practical (mis)guide to whether to say yes

For those of us a little confused about whether we're with Mr. Right, this is a good practical guide to all the things you should look for. In fact, reading it, I immediately realized I should break up with my boyfriend. The big realization is this: if you have to read a book to decide whether to say yes, then you probably should ditch the relationship. Okay, so that has nothing to do with the book's content, still, some people are just so blinded by love or the promise of a fairy tale that a little reality check is in order.

I recommended the book to my sister... hoping it would shed light for her as well. [update: she broke up with her boyfriend, but no thanks to the book]

The author outlines basic check list of "must haves" in your man and gives evidence that the check list is valid.

Some may think the list is a bit over simplified, but having put it into some use, I can say that it's probably right on the mark. There are so many factors to every relationship, and it's all open for interpretation... but fundamentally, there are only a few things that are truly important. The study of long lasting relationships gives us the common denominator.

The book is a fun read. So the worst case scenerio is that it doesn't work and you have some fuel for a bonfire.

Eye-opener

I finished the book in one setting. It's so good. Mira urges us to trust our intuition and chemistry. I found a lot of examples very useful. And she wrote in an easy way to understand. Unlike, many books I have read on the subject, she doesn't focus too much on analyzing things. Basically, just trust your feeling. But it's hard to trust our feeling sometimes and we all have rationalization of why we shouldn't trust ourselves, and she uses examples to show us why we should. There are also a lot of practical suggestions in the book. I, personally found the suggestions about breaking up very informative. I think it's the best book on this subject!

About the Author
Ross King, Ph.D., is Professor of Korean and Head of the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. He completed his B.A. in Linguistics at Yale and his doctorate in Linguistics (Korean) at Harvard.

Jaehoon Yeon, Ph.D., is Professor of Korean Language and Linguistics and Chair of the Centre of Korean Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. He has published many books and articles on Korean grammar and linguistics.

Elementary Korean is the best

After studying Korean (on my own using internet sources etc etc) I have decided that this book is definitely by far one of the best books you can get for Korean. It contains an incredible amount of information. Most courses are quite small for Korean and do not contain a great deal, or are hard to manage. I have looked at the Rosetta Stone series for Korean (costing $300) and this $50 book is by far better than that whole program. It is better than any books I have seen in book stores. I have done the Pimsleur course which is a little strange in my opinion. Pimsleur does help with pronunciation a little bit but some of the language structure is a bit weird and not natural for the Korean Language. I feel that ever since I bought this book a couple weeks ago (I am on lesson 6 out of 15 I believe) I am learning at a much faster pace than I ever was before.

1) The grammar in this is excellent. It contains many many grammar points for every chapter and introduces them in a nice order (meaning you get important stuff first unlike some other courses I have looked at where you have to wait till near the end of the course to really dig into some good grammar).
2) The vocabulary consists of a surplus of words that anyone could ever want to learn as they are starting Korean.

I admit, this course is really hard and does contain a lot of information right from the start and might be hard on someone who does not know anything about Korean, but if you have already begun looking into the Korean Language, I highly recommend this. I do not know how good of a job it does teaching Hangul as I already knew most Hangul when beginning this book, but I do know it covered some points and specific irregulars and pronunciation rules that I had not previously known so it probably is very good at Hangul as well. Others have said to do the 2 Hangul chapters first, which might be a good idea to someone who does not know it. It should be a pretty good book for teaching Hangul but I am not entirely sure if it teaches well and easy to understand for someone who does not know Hangul, but it seems to do a good job. The first two chapters on just basic sentences and sayings people should know were alright in my opinion. Chapter 1 is good because it deals with just simple things like yes, no, nice to meet you, thank you, etc...But honestly, the romanization confuses me very very much so I would learn Hangul first (it has both romanization and Hangul in the chapters 1 and 2 because they do not introduce Hangul until chapter 3). The romanization has a chart for how to pronounce all the strange letters they use for romanization and all, and I honestly think Hangul would be much easier to learn than learning romanization used in these two chapters. But if you know the Hangul (which is covered in the book) then chapter 1 is very good. Chapter 2 covers basic information on what a teacher might say in the classroom or the students, which didn't do much for me as I am learning completely on my own. 3 and 4 is Hangul. Chapter 5 is where this book finally really kicks in. Starting with Chapter 5 you have all your lists of vocabulary, your dialogues, and many explanations on grammar. Chapter 5 is where it gets intense.

People have mentioned the audio cd is not very good. I disagree. I think it is excellent. Even though it is just one 74 minute cd (seemed like it wouldn't last very long) it has most anything on the cd you would want being pronounced. It does not give you time to repeat after them or does not say words twice, but it fits a lot of words and spoken Korean on the one cd. You can listen to it and figure out how the word should be said. The woman speaker speaks at a nice pace, while the male speaker is a little faster but still a nice pace in my opinion. Listening to the male speaker helps build your listening comprehension because when speaking with a real Korean it will be just as hard if not harder to understand. The cd is excellent in my opinion.

Lastly, I want to mention the exercises. There are exercises at the ends of the chapters (mainly beginning with Chapter 5 when the real lessons begin) which I highly recommend you doing. Luckily I am highly interested in the Korean language and find it very fun to learn so I can make myself do them. Some may seem a bit dull or long or pointless at first but I know that's not the case. When it says figure out what this is in Korean and write out the WHOLE sentence for each one, I highly recommend doing that. It will greatly help, even if it is a lot of work. It has all the answers (or answers that work - for example if it says translate this sentence into Korean, it will give a correct translation, when there are a couple different ways to translate it. That is the only problem I have found so far. Sometimes its hard to check your answers if your working on your own and they only give one possible solution...but, they do cover an answer for every exercise in the book.).

Overall, I like everything about this book. It covers everything very well.

Since I am looking mostly for reading/writing proficiency I find this to be a great book.

+ The grammar notes are clear and well illustrated.
+ The vocabulary is a lot but not completely overwhelming. The authors try to group closely related words physically close together to reduce the cost of learning new vocabulary.
+ Better than Myondo in presentation of material. Instead of spreading out related grammar material, it tries to present them together.
+ What I think is really great are the pronunciation rules ... you won't find this kind of practicality and detail in most other text. (Now, Myondo is very detailed but describing ssang-chiut as a voiceless alveo-palatal glottalized affricative isn't particularly helpful to me).
+ No Chinese characters are used in this book which is a plus at this level since Chinese characters rarely appear in the main text of popular Korean newspapers anyway
+ The authors actually provide a decent number of exercises with ANSWERS in the back! Now what they need to publish next is a supplementary reading and exercise book.

- I concur with a previous reviewer that the CD does not have enough basic sound examples.

Wonderful, but difficult book

As others have said, this book is difficult, but wonderful. It will not hold your hand, and you have to be dedicated to learning the language. Personally, I enjoy that its raw learning without all the fluffy stuff (corny graphics, etc). I love that it is all in Hangul without Romanizations (there are only Romanizations in chapters 1-3). I have used other texts that have full Romanizations and many times they end up hurting you in the end because they are wrong, inconsistant, and you become dependant on them. There is also a good Korean-English/English-Korean glossary in the back in Hangul-alphabetical order (most are not), so you don't really need a dictionary yet, but of course one wouldn't hurt (warning: the dictionary with the big L on the cover is good, but in Romanized-alphabetical order which can be a pain for looking up Hangul words). Here are some things that will help you though:
-Yes, the CD is super fast, but that is the normal speaking speed in Korea. What I did to make it easier to hear was to play the CD in Windows Media Player and use the "Play Speed" function to slow down the CD. It really helped!
-Have a very basic understanding of some linguistics terms such as voiced, unvoiced, unreleased, aspirated. The authors are trained linguistics and sometimes use some jargon, although it is usually explained.
-I highly recommend learning Hangul (the Korean alphabet) before starting this book. The authors do not introduce it (but still use it) until chapter 3, which is very difficult if you do not have a Korean teacher.
-That brings my last point. If you know a native Korean, make sure you use him/her as a resource. That probably goes without saying for any book. However, I have been learning Korean about 90% on my own, and have used this book as my guide fairly successfully (no fault of the book; it is just a HARD language to grasp).

On the mark analysis

The title of this book, The Architecture of Drama, intrigued me. While we all know that great drama has "structure," I never thought of it as being "architectural." But it is, of course, and plays and films that don't work suffer from bad architecture according to the authors David Letwin and Joe Stockdale, both veteran theater professionals and educators, and Mr. Stockdale's journalist wife, Robin. For writers, the greatest challenge is not the actual writing, but the architecture of the story. After reading this insightful, to-the-point and wonderfully entertaining book, I'll never think of drama quite the same. The authors stress that creative thought and inspiration isn't enough to forge memorable drama if the structure, the craft, the architecture--the plot, characters, theme, style, and genre--isn't strong and grounded in time-honored Aristotelian principles that can, and should be taught. Hopefully, their thoughtful, easily accessible approach to creating great drama, whether on the stage, on the screen, or in novels, will end up in the backpacks of every young person aspiring to a successful theater, motion picture, or writing career, and on the shelves of university and public libraries. The authors' analysis of popular, classic plays and films--why some worked and some didn't--makes for fascinating reading for everyone, professional and layman alike. After all, as the authors point out in this delightful, compelling book, the architecture of drama mirrors the architecture of our everyday lives. We can all learn something from it.

Simplicity Breeds Complexity

David Letwin & Joe and Robin Stockdale's The Architecture of Drama is an excellent guide to the inner workings of a play. Their approach is simple and straightforward. It has an elegant spareness, but perhaps because of the dictum, "simplicity breeds complexity," they have found a poetic depth that is resonant. For example, I love that in the section on Plot they address multiple possibilities, such as the circular, the dream, and the episodic, before they advance to the "gold standard" of the linear. They "make new" an eloquent case for the definition of character as the sum of her actions. It's extraordinary how blurred this idea can become in other books. In the section on Theme they explore beautifully the ambiguities of Williams's Streetcar, finally resolving their sense of theme through an architectural charting of character arc. This book is smart, it's grounded AND it has real flights; one can feel it comes from years on the boards.

Great Textbook

It's hard to imagine why this book hasn't already been written! The information is so basic, so essential, and so relevant to every playmaking experience, one imagines there must be dozens of similar books out there. Yet, I have yet to find one that even comes close to this book in its elegantly simple presentation of the most important part of playmaking: the architecture of the story. Working primarily from Aristotle's six elements of drama, the authors flesh out each subject in a manner that is concise, clear, and full of marvelous examples from both the great theatre canon and from Hollywood's greatest hits. For a subject that many feel is very dry, this is a marvelously entertaining book, which is probably the best reason to consider using it as a text book: your students will probably actually read it! I'll be using it in a class I teach on creating radio drama, as it is simply the most explicit treatise on the subject of linear storytelling that I have ever encountered.

Solid Introduction to Rook and Pawn Endings

Having previously purchased Müller's wonderful Fundamental Chess Endings book, I bought this book as soon as it came out. I have not had the time to read it in-depth yet, but I have enjoyed what I have read so far. Aided by 6- and even 7-pawn tablebases, the book covers Rook + Pawn vs. Rook endgames and Rook + 2 Pawn vs. Rook + 1 Pawn endgames in great depth, taking many of the positions from actual games and following the game to the conclusion, with notes on mistakes and improvements along the way.

Besides this in-depth coverage of simplified positions (including quizzes!), which take up 220 pages, there are small bonus chapters at the end of the book on Principals of Rook Endings, Theoretical Endgames, Historic Endgames, and Double Rook Endgames. These chapters are mostly taken from practical play and they illustrate (mostly) more complex endgames.

In the Theoretical Endgames chapter, I enjoyed the discussion of the famous Rook + f,g,h pawn endgame, with White having an extra a pawn.
These positions are fairly common and in over-the-board play I have had this ending at least twice. (In one typical position--with White pawns on a6, f2, g3, and h4, Black pawn on f7, g6, h5; the White rook on a7 in front of its pawn, with the Black Rook on a2, behind the pawn; the White King on e3 Black king on f6, with White to move this ending was once thought to be drawn, then the verdict was that it was won for White, and now the verdict is again that it is drawn. But black must play extremely accurately.) I have had a similar ending with b pawns instead of a pawns at least once, and this second ending is also discussed. I do wish though that the drawing line starting with 4...Ke6!! were discussed in more detail; for example the consequences of the winning attempt 7. R-b8, making room for the king, are not discussed (in the game Hollis-Florian the stronger side one due to an instructive error by his opponent).

In the penultimate, Historic Games, chapter, 11 historic games are discussed. I have seen at least a few of them, but they are important games and I welcome their inclusion and the thorough analysis of where the players went right or wrong.

I think this is a great book. I wish the Theoretical Endgames and Historic Games chapters could have been expanded, but the book is already large at 287 pages, so probably no more pages could have been added. I hope this excellent and practical book sells well. Hopefully in the future the final chapters on the more complex theoretical and historical endgames will be expanded into separate books.

This book is geared to those who seriously want to take up competitive chess. It is not for the casual player. Club players can omit Chapter 4 entirely, but knowledge of the other chapters would be useful. As said in the introduction the analysis is based on seven man tablebases and much of the pretablebase analysis was wrong. It only goes to show the difficulty of the topic and you find grandmasters, super-grandmasters and chess engines with five men tablebases erring and losing half a point. I agree with the previous reviewer that it would be nice if chapters 5 to 8 were longer and more detailed, and for this reasons I do not give it five stars.

This is a must have for your navigation station....... I can only say that if you value safety, thereby providing a more likely outcome of fun and pleasure, then use this volume, plan with this volume, and live by this volume and you will give yourself the widest margin of safety possible.

World Cruising Routes is a must read... AND FOLLOW! Going from Florida to Antillas (British Virgins Islands), I didn't follow exactly the advice of going only east first and I finished the trip with two tought days of wind on the nose because that!

Very Useful and Concise Information

As a yacht delivery skipper who sails 12,000+ nm per year I depend on Jimmy Cornell's Routes book to help me form the basis of an unfamiliar passage plan. I have recently executed several passages that are listed in the book and was pleased by the result (and the advance local knowledge provided me by this book). The seasonal weather patterns and speed of advance are often the most difficult aspects of planning long passages. This book helps. I just broke down and purchased the latest edition.

I gave only four stars because I disagree with the Jimmy's advice on the Hawaii to California route. I've done nine of these HI-CA passages and have never executed the passage as the book describes...and neither has any other yacht delivery captain that I'm aware of.
