Review of DANCING WITH FEAR by Leila Peltosaari

This book is a major contribution to the literature on cancer, not only because it provides exhaustive and accurate information and survivor testimonials but also because it employs an artistic structure that lets anyone into the "dance" and shares with the public the "steps" that accompany it. This integration of content and structure brings us into the world of breast cancer survivors like no other book I have read, either popular or academic. One feels as if one is living the experiences with these women who speak so eloquently.

Ms. Peltosaari chooses to dance (act creatively) with often unspoken fears and thus has created an exceptional work of art as well as a superb resource for all cancer patients.

In my 25 years as music therapist at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, I have not come across a work on cancer that integrates clinical information, patient testimonial and literary art as well as Dancing with Fear. I highly recommend this book to all the people I see in my work and commend Ms. Peltosaari for her wonderful work.

If you buy 2 books for Breast Cancer, Make one this one!

I checked this book out of the library and now I am buying it, along with Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book. I also like the Mayo Clinics Guide to Women's Cancers. I was diagnosed a month ago, am recovering from a mastectomy, have Stage 3C cancer, and will be starting chemo and radiation. I love this book because it's written in plain english, it deals with the practical and the emotional, and it presents many sides of the issue. Every woman's cancer and treatment is different, and this book gives you an idea of the spectrum of what to expect every step of the way. It's also an easy book to flip through -- I plan to bring it to chemo, and I am copying my favorite bits of advice and quotations into a small journal. I hope to contribute to the sequel.

It is filled with wonderful quotations and proverbs (not about breast cancer, but about life, healing, fear, etc.)

This may sound silly, but I also like the size of the book, the title, and the cover art.

I've checked some 20 books out of the library, and this is one my favorites.

Real advice about breast cancer from real people

I am a three-year breast cancer survivor and have read many, many books on the subject, but "Dancing With Fear" was one of the most personal. By the time I finished reading it, I was thinking of the women quoted as friends of mine! They seemed so real, because they ARE real, and that made the book one of my favorites!

About the Author
Julie Stav, a financial planner and broker, was born in Cuba and came to the United States as a teenager. A former teacher, she is the founder/owner of Retirement Benefit Systems, a financial planning firm in California, and also runs a network of investment clubs whose members now number in the tens of thousands. Known for her speaking engagements and investment guide videotapes, she has been profiled in the Los Angeles Times and other papers, has appeared on Lifetime’s “New Attitudes” and ABC Eyewitness News, and has appeared numerous times on ABC’s “The View.” She is also the author of Get Your Share. Get Your Share and Fund Your Future have been developed into television series on personal finance, and are currently airing on PBS.

Very satisfied with this book

Unlike other books, I see the hand of a teacher here, starting from the beginning and guiding you through it, all the while encouraging you and making the book readable, light and even pleasant on the very serious subject of the stock market. This is my personal opinion.

About the Author
Vickie Bentley-Williamson is a senior lecturer at Texas A&M University. She earned her Ph.D. in Chemical Education from the University of Oklahoma. Bentley-Williamson has earned numerous teaching awards, including the College of Science Teaching award in 2003. In addition to undergraduate general chemistry courses and labs, she teaches graduate-level chemical education courses. Bentley-Williamson has served as a Chemical Education Research Feature Editor for the JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION since 2002, and has been elected to the national ACS, Division of Chemical Education Research Committee for two consecutive terms (2000-2005).

M. Larry Peck, Professor Emeritus at Texas A & M University, received his Ph.D. from Montana State University in 1971. He won the Chemical Manufacturers Association Catalyst Award in 2000, Texas A & M's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002, and the Division of Chemical Education's Outstanding Service to the Division Award in 2007. Until his retirement in 2006, Dr. Peck taught science at all levels and directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs.

Australian Designer of the Year! Alida Rose should have felt elated with the recognition. She'd worked hard to achieve such success - it was her future. Gareth Morgan was her past. And yet five years had not diminished the impact of the charismatic man nor the painful memories. A renewed relationship with Gareth was tempting. But this time Alida vowed she'd show this outback man - she'd be as ruthless with him as he'd been with her.

Five years before the book took place Alida and Gareth had a fling. Gareth had a wife, Kare, who was very ill. Gareth had loved Kate very much. But Kate had developed MS and she told Gareth that he could seek his sex elsewhere and it wouldn't bother her. Gareth didn't until he laid eyes on Alida. He had wanted her. Kate was dead now and Gareth and Alida run into each other once again.

Gareth wants Alida again. He may have not planned to run into her but he wasn't bothered by using the opportunity to his benefit either. When they had originally been together Alida didn't know about Kate. She was away seeking treatment in a hospital. Now Alida wants to hurt Gareth back for the pain that she felt he inflicted on her those five years ago. Alida had fallen for him and she is still nursing some hate towards him. Gareth seemed to believe that since she was in the fashion world that she had loose morals, but he was wrong.

They seem set up to have a one night or perhaps a three night four day fling, but Alida backs out at the last minute. She realizes she can't do it because she still loves Gareth, but he doesn't love her. Alida wants more than he is willing to give. She doesn't want Gareth to keep his life, i.e. daughter, separate from any possible relationship that they might have . . . she doesn't want to be just a fling. Gareth eventually gives in and introduces Alida to Stacey, his 12-13 year old daughter with Kate. That whole scene was very entertaining. Stacey is very rude and a bit bratty to Alida. Stacey even says, "She doesn't even fit into our lives. Go to bed with her if you have to, but why should you want me to meet her?" To which Alida wants out of the car and says that Stacey is just like her mother, Kate. Of course Stacey doesn't know about the history between Alida and Gareth. Alida said that Kate didn't mind Gareth treating her like a . . . and neither does his daughter. As long as she is kept separate from their lives. She was tired of being treated like that. The argument goes on further, and yes Stacey is right there during that whole thing. Gareth treated Alida like he was a hitchhiker to her highway and what was one more rider on the fast lane. It escalates further. Until she says, "I have a child, Gareth. . . . son that you fathered on me. But you don't know about him, do you? You didn't care enough to protect me from consequences." After that bombshell they are involved in a minor traffic accident and Alida uses that as her opportunity to escape.

She returns home to her parent's house that is a long drive away and where her son is. Gareth and of course Stacey follow. They even manage to beat Alida there.

There are very strong emotions involved with these two and it is made a little more difficult because of the children, but they manage. They have to come to learn to depend upon one another and trust each other's hearts with the other. But they all manage and they do get their HEA.

Great For Emma Darcy Fans

This is a good book from the husband & wife who are Emma Darcy. A widower meets by chance a woman whom he had an affair with during his late wife's terminal illness. She actually sanctioned him to have a sexual relationship since she couldn't. Call me nuts, but I would NEVER do that! Anyway, the woman was a fashion designer who was doing a photo shoot on his Outback station. Five years pass & his daughter sees the woman's picture in the newspaper & her father is stunned when he hears the name. He attends an awards party for Australian Designer of the Year9the woman wins top prize) & he approaches her with renewing their affair. Things don't go as he planned. He doesn't know he has an illegitimate 4 year old son. His daughter is decidedly hostile when Dad introduces them. Things start to happen fairly quickly after that. If you are an Emma Darcy fan, this book is for you.

One of my top re read hands down!! Wished it came on kindle then I would always have my old friend with me. One of Miss Darcy's oldie but so good!! There's angst and chemistry between H and h. H is a tough rich of course and very sexy. He was married when he met h who is an up and coming top designer in Australia. H wife has suffered from MS for long long time and so there was no sex but H was devoted to his wife and stayed true to her even though his wife told him to find someone to relieve that part since she can't do it anymore. h had a designer show near his homestead and the attraction was combustible which both got burned in the end. Him from guilt and h from the consequences of the affair. They met up later by this time H wife has passed away from her illness and therein the author spun her story with she's famous for. Love Love these oldies from Ms Darcy. Tissues needed.

Leaves the serious Mansfield fan still wanting to know more!

Martha Saxton does a fairly good job for a simple basic chronological biography on Jayne. Saxton sticks to the point in the picture she has painted of Jayne. From Jayne's simple basic middle class upbringing to her zealous tinsel-town lifestyle once star struck in Hollywood. Many details of Jayne's personality and behavior I feel were left out or just indeed forgotten. My only argument is the argument many have had on the real fact whether Mansfield was really literally decapitated. Terrible rumors have flown around over the years that her head even ended up in the backseat of the car! The book said she was decapitated, however I have actually seen the death picture and the head was still attached from what I could tell. The ending of the book provided rather interesting information though about the settlement of the estate. Many of the more serious fans or collectors though may still be left somewhat hungry after reading this book. However I would still recommend reading it for those wanting to know whatever they can possibly find out about Mansfield as she was indeed a true Hollywood legend.

The author illuminates the tail end of Hollywood's golden age, and how a brunette girl from Texas became a Hollywood blonde bombshell and star! Martha Saxton points out that unlike Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield could speak three languages and showed real acting talent!

Feminism and Jayne

You would not ordinarily expect Jayne Mansfield to be held up as a feminist model, but that's what Martha Saxton does in this unusual book.

Martha takes the view that Jayne was a cluster of paradoxes - very intelligent yet "played dumb," very down-to-earth yet adaptive to an extreme degree of glamour, very ambitious yet reticent in a strange way.

I learned a lot about who we were in the American 50s because of this book, and enjoyed the ride - except for the very end of Jayne's life in the tragic auto accident.

In this volume, Puleo, a contributor to American History magazine, sets out to determine whether the collapse of a molasses tank that sent a tidal wave of 2.3 million gallons of the sticky liquid through Boston's North End and killed 21 people was the work of Italian anarchists or due to negligence by the tank's owner, United States Industrial Alcohol. Getting into the minds of the major players in the disaster-USIA suits, victims, witnesses, North End residents, politicians-he re-creates not only the scene but also the social, political and economic environments of the time that made the disaster more than just an industrial accident. While the collapse's aftermath is tragic, the story itself is not exactly gripping. More interesting are the tidbits of Boston's and America's history, such as the importance of molasses to all U.S. war efforts up to and including WWI, which Puleo uses to put the tank collapse in the context of a very complex time in U.S. history. The most striking aspect of this tale is the timeliness of the topics it touches on. Describing Americans being persecuted because of their ethnicity, a sagging economy boosted by war, and terrorism on U.S. soil that results in anti-immigration laws and deportations, Puleo could just as easily be writing about current events as about events in 1919. Overall, this is another piece in the jigsaw puzzle that is Boston's long and rich history. Photos.

In January, 1919, a fifty-foot tank filled with molasses exploded, sending waves of viscous goo through waterfront Boston and killing twenty-one people. Were Italian anarchists to blame or was it negligence by the tank's owner, the United States Industrial Alcohol company? Such matters form the crux of Puleo's account, which is narrated with gusto (and sometimes too much gusto: one victim has molasses "clinging to his private parts, like an army of insects that just keep coming"). Molasses was a vital commodity at the time, used in rum manufacture (the tank was full to the brim to cash in on pre-Prohibition demand), and it had been important in the production of First World War munitions. Puleo overreaches in claiming the story of the flood as a "microcosm of America"—an almost obligatory conclusion in this sort of history—but his enthusiasm for a little-known catastrophe is infectious.

Dark Tide by Stephen Puleo details the molasses flood that devastated the Commercial Street area in Boston on January 15, 1919. A fifty-foot tall steel tank owned by United States Industrial Alcohol Company (USIA) collapsed and unleashed 2.3 million gallons of molasses on the congested waterfront district in a fifteen-foot-high wave moving as fast as thirty-five miles per hour. Incredible structural damage resulted as well as over one hundred injuries and a score of deaths. I had never heard of this tragedy until I ran across this book as an Amazon.com recommendation. It seems odd to me that this event is not more widely known due to its unusual nature. Puleo explains that it was considered an "isolated event not connected with larger trends in American history" (x). The author sets out to make these connections throughout his book. The story of January 15, 1919 and its aftermath is interwoven with the most important headlines of the day.

Puleo expertly connects the molasses flood to the Great War (the USIA was distilling molasses for industrial alcohol used in munitions production), anarchism and the Red Scare (the tank was built in a southern Italian district), Prohibition, and the pro-Big Business administrations of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. The author also demonstrates, mostly through the deposition of the USIA assistant treasurer responsible for the tank's construction, the unbelievably rushed and careless manner in which the tank was built. It leaked profusely from the outset. Workers near the tank, even the children in the community, noticed the leaks but the company responded only by occasionally re-caulking the plates and rivets and painting the tank molasses color to make the leaks less noticeable.

A moving account of the human suffering resulting from the bursting tank follows as well as a detailed look at the long trial and the verdicts and damages awarded. The author shows a lot of respect for Judge Ogden and, unfortunately, gives away the verdict in a caption under his photo before the section on the trial. The defense's argument was that the tank was exploded by anarchists (the trial coincided with incidents of anarchist violence as well as the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti). Puleo ends with the direct short-term and long-term effects of the Boston molasses flood. His view that the verdict marked a change in America's attitude towards Big Business; a trend that led to the election of Franklin Roosevelt, seemed a stretch, but the other more local ramifications were important and makes one wonder further why this tragedy is not more well-known. A list of the deceased, biographical essay, and index are included as well as a few photos (mostly taken on the scene of the flood's destructive wake).

My biggest criticism is that Puleo often describes what is going on in the minds of the people involved which, for a historical book, is always a dicey thing to do. He does not follow-up on Isaac Gonzales. He is introduced right at the beginning as the "general man" of the Boston tank that was haunted by fear that the leaking tank would explode. He finally had to leave his job and move to Ohio. He apparently gave testimony at the trial, but Puleo offers no excerpts from it, nor is there any word on Gonzales' reaction when finding out his greatest fear became reality. Gonzales was not listed among those on which Puleo followed-up (no fault of the author's if no information was available) but it would have been nice to read a post-flood statement from Gonzales and have the book go full circle. Despite these minor complaints, Dark Tide is a clearly written, thorough account of a little known tragedy that has more connection to the historical fabric of the country than a lot of tragedies that have gone on into legend.

Awesome - a pleasant surprise!

This book was easy to read and very, very compelling. Until I picked this book up, I'd never heard of the Great Boston Molasses Flood, which is odd, because it's one of the most eerie and fascinating disasters to occur in the 20th Century. Even though you know what's going to happen with the molasses tank, the suspense is dreadful and nightmarish. The author did a wonderful job in bringing all of the strange events and principal characters to vivid life and treating the tragedy with pathos and respect. A nail-biter! Would make a great movie!

A compelling history and so much more

As a Massachusetts native, I was naturally drawn to this book, having heard vague references over the years to "spilled" molasses in Boston, but not many factual details about this bizarre disaster. But Dark Tide is a story - and I emphasize the word story - that offers so much more. If you're looking for a dry history lesson, look elsewhere. Like any great story, it brings its characters to life. About the Author
David MacLaughlin is retired from the Chippewa Valley Technical College (25 years) as head of the construction engineering department.

Dr. Hector Estrada is currently professor and chair of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of the Pacific. He has published on structural engineering and engineering education in various peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and presented research work at various technical conferences. He has served as reviewer for a number of journals (including the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering and ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics), conferences, book publishers, and funding agencies. His past and current service includes membership in several national ASCE and ASME committees.

I have been a Steel Detailer for 14 years. I found the book interesting and well thought out. The book is split into two sections. The first is for the Structural Design shop and the second for the Detailing shop.
What the author covers, he covers in a thorough manner. I would like to have seen a section on horizontal and vertical bracing, which was not even mentioned in the book.
Many of the authors example detail drawings left out some information which the shop might find helpful. For instance, stantard hole size for the drawing or the distance from the end of a clip angle to the end of the cut member. The author states that because there is an "industry standard" that this information does not have to be shown. He explains that 13/16 holes are the standard size, and so no notation is required on a drawing if 13/16 holes are used. It has been my experience that this information may be "industry standard," but the shops I have draw for all require it on the detail drawings.
Trying to use this book to train a new detailer is a challenge. The drafting standard used to create the examples in the detailing section may be "industry standard," but it does not quite meet my standard. It is an OK book, but not perfect.

This is a well thought out, carefully organized and well documented introduction to structural steel drafting. I am in a related industry and bought the book to further acquaint myself with the subject. I feel that I certainly got my money's worth, and congratulate the author on his conscientious and thoughtful presentation.

I got it for school and it was very informative and easy to read. The figures were clear and very well done, but there were so many of them on different pages from the page they were referenced from it was hard to really get anything out of them. The questions provided at the end of each chapter served as a good review.
