not find it worth their time to read this book. It presents John as a deeply troubled individual, probably due to his use of drugs. Whiskey did the same job on other singers. In December 1980 a national monthly magazine printed an interview with John Lennon. They quoted him as going around Manhattan without a bodyguard. One reader knew this would make him an unprotected target, and acted on this news. Sic transit gloria mundi.

This book was the worst purchase I've ever made! It was all to pieces and couldn't even read it! The binding was rotted and the pages fell out! Very disappointed!!!

Review of DANCING WITH FEAR by Leila Peltosaari

This book is a major contribution to the literature on cancer, not only because it provides exhaustive and accurate information and survivor testimonials but also because it employs an artistic structure that lets anyone into the "dance" and shares with the public the "steps" that accompany it. This integration of content and structure brings us into the world of breast cancer survivors like no other book I have read, either popular or academic. One feels as if one is living the experiences with these women who speak so eloquently.

Ms. Peltosaari chooses to dance (act creatively) with often unspoken fears and thus has created an exceptional work of art as well as a superb resource for all cancer patients.

In my 25 years as music therapist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, I have not come across a work on cancer that integrates clinical information, patient testimonial and literary art as well as Dancing with Fear. I highly recommend this book to all the people I see in my work and commend Ms. Peltosaari for her wonderful work.

If you buy 2 books for Breast Cancer, Make one this one!

I checked this book out of the library and now I am buying it, along with Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book. I also like the Mayo Clinics Guide to Women's Cancers. I was diagnosed a month ago, am recovering from a mastectomy, have Stage 3C cancer, and will be starting chemo and radiation. I love this book because it's written in plain english, it deals with the practical and the emotional, and it presents many sides of the issue. Every woman's cancer and treatment is different, and this book gives you an idea of the spectrum of what to expect every step of the way. It's also an easy book to flip through -- I plan to bring it to chemo, and I am copying my favorite bits of advice and quotations into a small journal. I hope to contribute to the sequel.

It is filled with wonderful quotations and proverbs (not about breast cancer, but about life, healing, fear, etc.)

This may sound silly, but I also like the size of the book, the title, and the cover art.

I've checked some 20 books out of the library, and this is one my favorites.

Real advice about breast cancer from real people

I am a three-year breast cancer survivor and have read many, many books on the subject, but "Dancing With Fear" was one of the most personal. By the time I finished reading it, I was thinking of the women quoted as friends of mine! They seemed so real, because they ARE real, and that made the book one of my favorites!

About the Author
Julie Stav, a financial planner and broker, was born in Cuba and came to the United States as a teenager. A former teacher, she is the founder/owner of Retirement Benefit Systems, a financial planning firm in California, and also runs a network of investment clubs whose members now number in the tens of thousands. Known for her speaking engagements and investment guide videotapes, she has been profiled in the Los Angeles Times and other papers, has appeared on Lifetime’s “New Attitudes” and ABC Eyewitness News, and has appeared numerous times on ABC’s “The View.” She is also the author of Get Your Share. Get Your Share and Fund Your Future have been developed into television series on personal finance, and are currently airing on PBS.

Very satisfied with this book

Unlike other books, I see the hand of a teacher here, starting from the beginning and guiding you through it, all the while encouraging you and making the book readable, light and even pleasant on the very serious subject of the stock market. This is my personal opinion.

About the Author
Vickie Bentley-Williamson is a senior lecturer at Texas A&M University. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemical Education from the University of Oklahoma. Bentley-Williamson has earned numerous teaching awards, including the College of Science Teaching award in 2003. In addition to undergraduate general chemistry courses and labs, she teaches graduate-level chemical education courses. Bentley-Williamson has served as a Chemical Education Research Feature Editor for the JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION since 2002, and has been elected to the national ACS, Division of Chemical Education Research Committee for two consecutive terms (2000-2005).

M. Larry Peck, Professor Emeritus at Texas A & M University, received his Ph.D. from Montana State University in 1971. He won the Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award in 2000, Texas A & M's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002, and the Division of Chemical Education's Outstanding Service to the Division Award in 2007. Until his retirement in 2006, Dr. Peck taught science at all levels and directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs.

Kate was dead now and Gareth and Alida run into each other once again.

Now Alida wants to hurt Gareth back for the pain that she felt he inflicted on her those five years ago. Alida had fallen for him and she is still nursing some hate towards him. Gareth seemed to believe that since she was in the fashion world that she had loose morals, but he was wrong.

They seem set up to have a one night or perhaps a three night four day fling, but Alida backs out at the last minute. She realizes she can't do it because she still loves Gareth, but he doesn't love her. Alida wants more than he is willing to give. She doesn't want Gareth to keep his life, i.e. daughter, separate from any possible relationship that they might have . . . she doesn't want to be just a fling. Gareth eventually gives in and introduces Alida to Stacey, his 12-13 year old daughter with Kate. That whole scene was very entertaining. Stacey is very rude and a bit bratty to Alida. Stacey even says, "She doesn't even fit into our lives. Go to bed with her if you have to, but why should you want me to meet her?" To which Alida wants out of the car and says that Stacey is just like her mother, Kate. Of course Stacey doesn't know about the history between Alida and Gareth. Alida said that Kate didn't mind Gareth treating her like a . . . and neither does his daughter. As long as she is kept separate from their lives. She was tired of being treated like that. The argument goes on further, and yes Stacey is right there during that whole thing. Gareth treated Alida like he was a hitchhiker to her highway and what was one more rider on the fast lane. It escalates further. Until she says, "I have a child, Gareth. . . . son that you fathered on me. But you don't know about him, do you? You didn't care enough to protect me from consequences." After that bombshell they are involved in a minor traffic accident and Alida uses that as her opportunity to escape.

She returns home to her parent's house that is a long drive away and where her son is. Gareth and of course Stacey follow. They even manage to beat Alida there.

There are very strong emotions involved with these two and it is made a little more difficult because of the children, but they manage. They have to come to learn to depend upon one another and trust each other's hearts with the other. But they all manage and they do get their HEA.

Great For Emma Darcy Fans

This is a good book from the husband & wife who are Emma Darcy. A widower meets by chance a woman whom he had an affair with during his late wife's terminal illness. She actually sanctioned him to have a sexual relationship since she couldn't. Call me nuts, but I would NEVER do that! Anyway, the woman was a fashion designer who was doing a photo shoot on his Outback station. Five years pass & his daughter sees the woman's picture in the newspaper & her father is stunned when he hears the name. He attends an awards party for Australian Designer of the Year9the woman wins top prize) & he approaches her with renewing their affair. Things don't go as he planned. He doesn't know he has an illegitimate 4 year old son. His daughter is decidedly hostile when Dad introduces them. Things start to happen fairly quickly after that. If you are an Emma Darcy fan, this book is for you.

One of my top re read hands down!! Wished it came on kindle then I would always have my old friend with me. One of Miss Darcy's oldie but so good!! There's angst and chemistry between H and h. H is a tough rich of course and very sexy. He was married when he met h who is an up and coming top designer in Australia. H wife has suffered from MS for long long time and so there was no sex but H was devoted to his wife and stayed true to her even though his wife told him to find someone to relieve that part since she can't do it anymore. h had a designer show near his homestead and the attraction was combustible which both got burned in the end. Him from guilt and h from the consequences of the affair. They met up later by this time H wife has passed away from her illness and therein the author spun her story with she's famous for. Love Love these oldies from Ms Darcy. Tissues needed.
