Almost Like Being at the Premiere
By Timothy Kearney
Thomas Kelly's FIRST NIGHTS AT THE OPERA is bound to be loved by opera aficionados as well as people just beginning to be fascinated with a musical form that is both intricate and beautiful. Kelly selects five operas: Handel's Gulio Cesare, Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, Mayerbeer's LES HUGUENOTS, Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD, and Verdi's OTELLO, and brings the readers to their premieres. Kelly gives us information about each composer, the story of the works themselves, a history of how each work was composed and the difficulties surrounding each production, the effect that each work had on the musical world of its day and how the work is still relevant today. We also get a good deal of information of the performance itself, those who sang the principal roles, the conductors, impresarios, and anyone else involved in the production. Much of Kelly's information is not unique to his book, though his presentation is original and his inclusion of interesting graphics and a number of relevant historical documents regarding each work make this work an invaluable resource. His writing style makes the subject approachable, something not all authors who attempt to write about opera can claim.

As I read the book, I began to long for December and the beginning of live opera broadcasts from the stage of the Met. The in depth analysis of each work presented in a user friendly format made reminded me of the intermission features which are presented during the radio broadcasts from New York's Metropolitan Opera House. These broadcasts introduced me to the world of opera and Kelly's book reminds me why I love this form of music so much.

If you love opera, you owe it to yourself to add this book to your collection. If someone you love enjoys opera, this book will be the perfect gift that will be enjoyed for years to come.

The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application, by Paul G. Slade

Drawn from the author's more than four decades of practical experience in the industry, The Vacuum Interrupter: Theory, Design, and Application first discusses the design and manufacture of the vacuum interrupter before delving into its general application.

The book begins with a review of the vacuum breakdown process and what to consider when developing a design for a high-voltage application. It then discusses the vacuum arc and how its appearance changes as a function of current. This section concludes with an overview of existing contact materials, a summary of their advantages and disadvantages, an analysis of vacuum interrupter contact design, and considerations for the manufacture of vacuum interrupters. The next section on application describes the interruption process for low- and high-current vacuum arcs, examines the voltage escalation event that occurs if the contact gap is very small at the ac current zero, and explores the phenomenon of contact welding. It also studies the application of vacuum interrupters to switch load currents, circuit breakers, and reclosers.

Owing to the increasing need for environmentally friendly interrupting systems, the development of vacuum interrupters will only intensify over time. With extensive references in each chapter for further exploration, this comprehensive guide provides essential, up-to-date knowledge to fully understand this vital technology.

From School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up—Pratchett (The Long Utopia [HarperCollins, 2015]) leaves his fans with one last glorious tale of Discworld, this one starring his youngest heroine, the witch Tiffany Aching. When Death comes for Granny Weatherwax, she leaves behind her cabin and, by default, the job of unofficial leader of the witches to Tiffany. For the teen protagonist, being a witch has always been about doing what must be done, so she shoulders the burden but goes about things in her own way. She has soon taken on the first-ever male witch apprentice, Geoffrey, a man who has a soothing way with people and animals. Work becomes the least of Tiffany's problems once word of Granny Weatherwax's death reaches the realm of the elves. A cruel usurper casts out their Queen who is viewed as weak because of her caution after her earlier defeat by Tiffany and her wariness of the human's new iron horses. Tiffany shelters the diminished Queen while facing the threat of marauding elf hordes, backed by her trusty Nac Mac Feegles and other allies. Though this title was written during Pratchett's final days, there is nothing rushed here; indeed, this final book stands among the very best of his work. In one poignant scene, Death remarks on Granny Weatherwax's passing, "And far away, in someplace unthinkable, a white horse was being unsaddled by a figure with a scythe with, it must be said, some sorrow." And so, too, will readers mourn the loss of such an irreplaceable writing talent. VERDICT Readers young and old will savor this tale that emphasizes the values of hard work and standing firm in the face of evil. An exceptionally crafted finale from one of the greats.—Eric Norton, McMillan Memorial Library, Wisconsin Rapids, WI

Review
“Fans will also find plenty of well-loved elements: exuberant wordplay, vaudevillian humor, the rambunctious blue-skinned Nac Mac Feegle, and-beneath it all-a susurrus of shivery archetype and myth. Pratchett’s final work is a tour de force of compassion, great wit, and gleeful storytelling.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“There is something deeply suitable about the significant focus here on legacy and what is left behind. Savor this one; it’s literally the last authorized book coming.” (Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review))

“Terry was one of our greatest fantasists, and beyond a doubt the funniest.” (George R. R. Martin)

“A Terry Pratchett book is a small miracle.” (Neil Gaiman)

“Discworld is one of the very most fabulous creations in all of literature.” (Patrick Ness)

“No writer in my lifetime has given me as much pleasure and happiness.” (A. S. Byatt)

“A writer of monumental talent.” (Rick Riordan)

“Beloved fantasy writer Pratchett died this spring, and his dedicated and immense fan base will want his final novel. His storytelling is pure magic, and fans will grieve anew that this is the last of it. Stock up.” (Booklist)

“Elegiac and comforting, funny and serious.” (Horn Book Magazine)

A Worthy Farewell
By John Mosher
Like many other readers I approached Sir Terry's final book with a mix of excitement (A New Terry Pratchett book!!) and melancholy (it is the last Terry Pratchett book). I read it all in nearly one go.

There are several negative reviews posted here and elsewhere suggesting that those of us that enjoyed The Shepherd's Crown are merely reacting emotionally to it being Sir Terry's final book and are somehow incapable or unwilling to see the books faults. I would suggest that many of them are also having a purely emotional reaction because they did not like it, or perhaps it was not the final book they were hoping for. Several have even suggested that Sir Terry did not write The Shepherd's Crown, unable or unwilling to realize that Sir Terry's "voice" has been changing for awhile now. A degenerative fatal disease will do that to a person.

I did enjoy The Shepherd's Crown. It was not the final book I was hoping for; I would have preferred a final romp with the wizards or the Watch. But this is still a Discworld book. It is true this book has its faults. I agree with other reviews that sometimes minutiae are described in minute detail while many important events go by very quickly. I cannot complain about the appearance of a few tangential characters reacting to a major event. This event would no doubt be noticed by a great many people on the Disc. These appearances, particularly Mustrum Ridcully and the Patrician do feel a bit forced, but I view them more as Sir Terry giving a last Hail! and farewell to characters he loved the best and could not let his final work pass without them getting a nod. And it was much less intrusive than it could have been, and much less ridiculous than say Russell Davies pathetic goodbye to Doctor Who. And I did not find any characters demonstrably different from how they have acted in the past. Nanny Ogg seems to be singled out in many reviews, but I thought she was Nanny Ogg. Some have lamented that Sir Terry gave us a few new characters that we will now not get to know better. In some cases this is true, however those wishing for more Mrs Earwig have clearly missed what Sir Terry was telling us about her. In this book a elf causes a person to doubt themselves to make them unable to fight back. This power is strangely ineffective against Mrs Earwig. In my view this is because she is such self centered raging ego maniac that no power anywhere can make here doubt herself. A one dimensional throwaway character at best, and certainly one I did not wish to meet ever again.

The plot does indeed boil down to the elves are coming and Tiffany Aching in her new role must stop them. This is one of Sir Terry's young adult books, and as such, does not have the plethora of subplots and twenty major characters running around that we are accustomed to in other Discworld books. This in my view is also not worth complaining about.

The only thing that bothers me about this book is it shows us very clearly that even Sir Terry, with all his boundless optimism in the face of his health troubles was indeed losing his sense of humor. It began to show in Snuff, became a bit more pronounced in Raising Steam, and here it is undeniable. The only really funny bits are the easy laughs that can be had using the Feegles. Undeniably funny, but easy and far too few. Perhaps this was also a function of this being a young adult book and Sir Terry intentionally stayed away from true satire and commentary. I hope this is the case.

As his editor himself admits in his afterword, Sir Terry was unable to polish this book as he would have liked, to iron out the bits that many are complaining about. And it is a sometimes uneven read, no doubt. However, we must keep in mind that it did not get that final polish and allow some leeway there. We cannot simply wish for the book we wanted. This is the final chapter Sir Terry left us, warts and all, and while I agree it is not his best work, I feel Sir Terry would agree with that assessment as well, and we should not be upset that the publisher printed it in this state, we should be grateful that we were given one last go.

Sir Terry Says Goodbye…
By Dennis E. Henley
The Shepherd's Crown is Terry Pratchett's final novel and final Discworld story. It is Sir Terry's farewell to Discworld and, in a way, it is his farewell to his readers. The first three chapters seem almost as if Pratchett were writing his own eulogy. Then the story proper gets underway (and it's a good one) until it reaches its inevitable, heart-breaking conclusion.

This is an incredibly moving novel that spotlights Discworld's famous citizens. If you haven't read any Discworld novels, this is definitely not the book to start your journey. But if you've been a faithful reader, you owe it to yourself to visit this land of enchantment and wonder and bittersweet joy one last time.

Terry Pratchett wrote in Going Postal, "Do you not know that a man is not dead while his name is still spoken?" By this reasoning, Terry Pratchett will be around for a long, long time.

The last from Terry Pratchett, and a worthy end to the series.
By Jessica Weissman
We can't have another ten years of Discworld books; this is what we have. And it is far better than I expected. The plot makes sense, the emotional urgency is there, and Tiffany Aching is absolutely herself - as are the other witches.

In some spots the writing is perfunctory, and in other spots a minor point is belabored. All typical of a book that the author did not have time to polish. But the book is still emotionally satisfying and a true work of art. Fewer subplots than Terry in his prime...but he was not in his prime when he wrote this.

As for those who think he didn't write it, take a close look at what's here and what is in the books he truly had little part in, the Long Earth series. THOSE have only a little Pratchett. Cmpare the writing, compare the deftness of naming, compare the sentence structure, compare the emotional weight. This is real Pratchett, albeit diluted. Who else would have done the bit with the two pennies? That's not imitation Pratchett. It's real Pratchett.

Along the way he says a fond farewell/gives a tip of the hat to many other characters and sub-series from Discworld. A great deal of pleasure to be had here, if of the bittersweet variety.

Thirdspace: Journeys to Los Angeles and Other Real-and-Imagined Places, by Edward W. Soja

Contemporary critical studies have recently experienced a significant spatial turn. In what may eventually be seen as one of the most important intellectual and political developments in the late twentieth century, scholars have begun to interpret space and the embracing spatiality of human life with the same critical insight and emphasis that has traditionally been given to time and history on the one hand, and social relations and society on the other. Thirdspace is both an enquiry into the origins and impact of the spatial turn and an attempt to expand the scope and practical relevance of how we think about space and such related concepts as place, location, landscape, architecture, environment, home, city, region, territory, and geography.

The book's central argument is that spatial thinking, or what has been called the geographical or spatial imagination, has tended to be bicameral, or confined to two approaches. Spatiality is either seen as concrete material forms to be mapped, analyzed, and explained; or as mental constructs, ideas about and representations of space and its social significance. Edward Soja critically re-evaluates this dualism to create an alternative approach, one that comprehends both the material and mental dimensions of spatiality but also extends beyond them to new and different modes of spatial thinking.

Thirdspace is composed as a sequence of intellectual and empirical journeys, beginning with a spatial biography of Henri Lefebvre and his adventurous conceptualization of social space as simultaneously perceived, conceived, and lived. The author draws on Lefebvre to describe a trialectics of spatiality that threads though all subsequent journeys, reappearing in many new forms in bell hooks evocative exploration of the margins as a space of radical openness; in post-modern spatial feminist interpretations of the interplay of race, class, and gender; in the postcolonial critique and the new cultural politics of difference and identity; in Michel Foucault's heterotopologies and trialectics of space, knowledge, and power; and in interpretative tours of the Citadel of downtown Los Angeles, the Exopolis of Orange County, and the Centrum of Amsterdam.

Review
"There is much that is innovative and thought provoking in the book ..." Rob Atkinson, Capital and Class

"Thirdspace is Soja's most demanding theoretical work to date. It is a book which attempts to open up new ways of thinking about and responding to the binaries which continue to dominate the way we make practical and theoretical sense of the world. In concluding this short review of a very complex text I can only echo a comment Derek Gregory (1990:41) made when reviewing Soja's Postmodern Goegraphies: 'its intellectually sparkle is the product of a rare and generous critical intelligence'." Richard Bedford, University of Waikato

"In all, a compilation of empirical and intellectual journeys." The Geographical Journal " Such as serious and important undertaking by such a prodigious intellect compels an in-depth and extended transdisciplinary and critical dialogue. Its destiny, I suspect, is to be the centre of a heated and fruitful debate. ed Soja has changed how we think about space." Robert Beauregard, Milano graduate School of Management

"Soja offers a powerful new way of thinking that simultaneously takes apart and reorganizes the basic premise from which dualistic thinking derives power." Geographical Review

About the Author
Born in the Bronx and nurtured in its dense diversities, Edward Soja was a street geographer by the time he was ten and a doctoral student in Geography at Syracuse University just after turning twenty-one. For the next two decades, he specialized in the political geography of moderization and nation-building in Africa, holding visiting appointments at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, and at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. After seven years of teaching at Northwestern University, he joined the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning, UCLA, in 1972. He has twice been department chair in Urban Planning and, for nine years, was the Associate Dean. For the past fifteen years, he has been writing about the postmodernization of Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife Maureen and children, Christopher and Erika.

Applied Lefebvre
By Benjamin R. Bates
This book is not a bad book. It is an overly unoriginal one. An understanding of Henri Lefebvre's work on space (particularly _The Production of Space_) is required to understand what Soja is saying. Yet, if you have read Lefebvre, you probably do not need to read this book. About 1/3 of _Thirdspace_ consists of quotes from Lefebvre with a few conclusionary remarks made by Soja.
Soja's pastiche of Lefebvre quotes claims to explain two trialectical relationships. The first is the trialectics of being (p. 71), consisting of historicality, sociality, and spatiality. The second is the trialectics of spatiality (p. 74): perceived, conceived, and lived. Thank goodness for the helpful diagrams on these pages. They are the only parts of the theory sections that aren't based on long quotes from Lefebvre, White, Foucault, hooks, and any other person that Soja has read in the last 20 years. If you need original arguments about how space is performed, constructed, and lived, read one Soja's sources (especially "Production_).
The original arguments come when Soja leaves the realm of theory construction and turns to application. His reading of space and place in postmodern Los Angeles makes an important leap in spatial theory... it applies theory to something people can understand. If you have visited a large city, Soja's reading of L.A. will make sense, and make Lefebvre clearer. This is the most useful function of _Thirdspace_.
Although this book is not theoretically new or interesting, it gets some extra stars for having practical relevance... something that most theoreticians could use more of.

The Hidden Cost of Being African American: How Wealth Perpetuates Inequality, by Thomas M. Shapiro

Over the past three decades, racial prejudice in America has declined significantly and many African American families have seen a steady rise in employment and annual income. But alongside these encouraging signs, Thomas Shapiro argues in The Hidden Cost of Being African American, fundamental levels of racial inequality persist, particularly in the area of asset accumulation--inheritance, savings accounts, stocks, bonds, home equity, and other investments. Shapiro reveals how the lack of these family assets along with continuing racial discrimination in crucial areas like homeownership dramatically impact the everyday lives of many black families, reversing gains earned in schools and on jobs, and perpetuating the cycle of poverty in which far too many find themselves trapped.
Shapiro uses a combination of in-depth interviews with almost 200 families from Los Angeles, Boston, and St. Louis, and national survey data with 10,000 families to show how racial inequality is transmitted across generations. We see how those families with private wealth are able to move up from generation to generation, relocating to safer communities with better schools and passing along the accompanying advantages to their children. At the same time those without significant wealth remain trapped in communities that don't allow them to move up, no matter how hard they work. Shapiro challenges white middle class families to consider how the privileges that wealth brings not only improve their own chances but also hold back people who don't have them. This "wealthfare" is a legacy of inequality that, if unchanged, will project social injustice far into the future.
Showing that over half of black families fall below the asset poverty line at the beginning of the new century, The Hidden Cost of Being African American will challenge all Americans to reconsider what must be done to end racial inequality.

From Publishers Weekly
Shapiro, coauthor of Black Wealth/White Wealth, has helped establish that the racial gap in wealth-i.e., assets, including property-is more enduring than the gap in income. That gap, a 10-fold ratio, is exemplified by what the author terms "transformative assets"-gifts, from parents and others, that work to lift succeeding generations economically and socially beyond their own achievements. Interviews with black, white and Hispanic families in Boston, Los Angeles and St. Louis show families with similar incomes living in stratified neighborhoods (and better school districts) thanks to parental help. Most of the white interviewees don't recognize the role of Shapiro's form of privilege in their lives, while middle-class blacks report far more issues with needy parents, relatives and friends. Shapiro, who holds a chair in law and social policy at Brandeis, also shows why it costs more for blacks to buy homes: discrimination in credit, higher interest rates (whites have more capacity to pay "points") and depressed home values caused by residential segregation all contribute. At the same time, Shapiro says, policies such as the federal tax break on mortgage interest perpetuates inequality by making the relatively rich richer. He proposes several class-based, tax-eased solutions at the federal level that go beyond social security: children's savings accounts; individual development accounts that match savings; and down payment accounts to help buy homes, drawn from a partial tax credit for renters. Such policies, he reminds us, would hardly be outlandish; they echo previous asset-building policies such as the Homestead Act, the GI Bill and Veterans Administration home loans. A reformed estate tax, he argues, would also help move toward fairness. With all the data Shapiro convincingly pulls together, this should be an essential document for policy groups and could reframe the debate around affirmative action and reparations.

From Booklist
Shapiro follows up on his earlier work, Black Wealth/White Wealth (1995), which reflected on the racial inequality that is passed from one generation to the next. In this book, Shapiro relates stories, drawn from interviews with both blacks and whites, from the Boston, L.A., and St. Louis areas, of how individuals and families use their assets to secure advantage and opportunities. Shapiro focuses not just on inherited wealth but also on what he calls transformative assets, which help to get families beyond their own achievement levels, for instance, providing a down payment for a home. He explores the equity values associated with owning homes and the connection between home ownership, community, and high-quality education. He also examines government policies that impact racial inequality, including the post-World War II housing boom facilitated by the FHA, which excluded black participation, negatively affecting generations to follow. Shapiro does an excellent job of showing the connections between racial inequality, opportunities, and family wealth. Vernon Ford

Review
"Powerfully mixes poignant individual stories and moral outrage with clear statistical analyses and a strong exposition of a workable solution to continued, severe racial inequality."--Boston Globe

"With all the data Shapiro convincingly pulls together, this should be an essential document for policy groups and could reframe the debate around affirmative action and reparations."--Publishers Weekly

"Shapiro does an excellent job of showing the connections between racial inequality, opportunities, and family wealth."--Booklist

"How can disadvantage persist so long after most laws, minds and practices have changed? Shapiro argues in this sober and authoritative book that we should look to disparities of wealth for the answer.... Few of his proposals may be tried in the current political climate, where far more pressure goes toward abolishing inheritance taxes altogether. Yet by giving such a frank and probing appraisal of the long-term damage wrought by unequal wealth, Shapiro continues to press the case for resolving America's most stubborn and profound source of racial division."--Washington Post Book World

"This book almost unerringly finds its mark."--Crisis

"Shapiro's book deserves attention for its focus on an enduring fissure in Americans' ideas about themselves. There were and are considerably fewer self-made men in the New World than the current mythology enumerates. Those who enjoyed success largely did so abetted by the sweated labor of those whom they owned or hired, not to mention their wives, who kept their homes clean and bore their children. Inequality was the favored few's leg-up on life. If that advantage persists, as Shapiro suggests it has, and if it is being replicated through generations, because of the financial advantages reaped by the founders of those generations, as he also suggests, then it is time to consider ways to redress the balance of inequality."--The New Leader

"An important book about the troubling and persistent disparities of wealth along racial lines. It deepens our critical understanding of how inherited wealth distorts real meritocracy and equal opportunity." --Bill Gates Sr. and Chuck Collins, co-authors of Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes

"This important book takes the critical next step in wealth research: Through intimate portraits of American families it shows how wealth matters. Shapiro convincingly demonstrates how parents use household wealth to foster advantage for their children--and how African Americans are at a distinct disadvantage in this game by virtue of a relative lack of family assets. Important reading for anyone interested in how race and class works in contemporary America." --Dalton Conley, author of Honky

"A great read and a remarkable advance in showing how assets take on profound importance in shaping racial inequality in America. With its masterful combination of indepth interviews and quantitative data, it will convince even the most skeptical reader that the playing field is far from level." --Mitchell Duneier, author of Sidewalk and Slim's Table: Race, Respectability, and Masculinity

"This insightful study adds to a growing body of research documenting that asset holding has important effects on well-being, independent of income. Shapiro explores complex relationships among race, home ownership, and educational opportunity. He assesses the cost of being black in these crucial interactions. He introduces the concept of transformative assets to describe inherited wealth that makes a difference in life chances. This book should be read by anyone concerned about race, wealth, and the future of America." --Michael Sherraden, Benjamin E. Youngdahl Professor of Social Development, Washington University in St. Louis

A Worthy Successor to Black Wealth/White Wealth
By Fred McGhee
Make no mistake about it. The snide comment by Washington Post reviewer Michael Hout above indicates a fundamental inability to comprehend what Shapiro is saying. Why would Hout choose to write this in his review?:

"Families and generations are at the core of Shapiro's analysis. So I was surprised that he did not directly address how marriage and family structure fit into the cycles of accumulation, inheritance and investment. Married couples accumulate more wealth than single parents do, according to other researchers. That suggests to me that African-American family issues must play a role in the wealth gap."

Hout obviously is attempting to make a point about the high rate of single parent families within Black America, and is implying that if only Black women chose to marry the fathers of their babies that they would not suffer many of the consequences Shapiro lays out in his book. There is but one problem: Shapiro addresses this lame-ass "culture of poverty" nonsense repeatedly in his book, and convincingly shows that even if Black marriage rates were equal to white rates that African-Americans would STILL have less wealth, educational opportunities, and transformative assets. Moreover, Shapiro does a good job of pointing out the motivations behind WHY whites like Mr. Houst consistenly resort to the same trite culturalist arguments of Black pathology when confronted with the troubling facts: they can't bring themselves to admit that their white privilege was constructed and is maintained at the expense of people of color, especially Blacks, because it shatters their deep-seated need to believe that they "earned" everything that they have instead of having been bequeathed it as a result of generations of racial prejudice and institutional racism.

Perhaps the sublety of Mr. Shapiro's argument was a tad too much for Mr. Houst and his editors at the Washington Post.

If anything, Shapiro's argument can be argued from a left perspective to be an insufficient "liberal" formulation that refuses to engage and critique the structural inequalities of capitalism head-on, substituting a Ford Foundation-esque "asset accumulation" prescription for maladies that require far more radical measures. As authors such as Manning Marable have noted for years, much of American capitalism was structurally DESIGNED to UNDERDEVELOP Black America and continues to operate in this fashion. Thus arguing that Blacks simply need "more" wealth in order to achieve racial parity overlooks many sociological and anthropological insights about race developed over the past thirty years, as well as many Marxian insights about race that have been floating around for years as well.

Still, even as a half-measure, this is a highly enlightening and challenging read. It is sure to make many white families uncomfortable because they will probably see themselves in much of what Shapiro writes. Which is the point.

A BOOK WITH PROFOUND IMPLICATIONS
By A Customer
Black people are bringing home bigger paychecks than ever. They face less overt racism on a day-to-day basis. Everything's copacetic, right? WRONG. This book is so important because it shows why African Americans pass along inequality from generation to generation. Most white people who "make it on their own" it turns out, tend to have a little help from their parents in buying their first house. $10,000, $20,000, or more, this means that they can put more money down, get a lower interst rate, move into a better neighborhood, with better schools, so their kids get better educations and all of the priveleges that access to such schools brings. And it all happens again in the next generation.
Shapiro brings this to life by talking to black and white people about how they have made their way in the world. Inherited assets, it turns out, have a lot to do with it.
This is a book that will force black and white people alike to think about how racial inequality is passed down from generation to generation. I myself would argue that it makes the case for at least a more serious discussion of reparations in the form of home buying grants or something of that kind, and an INCREASE in the so-called "death tax".
Read it and think about it!

"The concept of a stakeholder society": A Look at Wealth, Inequality, and Innovative Solutions
By vabookreader
Thomas M. Shapiro's _The Hidden Cost of Being African American_ (2004) is a powerful book that offers a unique look at economic inequality across racial lines. His discussion is not yet part of the mainstream discussion of race and government policy, but it should be, and his book makes an important contribution. His analysis is convincing, and the solutions he offers are worth serious consideration.

Shapiro's methodology is engaging. He uses statistical data aggregated from the longitudinal Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID)-an ongoing government funded study begun in 1968 that examines the finances of approximately 8,000 American families. In addition, he and his research team interviewed approximately 200 families in Boston, St. Louis, and Los Angeles, half of whom were black, half were white, with a subset of latino families. Shapiro blends statistical data with the voices of the families he has interviewed. People discuss their salaries, their financial assets, their reasoning for buying and selling homes, and their thoughts about money. This approach makes for a highly readable book.

Based on PSID data and the interviews, Shapiro focuses on the imbalance in asset-share between African Americans and white Americans, and its repercussions. He shifts the discussion from one focused on salaries, where in the last two decades there has been progress toward greater parity between whites' and blacks' wages, to a study of real assets. From an asset perspective, Shapiro argues, the nation's economic picture is very problematic.

Shapiro shows that in general, African Americans' accumulated financial assets are considerably smaller than whites', leading to fewer economic opportunities, greater economic hardship, and less access to wealth creation opportunities. The diminished asset share stems directly from the nation's history of racial oppression when African Americans did not have the same opportunities to amass wealth over generations. Shapiro outlines the real consequences of this difference in assets.

A financial asset perspective offers a global picture of economic wellbeing that includes a family's savings accounts, stocks and other investments, home equity, and inherited wealth through gifts and bequests. One of Shapiro's main points is that white families, in general, have much greater access to "transformative assets"-wealth and gifts inherited from previous generations-which enable families to enjoy opportunities that they have inherited from previous generations but have not earned themselves through merit. Shapiro looks at the types of advantages that come with these "transformative assets" and generational wealth, including down payments on homes and college educations paid for by parents and grandparents, as well as inheritable legacies from grandparents and parents. These "transformative assets" lead to considerable (and often profound) differences in social and economic opportunity and quality of life, even when wages are comparable.

Shapiro offers an illuminating discussion of schools and the housing market, showing connections between race and economics. He looks at how people's individual choices often entrench economic and social inequality, wittingly and unwittingly. At the end of the book, he offers a number of remedies, both market and government-incentive based, to create a "stakeholder" society where asset growth is promoted for the working poor and the middle class.

For example, one proposal is for Children Savings Accounts. Shapiro points out that if a child had an initial bank account of $1,000 and $500 were contributed annually, by the time the child reached 18 years old, he or she would have about $40,000. This is one way to provide transformative assets-for a down payment on a house, education, etc-to all Americans.

This is an excellent book with many important insights.

but I was particularly disappointed with this purchase
By Jessalyn Sbaratta
I don't often write reviews, but I was particularly disappointed with this purchase. I ordered this book to help me learn Swift, but I have already requested a refund. The book is cheaply printed, so all of the pictures and diagrams are faded and illegible. Some of them even have watermarks from the websites the authors collected them from. The quality of the content is definitely lacking as well. If you're looking for a beginner's book on Swift, do yourself a favor and skip this one. The Big Nerd Ranch Guide on Swift Programming is a much better alternative.
