Computer Forensics offers information professionals a disciplined approach to implementing a comprehensive incident-response plan, with a focus on being able to detect intruders, discover what damage they did, and hopefully find out who they are.

There is little doubt that the authors are serious about cyberinvestigation. They advise companies to "treat every case like it will end up in court," and although this sounds extreme, it is good advice. Upon detecting a malicious attack on a system, many system administrators react instinctively. This often involves fixing the problem with minimal downtime, then providing the necessary incremental security to protect against an identical attack. The authors warn that this approach often contaminates evidence and makes it difficult to track the perpetrator. This book describes how to maximize system uptime while protecting the integrity of the "crime scene."

The bulk of Computer Forensics details the technical skills required to become an effective electronic sleuth, with an emphasis on providing a well-documented basis for a criminal investigation. The key to success is becoming a "white hat" hacker in order to combat the criminal "black hat" hackers. The message is clear: if you're not smart enough to break into someone else's system, you're probably not smart enough to catch someone breaking into your system. In this vein, the authors use a number of technical examples and encourage the readers to develop expertise in Unix/Linux and Windows NT fundamentals. This is an outstanding book. Well written, very educational. If you're tasked with handling computer security incidents, you'll want to have a copy of this book on your bookshelf. The first chapter is an outstanding quick overview of the entire scope of incident response.

Good reference for Computer forensics basic

A well organized book begins with clear and precise explanation on the basic of computer forensics.
Chapter 3 provides good technical information on storage media. And it goes on forensics in Windows and Unix from Chapter 8 throught Chapter 11.
The section I like the most is Appendix A, which gives you comprehensive guidelines in dealing with incident response (a good sell to senior management).
It is not a technical reference book but it is one of those "have-to-have" introduction books for anyone who is new in this field.

I've been reading on narcissism/ border lines/ trauma bonding/ Stockholm syndrome/co-dependency and misoginy for 4.7 years. It's been a brutal search for info and anything I can get my hands on to understand. If you've been confused and worn down long enough you get what I'm saying immediately. All the literature, counseling, education I've obtained has all been worth it, but nothing, and I mean nothing explains it better than HG TUDORS books. It is valuable, valuable precious insight to hear it from a man who lives this life. No other literature I've ever read has done this. It's exactly what I needed to read. Something wasn't entirely clicking before.... I would still drift into fantasy and well... Hope my N would see the light, or I would break and make contact again. For the first time I'm not tempted to do that. My only warning is because his writing is shocking, brutally painful and sadly real it's only going to change things for you if you're totally willing to see the truth and live in reality.
It's not fun or pretty, but it's honest.

REALIST WORDS EVER

EDUCATE YOURSELF!! I read constantly on my ex narcissist along with researching other cluster Bs and most of all, God and prayer, keeps me on my toes to resist the Hoover and to understand that "it's not me, it's him." HG's description of his words and actions were EXACTLY what I experienced, even exact full sentences at times. Reading various psychology books helps but to read an actual Ns perspective takes my healing and strength to a whole new level as HG confirms my ex narc's major abnormalities and issues. His life is miserable (never admitting to such of course), not mine! God doesn't waste an experience in this life so I know the relationship happened for a reason. I left my ex for the final time 6 months ago and positive changes in myself and life are manifesting. With much prayer and continuous research, ive resisted his multiple Hoover attempts. Yay ME! No contact is truly what I needed to get my knowledge and strength built up to resist the hoovers attempts I now receive but me being a rebel by nature I like to practice my skills so I recently and only occasionally respond via text with what I know he is really thinking and wanting (and next steps that I know he plans, when I feel like doing so) but NEVER giving into his loads of crap which he is def not used to any of that with me. It makes ME feel better to know I can resist, regardless of the fuel he gets at the time. To see my ex narc's various Hoover tactics that used to work on me, now get shot down in flames, Im amused. Im finally able to brush his attempts to devalue me off my shoulder, after I have picked at his empty soul and if I'm not choosing to ignore him entirely at the time :) again, this makes ME feel better about my growth, not to try to hurt my ex since feelings, emotions, remorse, empathy and guilt don't exist in him. Heres your dose of fuel HG, thank YOU for every word in this book and all of the others you've written as well that have opened my eyes even wider to my past but mainly my future..while I walk this empathic road in life.

Read It And Weep.

This book seems to be written from the male perspective but any man married to a woman like this knows how evil bounces both ways. This is not an enjoyable read but a necessary one if we are to recognize the narcissists and sociopaths that we come into contact with on a daily basis. Maybe you even see one in the mirror each morning. Author HG Tudor has collected a plethora of anecdotes that abusers use to keep their victims compliant. Read it and weep.

Drone pilots -- who are they? and why it matters...

I'd heard about this being presented as a "one woman" theater production.
I never asked the question... "who flies the drones"? Are they pilots? How
do they get this kind of duty assignment? Where are they based? What is
their daily routine like? How is it different than flying aerial missions? What
is the psychological effect of having drone flying as a "job"... does the sense
of a military assignment disappear over time? So I'm framing this review as
a series of questions so as not to have to give a spoiler alert.

For any Vietnam veteran reading this -- it shakes the whole concept of "war".
For an Iraqi - Afghan veteran read this -- there is a sinking feeling of having devolved
into a different definition of soldiering, of serving and protecting.
And then... I think I heard that the play had been hijacked and made into a movie
with a male lead... Not the same! part of the tension in the journey is that this is
the hero's journey taken by.... a woman. And can it still be called... a hero's journey.

Lunt's book is exactly what he described it to be. He never said it's a study in comparative linguistic or a "how to" textbook, but a reference grammar. And a pretty good one. His tables and charts are well organized and provide a nice summary and reference to OCS grammar. I also like the fact that he included a section on syntax, something badly missing in most grammar books. I do wish he included more examples of actual text beyond just a simple phrase, but that's just my personal preference. His examples are sufficient to illustrate the principle discussed.

Lunt is the Standard Reference Grammar for Old Church Slavonic

This is the standard classic grammar in English for Old Church Slavonic. The work is short (143 pages) but well organized and nicely setup. The charts of declensions and conjugations are clean and well done. The discussion of points is brief, but all are illustrated with specific examples.

This is designed to be a short reference grammar for the Old Church Slavonic language itself, not a comparative study or tool. This is a helpful tool for those studying Old Church Slavonic. If your interest is liturgical, the better choice in English is Father Shaw's translation of Gamanovich's Grammar of liturgical Church Slavonic.

It's the reference grammar to use.

If you want to take the OCS challenge, this is the grammar to buy. It has the information that you need.

Someone who is an advanced student or scholar of comparative linguistics could certainly use this book to get the most important grammatical information about the language.

However, if you want to learn to read texts in OCS, you will need a glossary of the language (Professor Lunt created one, but I do not know if it is still available).

And you really will have to sit down with some other people in a classroom, with a qualified instructor, where you can learn to parse normalized and, later, non-normalized texts.

Frank, a professor of economics at Cornell and the author of The Winner-Take-All Society, castigates Americans for wasteful spending and offers reasonable, if unexciting, policy proposals to remedy the problem. Our homes, cars and even our watches are flashier than ever. But although the rich have the money to indulge their whims, the rest of us finance our spending sprees either by decreased personal savings or by increased debt: Frank reports that total household debt grew from 56% of disposable income in 1983 to an astonishing 81% by the beginning of 1995. Most economists accept that conspicuous consumption merely reflects Adam Smith's dictum that the sum of individuals seeking their own interest adds up to the greatest good for all. But Frank argues that our notions of self-interest are skewed, that all this getting and spending doesn't even make us happy (if your neighbor didn't buy the new Lexus, you wouldn't feel the need for the newer Beemer, and you'd both work less and spend more time with the kids). The problem, Frank believes, is that American society has a glut of individual incentives and a dearth of group incentives. To protect us from our greedier selves, Frank lobbies for a tax exemption for savings and a progressive consumption tax. If Americans spent less on luxury items, he writes, there would be more money available "to restore our long neglected public infrastructure and repair our tattered social safety net." Frank's diagnosis of American luxury fever is hard to dispute, but his remedies, sensible in the abstract, take insufficient account of the political and cultural obstacles that need to be overcome to implement them.

Buying this book is money well spent

This fascinating book describes how a new virus, the luxury fever has Americans seemingly inescapably in its grip: people spend a larger and larger proportion of our money on luxury goods. And, because for most people incomes have remained static or have even declined (in the US and the UK), this extra spending was financed by lower savings and higher debts, making the economy weaker and more vulnerable. Further, most people work longer and tend to spend less time on important activities such as vacations, being with family, sleeping exercising, etc. To make things worse: Americans spend less on vital public services which leads to a deteriorating infrastructure, to higher crime, to dirty streets and parks, to water pollution, to a deteriorating education system, etc. And what about health? 40 million Americans currently lack health insurance.... This book explains how there is a competition 1) between different forms of private spending (do we buy luxury or do we spend our money differently?) and 2) between private and public spending. To expand on the latter point: a growing share of the US national income is spent on consumption and spending on vital publics services is increasingly threatened. Frank explains (on the basis of well-being research and the adaptation-level theory) that the main reason we buy luxury goods is to demonstrate to others that we can afford to thereby trying to distinguish ourselves from them. In doing so we try to achieve happiness by improving our relative status. The irony is, however, this absolutely doesn't work! The satisfaction we get from luxury spending, which Frank calls conspicuous spending, depends largely on context. The satisfaction we get from luxury spending lasts only shortly. Two examples: 1) If we buy an expensive car, this distinguishes us from our neighbour and we feel happy. If, however, next month our neighbour buys an even fancier one, our satisfaction will be largely gone. You can see how this leads to an escalation, an arms race, with no winners. 2) The satisfaction we get from luxury goods tends to decline steeply over time. We tend to get used quickly to what we have and the favourable features of the luxury good tend to fade into the background rapidly: we no longer notice the fancy features of our expensive car and our satisfaction diminishes. Bottom line: this increasing conspicuous spending does more harm than good. We have to discourage conspicuous consumption in favour of inconspicuous consumption. Frank explains that no individual or family alone can solve this problem. It has to be solved at a higher level. He proposes a simple but effective measure to discourage conspicuous consumption, a progressive consumption tax levied on consumption rather than income. Frank claims this tax can stimulate radical changes in the ways we lead our lives. Contrary to the believe of many, he convincingly argues, this progressive consumption tax would not cripple the economy but invigorate it. A fascinating book also highly relevant for European countries I think.

An Interesting Diagnosis

Frank's point is essentially that Americans spend too much on luxury goods that don't bring them satisfaction, and too little on things they really could make them happier. He makes a good case for using a consumption tax to remedy the situation. I really enjoyed the analysis of homo economicus versus homo realisticus. Frank argues that homo economicus (as used in mainstream economics) is concerned with rational betterment of his situation, while real people are concerned as much or even more with doing better than those around them. When I studied economics I realized that something was wrong with the standard homo economicus model, but Frank lays out the differences very clearly, in ways I hadn't thought of.

Frank has some great commentary on the human condition here, too. My favorite is his analysis of why it helps to get up in the morning if you put your alarm clock out of reach of the bed. If you don't see what this has to do with economics--read the book!

Frank makes some proposals that I think are bluntly naive. For example, he proposes curing unemployment by a program of public works. This simply cannot work. It has, of course, been tried, including the attempt by the Washington DC municipal government in recent decades. Inevitably it leads to dependency and corruption, and a multiplication of the number of people needing public jobs. Frank needs to think more about where the incentives are in such a situation. In my opinion, if the streets are littered with garbage that isn't being picked up, you have to look at where the garbage is coming from and who is benefitting from creating it. It should be sellers of plastic bottles, paper cups, and the like who should be paying for picking up litter from the streets, not general tax funds. Frank also needs to pay more attention to population issues. No public works program can support a continually increasing number of people. I think Frank also overlooks the large role in overconsumption of having no limits on the interest rates which credit card and mortgage companies are allowed to charge. Unlimited rates means that such companies have a vested interest in keeping the maximum possible number of Americans on the edge of bankruptcy, and not much of an interest in making sure they lend money only to people who are likely to be able to pay it back.

Overall, though, this is a book with some useful and interesting ideas.

About 100 years after Veblen coined the phrase, "conspicuous consumption," Frank finds himself trying to make sense of outrageous consumption patterns during another era of prosperity. Why the love for expensive grills, cars and watches? The answer, in brief, is status. Because social status is measured relative to others (rather than by absolute standards), consumers step on a treadmill that finds them trying to outmeasure their peers. This treadmill doesn't lead to any greater happiness. Though individual satisfaction tends to increase with greater income and greater income slightly associates with higher satisfaction in the U.S., the elevations in per capita income within countries over time don't correspond with greater satisfaction (above some threshold). We have more stuff than our grandparents but not more satisfaction because of it. Pointing out that society as a whole would be better served by reallocating the resources wasted on individual luxury items by investing in clean air and water, paying teachers and maintaining roads, Frank shows that this conflict between individual and group interests represents a public goods problem. Though legal restrictions, social norms and other mechanisms have been advanced to solve these dilemmas elsewhere, Frank favors a progressive consmption tax for the U.S. This contention muddies the water between advocacy and the science of economics. In his support of it, as elsewhere in the book, he overgeneralizes from a few lines of evidence ("all evidence shows that...") to broad conclusions, leaving the reader questioning how completely the relevant evidence has been reviewed. Yet the clarity, readability and timeliness of this book make it well worth reading. Will it help us get off the status treadmill?

This book is primarily designed as a textbook for a "transition" college course (the kind of course at the sophomore level that helps students make the transition from calculus and calculation intensive courses to more abstract mathematics), and it does an excellent job. While the structure of the book is quite standard for a text of this kind, students find it accessible and user-friendly. To achieve the goal of helping students grow comfortable with abstract mathematical structures, Dr. Diane Driscoll Schwartz presents at first an introduction to logic and its use in the construction of mathematical proofs. The topics included in the two chapters cover several standard proof techniques, such as the use of the contrapositive and of the principle of mathematical induction. This part is followed by the discussion of a number of mathematical topics such as sets, functions, relations, groups, modular arithmetic, combinatorics and cardinality. While the sets of exercises include a sufficient number of problems, it would be nice to see this number increased. Some of the problems are designed for group-work and provide a good starting point for classroom discussion and for "non standard" homework assignments. The book is accompanied by an Instructor's Guide, which includes suggestions for class preparation and hints for some of the problems. For those schools that provide a technology-intensive environment, the text can be use with the computer language ISETL. The software can be downloaded from the Web Sites indicated in the book.

Steven spent more than two decades in corporate leadership roles in industries as diverse as wholesale industrial products, intimate apparel, medical products, communications, and software & technology. Further, he spent twelve years as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University’s business school.

This has been a great book and refresher

This has been a great book and refresher. I have been a Product Manager for several years and use this book a lot for ideas on how to improve processes. I would recommend this book and the training Steven Haines company offiers.

Great book, good templates for documents and comprehensive in scope for product development. Works well for software development life cycle. Definitely leans towards waterfall development but seems appropriate to add structure to agile/scrum based product development.

Excellent resource to understand what an actual Product Manager does ...

Excellent resource to understand what an actual Product Manager does in a typical day. The best way to use it is to read it from beginning to ending while complimenting certain parts of the book with certain other books for example read "What Customers Want" by Anthony Ulwick while reading about interviewing techniques and product requirement analysis.
