From School Library Journal
Grades 4-7--The St. Charles Players perform this readers' theatre-style rendition of H.G. Wells' classic story. Using appropriate sound effects and alternating readers allows listeners to differentiate between characters and to develop a sense of place and time. The lively narration will hold listeners' attention from beginning to end. The story begins with a revolutionary Victorian scientist who claims to have invented a machine that allows him to travel through time. Using flashbacks, he recounts his adventures in the futurist world he visits in his time machine to a group of skeptical friends. This abridged version will work well as an introduction to classic literature in elementary grade classes, but omits too much of the original text for older students. Consider adding this title to audiobook collections that focus on classic, time-tested literature.

Review
"Kudos to Campfire for such a fun effort with such a fun story. With [48] other titles hitting the market over the next two years, distribution through Random House, and brilliant art in each based on the previews I've seen, I expect Campfire to become a major player in the graphic novel market."

— Bucky Carter, EN/SANE World

"I highly recommend Campfire’s comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in  a way that excites kids about classic literature."

— Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

From the Publisher
The Time Traveller steps into his machine and emerges in the year 802,700 a utopian age of peace and harmony. That is, until the ruckus of the theft of his machine changes all that. Ben Kingsley, the reader, is known for his many roles onscreen, including Ghandi.

One of the greatest books I've ever read--get this edition!
By Polymath
When I tried reading this book as a child many, many years ago, some of the "big" words and allusions made it hard going, and I never completed it then. Finally, about fifteen years ago I did read it through, but still was missing something. Then, a few weeks ago, I got this edition, after having enjoyed the Penguin edition of "The War of the Worlds" with its annotations and map. Well, the annotations in this edition (about four pages worth as endnotes) of "The Time Machine" cleared away whatever fuzz remained, and I was completely overcome by the greatness of the book, great from whatever way I looked at it: plot, speculation, characters, "sense of wonder", even throw away humor were all topnotch. I couldn't believe what I'd been missing. A few days later, I read another editon of the book that didn't have notes, and had no trouble following that version. I plan to reread the book again shortly. So if you've had difficulty reading "The Time Machine" for some of the reasons mentioned above, get this version pronto and find out what a true classic is.

A Timeless Classic
By Daniel Jolley
It goes without saying that this book is a science fiction classic in every sense of the word and that H.G. Wells was a founding father of the genre. This book proves that science fiction does not necessarily need to be heavily technical but does need to deal with grand themes such as the nature of society; man's hopes, dreams, and fears; and the very humanity of man. Wells does not go to great lengths in describing the time machine nor how it works. He lays the foundation of the story in science and then proceeds with his somewhat moralistic and certainly socially conscious story. This makes his writing much more enjoyable than that of a Jules Verne, who liked to fill up pages with scientific and highly technical nomenclature. One of the more striking aspects of the novel is Wells' treatment of the actual experience of time travel--moving in time is not like opening and walking through a door. There are physical and emotional aspects of the time travel process--in fact, some of the most descriptive passages in the book are those describing what the Time Traveler experiences and sees during his time shifts.
Basically, Wells is posing the question of What will man be like in the distant future? His answer is quite unlike any kind of scenario that modern readers, schooled on Star Wars, Star Trek, and the like, would come up with. He gives birth to a simple and tragic society made up of the Eloi and the Morlocks. In contrasting these two groups, he offers a critique of sorts of men in his own time. Clearly, he is worried about the gap between the rich and the poor widening in his own world and is warning his readers of the dangers posed by such a growing rift. It is most interesting to see how the Time Traveler's views of the future change over the course of his stay there. At first, he basically thinks that the Morlocks, stuck underground, have been forced to do all the work of man while the Eloi on the surface play and dance around in perpetual leisure. Later, he realizes that the truth is more complicated than that. The whole book seems to be a warning against scientific omniscience and communal living. The future human society that the Time Traveler finds is supposedly ideal--free of disease, wars, discrimination, intensive labor, poverty, etc. However, the great works of man have been lost--architectural, scientific, philosophical, literary, etc.--and human beings have basically become children, each one dressing, looking, and acting the same. The time traveler opines that the loss of conflict and change that came in the wake of society's elimination of health, political, and social issues served to stagnate mankind. Without conflict, there is no achievement, and mankind atrophies both mentally and physically.
This basic message of the novel is more than applicable today. While it is paramount that we continue to research and discover new scientific facts about ourselves and the world, we must not come to view science as a religion that can ultimately recreate the earth as an immense garden of Eden. Knowledge itself is far less important than the healthy pursuit of that knowledge. Man's greatness lies in his ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. Speaking only for myself, I think this novel points out the dangerousness of Communism and points to the importance of individualism--if you engineer a society in which every person is "the same" and "equal," then you have doomed that society.

Past and present masterpiece
By Philip Challinor
This is the little number that started it all. For the English-speaking world (some translations of Verne possibly aside), science fiction begins with the four brief, brilliant novels published by H G Wells in the 1890s. The War of the Worlds is a still-unsurpassed alien invasion story; The Invisible Man one of the first world-dominating mad scientist tales; and The Island of Dr Moreau a splendidly misanthropic story of artificial evolution and genetic modification. But The Time Machine came first, launching Wells' career in literature; and, after just over a century, there still isn't anything nearly like it. A Victorian inventor travels to the year 802701, where the class divisions of Wells' day have evolved two distinct human races: the helpless, childlike and luxurious Eloi and the monstrous, mechanically adept and subterranean Morlocks. Predictably, the film version turned them into the usual Good Guys and Bad Guys, though it's still worth seeing, particularly for its conception of the Time Machine itself - a splendid piece of Victorian gadgetry. The book, despite its sociological-satirical premise, is rather more complex in its treatment of the opposed races, and the Time Traveller's voyage ends, not with them, but still further in the future, with images of a dead sun and a dark earth populated only by scuttling, indefinite shadows. As in the other three novels, too, the premise of the story is carefully worked out and clearly explained - a discipline largely beyond science fiction today, in which time travel, invading aliens or whatever are simply taken for granted as convenient genre props and automatic thought-nullifiers. After more than a century, The Time Machine is still waiting for the rest of us to catch up.

An Invincible Beast: Understanding the Hellenistic Pike Phalanx in Action, by Christopher Matthew

The Hellenistic pike-phalanx was a true military innovation, transforming the face of warfare in the ancient world. For nearly 200 years, from the rise of the Macedonians as a military power in the mid-fourth century BC, to their defeat at the hands of the Romans at Pydna in 168BC, the pike-wielding heavy infantryman (the phalangite) formed the basis of nearly every Hellenistic army to deploy on battlefields stretching from Italy to India. And yet, despite this dominance, and the vast literature dedicated to detailing the history of the Hellenistic world, there remains fierce debate among modern scholars about how infantry combat in this age was actually conducted.

Christopher Matthews critically examines phalanx combat by using techniques such as physical re-creation, experimental archaeology, and ballistics testing, and then comparing the findings of this testing to the ancient literary, artistic and archaeological evidence, as well as modern theories. The result is the most comprehensive and up-to-date study of what heavy infantry combat was like in the age of Alexander the Great and his Successors.

High Recommended for Those Interested Hellenistic Tactics and Drill
By Falcon6
If you are interested in the details of how the Hellenistic Pike-phalanx operated, this book is a rare prize. I ordered it directly from P&S and have been reading it over the last two months. After reading the book I now understand why early-modern pike drill and Hellenistic drill were significantly different. Highly recommended for those interested in Hellenistic tactics and drill

Leon Block makes Bach simple
By Philip Jones
Bach for guitar greatly simplified. Leon Block made many simple arrangements with the guitar picker in mind. Using a pick eliminates bass notes in many cases. Classical guitar's can probably figure out the bass. Most arrangements are very good. A few are kind of lame. This is a good choice if you are looking for Bach pieces you can work up quickly.

A transformative look at Los Angeles

This literary and cartographic exploration of Los Angeles reorients our understanding of the city in highly imaginative ways. Illuminated by boldly conceived and artfully rendered maps and infographics, nineteen essays by LA's most exciting writers reveal complex histories and perspectives of a place notorious for superficiality. This chorus of voices explores wildly different subjects: Cindi Alvitre unveils the indigenous Tongva presence of the Los Angeles Basin; Michael Jaime-Becerra takes us into the smoky, spicy kitchens of a family taquero business in El Monte; Steve Graves traces the cowboy-and-spacemen-themed landscapes of the San Fernando Valley. Overlooked sites and phenomena become apparent: LGBT churches and synagogues, a fabled ''Cycleway,'' mustachioed golden carp, urban forests, lost buildings, ugly buildings. What has been ignored, such as environmental and social injustice, is addressed with powerful anger and elegiac sadness, and what has been maligned is reexamined with a sense of pride: the city's freeways, for example, take the shape of a dove when viewed from midair and pulsate with wailing blues, surf rock, and brassy banda. Inspired by other texts that combine literature and landscape, including Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City, this book's juxtapositions make surprising connections and stir up undercurrents of truth. To all those who inhabit, love, or seek to understand Los Angeles, LAtitudes gives meaning and reward.

Review
“In consciously directing readers down a series of proverbial paths less taken, LAtitudes belies that laziest of stereotypes of Los Angeles as a homogenous, undifferentiated mass. As the book makes clear, the city is both palimpsest and jigsaw puzzle, all layers and fragments.” --Oliver Wang, Los Angeles Times

“Written by an eclectic group of wits and scholars, this colorful and beautifully designed volume can be read again and again.” --Jill Stewart, LA Weekly

“When I created my atlas of San Francisco, I was hoping that we were at the dawn of a new era of inventive, subversive, gorgeous mapping and social geographies. Let a thousand atlases bloom, I kept muttering, and I couldn't be more pleased that the first horse out of the gate first tiger lily in the flowerbed? is of the city of angels and overpasses and pastrami and tacos, of forgotten rivers, wars, refugees, voters, homesteaders, of dreams busy biting the dust and tribes miraculously reappearing. Cities are inexhaustible; they exist in countless versions, depending on who you ask and where you go and what you want; and an atlas like LAtitudes invites you to open up other people's versions and in so doing find your own.” --Rebecca Solnit, author of Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas and Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas

“Unique, fascinating, and totally fresh....Oh, yes, and LAtitudes has plenty of attitude. A must for anyone interested in Los Angeles history, culture, geography, or food.” --Lisa See, author of Shanghai Girls: A Novel

“Expresses the soul and spirit of Los Angeles.” --Glen Creason, Los Angeles Magazine

“Whole-heartedly embraces the Whitmanesque myth of Los Angeles: 'Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.'” --Jon Christensen, LA Observed

“As a geographer I'm always quick to describe LA as a failed city, an urban planning horror that has led to people like me who lived sixty miles from downtown to claim they re basically from LA. After reading LAtitudes, however, I returned to Los Angeles this year with a newfound respect for the hopeful attempts, negotiations, complications, and mistakes that have made the city what it is today: a composite urban behemoth of bewildering beauty. The only thing more enticing than the quality of the prose in this book is the depth of the ideas contained therein.” --Bradley L. Garrett, author of Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City

“A humane and beautifully written biography of the city that is also a lyrical exploration of its many layers...a source of inspiration and surprise for those of us who think we know LA as well those who have only imagined it from afar.” --Alastair Bonnett, author of Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies

“Here we have a volume that, through stories of LA's history, tells stories of our present and foretells our future. Based on insights from a diverse group of authors, LAtitudes reveals not only our geography but our complicated, dark, and hopeful soul for those that seek to understand our glorious city.” --Karen Mack, founder and executive director, LA Commons

“Offers the reader secrets that Google Maps is incapable of finding, navigation tips through the past, present, and future that Waze cannot fathom, and an understanding of Los Angeles that our trusted Thomas Guides could never reveal. What you hold in your hand is the new essential atlas for Los Angeles.” --Aaron Paley, cofounder, CARS and CicLAvia

“Through original and illustrative cartography, the stories of LA's past and present are told the way they should be dynamically with essays rich in historical content and distinct Angeleno experiences.” --Liza Posas, coordinator, LA as Subject

A Tour de Force Guide to America's City
By A. Lueder
I feel like I have waited for this book my whole life. For anyone who grew up in L.A., or lived in L.A., or for whatever reason loves L.A., this book is a heartfelt valentine to America's most fascinating metropolis. It delves into architecture, history, geography, agriculture, the environment, and the tangled racial relations of the indigenous Native Americans, the Californios, the Anglo settlers, and the Xican@s, each of which left lasting, if not always evident, imprints on the city and who continue to mold it today.

But LAtitudes is not all serious -- there are whimsical chapters on the history of L.A. radio, sure to inspire sweet nostalgia; there is a detailed map of non-chain Mexican restaurants; and there is even a quick rundown of the urban flora unique to the city.

LAtitudes has something to interest everyone and certainly anyone who has the pleasure of reading this delightful book will experience a number of "ah ha" moments and a deeper appreciation of the L.A. we have lived and loved.

Taking an Attitude: Los Angeles on the Square
By Joan Fry
I found this book delightful the first time I held it in my hands and ran a finger over the cover: portions of it, like the title, are raised. Inside, the illustrations are often unexpected and almost always add to the essays. I don't often go to the city of LA because I don't particularly like cities. But LA is a hard place to stay away from. If I'm not driving to the airport, I'm taking the train and enjoying Union Station. I've watched shows in the city, gone to museums, even met friends for lunch in Chinatown. As a non-native, I found some of the essays to be especially enjoyable because they stretched my mind or set fire to my imagination--or both. In particular: Teddy Varno's "The Bovine Metropolis," Luis J. Rodriguez's "How Xican@s Are the Makeweight of Los Angeles's Past, Present, and Future Perspectives," and Charles Hood's "Orphans, Dwarfs, Strangers, and Monsters," an essay (you wouldn't guess this from the title) about trees. Unfortunately the quality of the essays isn't uniform. A couple of them wouldn't have passed muster in a college composition class. In addition, Heyday, the publisher, needs a copy editor with a better eye. Plenty of typos, and somebody should have caught the fact that a "mountain lion" and a "cougar" are the same animal. But on the whole I recommend this book and plan to buy several copies for Christmas presents. Oh yeah--and I love the shifting meanings of the title!

One can easily get lost in the miles and miles of traffic-ridden ...
By AndreasG
In general. Having New York and various European cities as models in my head, it actually cost me some time wrap my head around that this was a very different type of city, and that it needs to be appreciated on its own terms. One can easily get lost in the miles and miles of traffic-ridden freeways, endless strip malls and empty sidewalks. Getting to appreciate what LA has to offer takes a real effort and it reveals itself slowly. Getting beyond cliches about “no there there” and “no history”, you can see that LA, and California in general, do not have a long history in terms of written documentation, but there most certainly is a unique, rich and diverse historical heritage that shaped the region into what it is.

This book compiles essays from writers with different backgrounds that address widely different topics that are beyond the cliched narratives of Junipero Serra’s missions, the Gold Rush, etc. Each essay is approximately 10 pages long and is, at least in part, based on a map showing a particular characteristic. Topics range from a description of the demographics, economy and ecology of pre-Columbian, colonial and Mexican greater LA basin, homesteading in the outer parts of what is now LA, descriptions of vegetation and the LA River, and descriptions of failed schemes and potential alternative histories they might have presented. Also included are essays that belie the idyllic stereotypical image sometimes presented, and show the struggles of various groups against the darker side of the city.

This book is a good complement to Mike Davis’s “City of Quartz”, which also presents an alternative history of Los Angeles.

The Ethics of Ambiguity, by Simone de Beauvoir

From the groundbreaking author of The Second Sex comes a radical argument for ethical responsibility and freedom.

In this classic introduction to existentialist thought, French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir’s The Ethics of Ambiguity simultaneously pays homage to and grapples with her French contemporaries, philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, by arguing that the freedoms in existentialism carry with them certain ethical responsibilities. De Beauvoir outlines a series of “ways of being” (the adventurer, the passionate person, the lover, the artist, and the intellectual), each of which overcomes the former’s deficiencies, and therefore can live up to the responsibilities of freedom. Ultimately, de Beauvoir argues that in order to achieve true freedom, one must battle against the choices and activities of those who suppress it.
The Ethics of Ambiguity is the book that launched Simone de Beauvoir’s feminist and existential philosophy. It remains a concise yet thorough examination of existence and what it means to be human.

About the Author
Simone de Beauvoir (1908–1986) was a French existentialist philosopher, intellectual, and social theorist best known for her writings on existentialist ethics and feminist existentialism, as well as for her infamous polyamorous relationship with fellow French existentialist Jean-Paul Sartre. World-renowned for her metaphysical novels She Came to Stay and The Mandarins, de Beauvoir also wrote a number of essays on philosophy, politics, and social issues. Her diverse writings go on to include biographies, as well as her four-volume autobiography, made up of Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter, The Prime of Life, Force of Circumstance, and All Said and Done. In addition to her philosophical writing, de Beauvoir was an ardent feminist, her most famous philosophical work being The Second Sex, which is consistently referenced in the study of feminism.

Great Teaching Text for Existentialism
By John Russon
This is an excellent and original work of philosophy, closely related to the contemporary ideas of Sartre and Merleau-Ponty, but quite unique and not reducible to their work. I find it to be one of the best books (indeed one of the few books) to use to teach existentialism in introductory classes. I recommend skipping the first chapter, because it is self-consciously "literary," (in an obscure way), and contributes nothing essential to the book. Chapter 2 is the core of the book, and it is an incredible and compelling piece of writing that brilliantly discusses the distinctive nature of childhood experience, and then develops a dialectic of "bad faith" that offers a sort of system for understanding personality types--ways, that is, of embracing (imperfectly) our freedom. The third chapter studies politics in a very thoughtful way, (though I find it is often lost on my intro students because they just don't have enough experience of political realities to appreciate the significance of what she is saying). This text is often wrongly belittled by commentators (and, indeed, de Beauvoir herself wrongly said disparaging things about it), but I think it is one of the classic texts of existential phenomenology and deserves to be widely read.

the Realm of Existentialism
By Katharena M. Eiermann
"There is no more obnoxious way to punish a man than to force him to perform acts which make no sense to him, as when one empties and fills the same ditch indefinitely, when one makes soldiers who are being punished march up and down, when one forces a schoolboy to copy lines."

What will the modern man do when slapped in the face with the absurdity of his own existence? Become an adventurer, passionate, serious, intellectual? Where will his values come from when there are no values -- how will he create them out of nothing? Is it easier to adopt a game full of illusions created by someone else? de Beauvoir forces the reader to come face to face with the absolute absurdity of the human condition, and then, proceeds to develop a dialectic of ambiguity that will enable the reader not to master the chaos, but to create with it. This book will probably alter many well-rooted philosophical perceptions -- so, reader beware! I could have done without the dramatic image of how the Nazi's conditioned themselves to become insensitive to human suffering (de Beauvoir used as an extreme example), but oh well... This book is a keeper, and very quotable! Highly recommended, especially for those diving into the Realm of Existentialism! --Katharena Eiermann, 2006

Concise Existential Account
By Davyde
By exploring the meaning of "existence before essence" and the fundamental reality of choice, Beauvoir presents the reader with a livable program for life in the modern and multiplicit world; namely existentialism. Ethics is both concise and poetic, maintaining a clarity that Being and Nothingness lacks. The Second Sex is essentially an entailment of the ideas explored in this book. Few other philosophers of the 20th century were able to combine practical philosophy and rigorous metaphysics with such eloquence.

Love it and haven't even seen it yet
By R. Muller
Love it and haven't even seen it yet. If its even half the quality of his prior books, it is a must buy.
If you are a dBASE developer, a beginner or expert, Ken's books are a must read.
For the beginner, its a must have in order to learn to program in dBASE professionally. He breaks down development into parts so even the beginner can produce expert applications.
For the expert, new advancements in the development platform is almost impossible to keep up with without Ken's books breaking it all down.
Even before reading this book, I'll look forward to the next.
