Still a gift.

Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of the famous transatlantic pilot, suffered the tragic loss of her baby who was kidnapped and murdered in about 1933. That may be the basis of Anne's deeply introspective reflections, but it's not subject of her book. Her meditations and quiet moments on the seashore inspire a re-evaluation of the simple objects of life. Her analogies of the sand, the shells, and the surf -- as they apply to man's existence -- are without parallel.

Just as Good the Second Time

The most important tool of a photographer is located behind the viewfinder. Photographers need just as much instruction in using their brain and soul for photography as they need to be taught about exposure, focus and composition.

David duChemin’s book is aimed at doing just that. This book speaks of developing photographers’ vision. Although he mentions from time to time such concepts as say, depth of field, the discussion is related to how to use these concepts to express vision. Unfortunately, the shaping of the inner photographer is not as concise as setting an f-stop. Instead the author talks about things like becoming one with the subject being photographed. (That’s not duChemin’s phrase; it belongs to a wildlife photographer’s lecture of years ago. At the time I thought he was crazy; now I try to commune with birds all the time.)

The author tells us that vision is his theme. He compares the conflict between vision and equipment and emphasizes the importance of using images to tell stories. He follows this with several chapters, ostensibly aimed at different genres, like people, places and culture, but all interwoven with finding the photographer within.

DuChemin’s points are illustrated with his excellent pictures that tell you as much about his vision as about the subject. On the other hand, the author doesn’t take himself too seriously, as when, after advising the reader of the diffraction dangers of shooting at f/22, he tells us that this is advice he rarely heeds.

When I read the first edition of this book I was bowled over. DuChemin articulated the undeveloped ideas that had been floating around inside my head. Since reading that book, I regularly think about my vision, and when asked what item of equipment I would like to get next for my photography, I always answer vision. I can’t compare the second edition to the first edition, but I can say that even though I’m familiar with the ideas in this edition, the author has reinforced the use of the most important tool in my photographic arsenal.

I can also suggest to you that paying attention to duChemin’s ideas about vision will not only make you a better photographer. It might make you a better person. (Don’t ask me to explain that statement.)

If you are a photographer and you haven’t read the first edition of this book, you need to read this edition. If you have read the first edition, you still need to read this edition.

A Thoughtful Picture

As I read this new edition I could see the changes in the author's work, already excellent, now even more outstanding. The book is not a technical one but shows a way of thinking and connecting with place and people. A truly insightful approach. Having read it it, I am sure it's effect will be to have me slow down and try to capture the spirit, the essence of the places I travel too. It is well worth reading.

If you're not familiar with David's work and you love making photographs

If you're not familiar with David's work and you love making photographs, you should. David's book Within the Frame is one of the best books on photography there is. You won't find a whole lot about f-stops and lens choices here because David is all about what, or who, is behind the camera and their vision. Find his website while you're at it because his blog in fantastic. I'm a photography instructor at the college level and this book is on my must read list for all my classes. Highly recommended!

About the Author

Scott Oaks is an architect at Oracle Corporation, where he works on the performance of Oracle’s middleware software. Prior to joining Oracle, he worked for years at Sun Microsystems, specializing in many disparate technologies from the SunOS kernel to network programming and RPCs to windows systems and the OPEN LOOK Virtual Window Manager. In 1996, Scott became a Java evangelist for Sun and in 2001 joined their Java Performance group--which has been his primary focus ever since. Scott also authored O’Reilly’s Java Security, Java Threads, JXTA in a Nutshell, and Jini in a Nutshell titles.

A must buy for every Java developer struggling with performance or lacking understanding of how JVM works

Java Performance: The Definitive Guide is the best Java book I read this year. In about 400 pages Scott Oaks touches every aspect of Java-based applications, from core terminology and methodologies, through tooling, JIT, garbage collection, threading etc., to reach high-level topics, such as Java EE, JDBC/JPA, Java 8 and even... JavaScript and CSS compression. But let's go through this book chapter by chapter.

First the author explains common terms like what is a microbenchmark, measuring throughput versus response time, etc. Surprisingly few sections are devoted solely to statistics and interpretation of inherently varying benchmark results. Oaks goes as far as briefly explaining Student's t-test - important tool in measuring correctness of tests. I found that part very enjoyable (and way too short), but it's just about enough for ordinary purposes. Now it's time to get our hands dirty. Before we start exploring Java performance, author goes through various tool, both available out-of-the-box in JDK and proprietary. A lot is said about different types of profilers - and why they don't show the full picture.

JIT (just-in-time) compiler turns out to be one of the most important tools bringing performance to the JVM. First "real" chapter goes into great details of how JIT works in different modes, how to monitor and tune it. I learnt a lot already, but the best is yet to come. Obviously garbage collection is a major concern, thus Oaks devotes two full chapters to explain all popular GC algorithms. Besides pure description, expect strengths and weaknesses of every algorithm as well as unique tuning options. These two chapters are enough to buy this book, but there's plenty more.

Further into the book, topics are becoming more high-level. We start with assembly and JIT, through GC, heap and native memory, to reach chapters about threading, thread pools and synchronization. There are many, many examples of proper and broken use of multi-threading, including benchmarks - present throughout whole book as well. We also learn how to monitor and tune threads. Later we learn about somewhat related Java EE topics, including XML parsing performance (expect plenty of SAX/StAX/DOM benchmarks!), JSON and Java serialization. Also HTTP sessions and servlets are well covered, with amazing benchmarks how bloated session or incorrectly tuned thread pools affect performance. I was really amazed to see how increasing heap can degrade (!) performance. Last chapter, "Java SE API Tips" is surprisingly interesting, with many good advices about collections, streams and lambdas introduced in Java 8, class loading, I/O, etc. I think you see the overall picture by now - we start almost from hardware level to reach JDBC/JPA and JDK level in the end. Similarly to first chapter, still every concept is accompanied with microbenchmark.

Because this not-so-long book still manages to cover wide range of subjects, I can honestly recommend it to beginners and more experienced Java developers (the former should probably start reading it from back to front). Some aspects are covered only briefly, but in general it was a very enjoyable and thought-provoking lecture. A must buy for every Java developer struggling with performance or lacking understanding of how JVM works. Highly recommended.

Generally a nice book and a good thing to use as references though I guess JVM documentation can do the same thing. The take-out of this book is that it can guide you into situation when you might want to think about some JVM param tuning. The author is also quite honest in his writing at the beginning. The best and most applicable way to improve software performance is at the algorithm and coding level.

Some readers here may dissect his examples further, but I think the author has already cautioned us at the beginning about the gain from tuning JVM parameters. Defaults JVM parameters will be good in the vast majority of cases. Overall, I would like to give a 3.5, but since I can't do that. I think 3 is a fair score.

Java Performance: The Penultimate Guide

Found this book more practical (and up to date) than Java Performance and Java Performance Tuning. Good explanations of how the different garbage collection algorithms work, how a JIT compiler can optimize code, threading-related issues etc.

The author also shows how to use the tools that ship with Java to see what's going on. Tools like Caliper or JMH for doing valid micro-benchmarks, and JMeter or Gatling for load testing aren't covered, but should at least have been mentioned.

Java Enterprise Performance might need a separate book: Some topics are covered well, but others, like the discussion of optimizing web pages are a bit lacking (read Even Faster Web Sites instead), or missing (no mention of alternatives for serializing data like Protocol Buffers or Avro, or any discussion of "NoSQL"-specific issues).

Kauffman, an independent Lincoln assassination scholar, offers a beautifully written, exhaustive and well-reasoned reassessment of John Wilkes Booth and the murder of America's 16th president. The story Kauffman tells, though highly familiar, is also byzantine enough to still capture our attention. More importantly, Kauffman puts a new spin on well-worn data, adding a riveting reinterpretation that paints Booth as a ruthless player of complex games: a darkly brilliant manipulator of people, not all of whom realized what they were a part of until after Lincoln lay dead. Booth reveled in creating false impressions and planting strategic misinformation. One example involves Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set Booth's fractured leg before learning of the assassination and then, frightened for his life, made the mistake of denying knowing the actor. Years later, Gen. David Hunter—ranking member of the military commission that tried and sentenced Mudd to prison—commented: "The Court never believed that Dr. Mudd knew anything about Booth's designs. Booth made him a tool as he had done others." Kauffman's Booth is, in the end, a crazed but skilled puppetmaster who, as part of his endgame, needed to make sure that most of his puppets joined him in martyrdom for the Confederate cause. In this thorough review of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, Kauffman seems to have examined everything--documents, places, and artifacts--related to the case. He reports having spent 400 hours in the assassin's home, indicating his dedication to unearthing all the facts about the plots of John Wilkes Booth. Fortunately, dedication doesn't degenerate into obsession with any single angle: Kauffman announces no astounding revelation--such as a link between the assassin and the Confederate government. He does stress, however, the forensic sloppiness of the investigation, albeit without insinuating the wrong people were caught, tried, and hanged. While joining the historical chorus that innkeeper Mary Surratt, whatever her knowledge of the plotters, might not have deserved the rope, Kauffman's tracking of Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt doesn't clear them of consorting with Booth. Myths are exploded!

AMERICAN BRUTUS starts with the assassination of Lincoln. Kauffman quotes just about everybody who was at Ford's theater when it happened: audience members, stage hands, actors etc. Then he moves to the initial investigations and the several law enforcement officers and detectives who were on the trail of the killers. It's hard to keep everybody straight.

Not until Chapter Five do we get a glimpse of Booth's background. His father was also an actor and seemed to get along well with the "rented" slaves he kept. Junius Booth Sr. had no problem with negroes eating at the same table. Kauffman suggests that military school may have had something to do with Booth's attitude toward blacks.

Kauffman hypothesizes that Booth saw himself as a Brutus character. According to Booth, Lincoln was a tyrant, like Julius Caesar, who had trampled on the Constitution. In the picture section, we see John Wilkes acting with his brothers in Julius Caesar, although he played Mark Antony to Edwin's Brutus. Kauffman says John Wilkes played many such characters throughout his career.

There are several other illuminating hypotheses in AMERICAN BRUTUS. One would be that Booth tried to implicate anyone he talked to about the plot, plus several other innocent bystanders. He shows how Dr. Mudd was "set up" by Booth and Surratt. He also shows how Booth tried to do this with Vice President Johnson by leaving him a note prior to the assassination.

Kauffman also works hard at exploding several misconceptions about the assassination. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton is shown taking charge after Lincoln was shot. Far from hating Lincoln, he was genuinely fond of the president. Also, John Wilkes Booth did not break his leg when he jumped from Lincoln's box. Kauffman shows that this notion came from the journal Booth kept during his flight, which was packed with other deliberate fabrications. Most surprising for me, I guess, was Kauffman's portrayal of Lewis Thornton Powell. The myth has it that Powell was insane, but Kauffman shows that Powell's lawyer used an insanity defense during the trail, which may have given historians a wrong idea; Powell was a member of Mosby's Rangers prior to the assassination and faced death bravely.

The trial segment was kind of dull. Eight people were tried by a military tribunal, including a woman. The prosecution did not have to furnish all of the evidence it found to the various defense attorneys. Some of the testimony was faked. Yet, four of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment and were eventually pardoned by President Johnson as he left office.

For me, the Coda was the most interesting part of the book as the reader gets to find out what happened to all of the principals later on in life. Henry Rathbone, for instance, who accompanied Lincoln and his wife to the play, never fully recovered from his stabbing and eventually murdered his wife.

Tons of footnotes with occasional commentary within. I'm still reading them.

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of attending the John Wilkes Booth Escape Route tour sponsored by the Surratt Society (...). Mr. Kauffman was the tour guide and I enjoyed the tour greatly. So I looked forward to this book.

Mr. Kauffman has done what other historians have not: he went back to the eye-witness accounts taken on that night and the following days. In other words, he used information that has not been polluted by the exaggeration and imagination of the human memory. For example, immediate eye-witness accounts at Ford's Theater dispell the oft-quoted "fact" that that Booth broke his leg when he jumped from the balcony to the stage.

But this book does not address Booth's escape only. Mr. Kauffman includes additional information about the times. The contemporary reader will be interested in the parallels between 1860-1865 USA and the current status of the USA: a politically polarized nation, criminal profiling (a US Congressman was detained at a train station because he looked somewhat like Booth), sketchy homeland security (the bridges out of DC were like sieves allowing Booth and Herold to escape), a massive military search for the assassins, joyous celebrations in foreign countries and anti-American sentiment following an American tragedy, etc.

Mr. Kauffman's Booth is a consummate villian who carefully and thoughtfully plotted the Lincoln Assassination and who skillfully manipulated numerous people, thus entangling them into his web. His book gives the reader a good idea of the times and shows us that after 130 years, nothing much has really changed.

Wonderful book. Well researched. Well presented.
