Soap and cosmetic recipes have been around for thousands of years. Before the discovery of synthetic scents and colors (ca 1890) and detergents (ca 1930's) nearly all the ingredients used to create soap, cosmetics and perfumes were "natural" (not necessarily SAFE, but certainly derived from natural sources). This book contains over 500 recipes for many different categories of soap and cosmetic products, including soap, creams and lotions, balms and salves, oils, bath fizzies and bombs, salts and soaks, powders, exfoliants and scrubs, clays and masks, perfumes, and products for the hair, teeth and household. There is also a short chapter on the strange and bizarre (not recommended for actual use). The recipes were compiled from antique and vintage books and several websites, focusing on those that made using safe, natural ingredients (recipes containing arsenic, mercury, lead and other toxic materials were not included). The focus of the soap recipes are pre-1930 (before detergents) and a large percentage of the cosmetic recipes are pre-1900. Also included is an extensive glossary of the ingredients used in the recipes provided, along with possible alternative ingredients when the original is exhorbitantly expensive or generally unavailable. These recipes can be used as-is (although not all of them have been tested), or can be used as a starting point for developing unique natural soap and cosmetics formulations of your own.

About the Author
Marie Gale is a self-professed computer geek who actually likes reading laws, statutes, regulations, court cases and old books. She probably would have been a lawyer or a chemist has things worked out differently. As it is, in 1998 she started making and selling handcrafted soap and cosmetics. Her tendency toward research of all kinds, led her to delving into labeling regulations, resulting in her book "Soap and Cosmetic Labeling" (2008). Involvement with the community of soap and cosmetic handcrafters and seeing the need for good manufacturing practices, brought about her book "Good Manufacturing Practices for Handcrafters" (2012). Her love of old books became the driving force behind her extensive library of antique and vintage books about the making and use soap and cosmetics, particularly those products made with natural ingredients. Wanting to share at least some of the amazing recipes available in her library, Marie published "300 Years of Natural Soap & Cosmetic Recipes" (2011). Marie lives in Southwestern Oregon with the man of her life. When not participating in the handcrafted soap and cosmetic community, she can be found doing website programming, managing her family's timber ranch or researching her family tree.

I love this book

I love this book. A lot of Pathology information on pretty much everything you'll see in the clinical setting. There is a lot of relevant info in the implications sections that can help you with your thought processes if you encounter more complex pathologies. It also follows the Guide to PT Practice, which is what all the questions on the board exam and clinical specialty exams are based on. I did dock one star due to it not listing or making small references to some tests or measures used for some cardiopulmonary and neuro pathologies, and also having some heavy repetition in some topics. Overall this is quite a hefty book and is the thickest book on my bookshelf, but it is very useful and has enough info to understand at a professional level mostly any complex patient pathology you may see in any setting.

The overall aim of the present paper was to examine how environmental micro-variation in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve of Belize can influence species distribution and thereby inform management strategy. The paper deals first with the background to forest management in Belize, then considers the methodology used in the present study and fin~~ly assesses the preliminary results. The specific objectives are: (1) to assess the effects of changing scale on the variability of selected individual soil properties in forest plots within the same vegetation class; and (2) to examine the variation in soil properties and tree species distribution, and to integrate environmental and ecological data over a range of scales. BACKGROUND Whereas the global and regional distribution of tropical forests is broadly governed by climatic and altitudinal variation, individual forest tracts need to consider a range of other, locally important factors to explain species distribution and change. With very high species diversity, tropical forests present a major challenge in the attempt to unravel controlling factors in distribution and growth (Swaine et aI. 1987). Research that attempts to explain diversity has looked at species distribution according to a range of factors, with a general recognition that soil fertility plays a significant if ill­ defined role (Swaine 1996).

A Rude History of Napoleonic Era Europe

It's hard to imagine a popular publisher commission a twelve part history of Europe from the Reformation to World War 2 for the general reader these days, but in the 1960s that is what Fontana publishing did with their history of Europe. George Rude's contribution covers the period from 1783-1815 under the title "Revolutionary Europe" and in a readable prose explicates for the general reader the history of Europe during the turmoil and upheavals of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era.

The period itself is broken down into four parts, firstly the scene is set with an account of Europe in the early 1780's that considers the state of European developments at that time and the conflicts within as well as between Nations. The largest section of the book covers the French revolution itself and the variety of twists and turns it took prior to the rise of Napoleon. This is followed by an account of the myriad of effects that the revolutionary ideology had across Europe, and the Wars that were fought across the continent. Part of the revolutionary ideology was the recognition of talent without regard to status, so in effect you didn't have to be a member of the nobility/aristocracy to rise high in the service of the State. One such talented individual was Napoleon, and the fourth part of the book looks at his rise to power in the army, in France and across Europe as well as his eventual fall, resurrection and eventual exile to St Helena a sort of early 19th Century Guantanemo Bay for one.

Rude is pretty even handed throughout, and though he freely gives his opinion he also allows room for other views of the events of those decades. It's a good few years old, initially published in 1962, but stands up well against other books I have read on this period. There is a newer edition from Blackwell as well as this older Fontana edition but I have no idea whether it is the same text with a new introduction, or whether the body of the text has been updated to take into account new research and interpretations of the era. As the new edition was published 7 years after the death of Rude I suspect the former. Besides that the original paperback can be picked up cheaply second hand here while the Blackwell edition is somewhat more pricey. Recommended reading.

A Forty-Four Pound Airborne History of Revolutionary Europe

A forty-four pound cat was once lost & then found wandering around in the woods of New Jersey. "Chunk" became both an instant tabloid celebrity & a timely inspiration to this writer, previously at a loss as to how to create a metaphorical image of Mr. Rude's endless sentences & paragraphs.

A four-word sentence on page 264 provided some relief.

Only by being incarcerated for 12 hours during two continental flights to & from California was it possible to be able to get past the first 200 pages of this suitable-for-wallpaper tripe. In the home stretch, Chapters XI ("Revolutionary War") on out to the finale ("Perspectives") were relatively succinct & a welcome improvement. But how many readers in the past 45 years gave up before ever reading them?

Two or three more of these & I might be reading novels again.

Retained for its useful glossary of French & English words & terms & slogans of the Revolutionary & Napoleonic France era; its conscientious & systematic inclusion of historical dates; & for its extensive bibliography... which could have been printed in a normal size type - rendering them clearly legible - if Rude's academic bombfog (i.e., "as we have seen in previous chapters"**) - had been eliminated by an able editor intent upon producing a readable history.

Two-&-a-half stars for the reasons that it was retained & a half-star was added out of respect for Dr. John Kreis, who spoke respectfully of the book as a source reliable enough to be used to resolve a question about the function of the French parlement prior to the guillotine emerging as the final word in French legal circles during the revolution.

*There is an accent - either acute or grave - over the "e" in the author's last name. Given his verbosity, the letter should be engraved with both.

**If you have to interrupt the narrative with academic yammering in order to remind readers of what you stated in previous chapters, you're obviously not making a good first impression.
