After being laid off from his job at a prestigious consulting firm, Dean decides to embark on a journey across East Africa with his younger brother. Unknowingly, they travel into bandit territory where a medical emergency forces them to choose between their safety and their health.

Inspired by true events, The Watermelon King follows the journey of two brothers as they backpack across one of East Africa’s most inhospitable regions. As they endure endless days of difficult travel, a series of short stories written by their father begins to uncover their inherent desire for adventure and their connection to the past. Along the way they begin to understand the beauty and frustration of life in Africa.

From the Author
The Watermelon King is as much about backpacking across Africa as it is about rural North Dakota in the late 20th century. The story draws parallels between the experiences of different generations and shows how the actions of one person can affect the actions of another.

Though most of the story takes place in isolated corners of East Africa, The Watermelon King highlights a forgotten period of rural American life and shows how it can still be pertinent today.

About the Author
Daniel Royse is the founder and editor in chief of the online travel publication, This Boundless World.  He has written numerous articles on travel, business and politics. The Watermelon King is his first full-length novel.

Daniel is an obsessive writer and explorer who has backpacked to over 50 countries, spanning five continents. To the disbelief of many, he still enjoys long, hot bus rides through chaotic places.

The Watermelon King
By SuzyBakeOven
I actually picked this book up from the actual Royse's Produce in Mandan, ND. It's a fruit and veggie store and has been around for over 50 years and the grandfather was well known for his adventures. So, I was pretty interested to find that his grandson wrote a book about it.

In summary, after losing his job, his character Dean decides to once again give in to his wanderlust and travel through East Africa, specifically to Ethiopia, right to the place where the first human (named Lucy) was found. I enjoyed the stories of the people he met and the perspectives of those people. Throughout the book, he is almost mystically led by his grandfather who comes through via Dean's father's letters. I liked the unexpected and almost otherworldly guidance here. Life was very interesting for his quirky grandfather, but life is interesting for Dean too. They obviously have the same adventurous spirit, but it is carried out in very different ways for the both of them.

There are other lessons to be learned (always bring emergency antibiotics when traveling through Ethiopia), but by and large this heartfelt read, and great for the anyone who has been bitten by the travel bug. I really hope to get the chance to travel like this myself at some point in my life. But if not, this was a great way to live vicariously.

One good read.
By Keith L Mund
OK, so I know one of the family members, grew up in the area, and stopped by the Watermelon Kingdom many more times than I could possibly guess.

This book is a bit of autobiography, biography, and adventure story scrambled into one batch of eggs in Kenya--and it is probably as rare a find. It provides an easy and entertaining evening--or plane ride in my case.

I liken it to an indie movie. You don't often have any idea what you are getting into, but more often than not you are rewarded with a view of humanity that reminds you what life is.

Two unlikely worlds collide in this memoir
By Andrea Coventry
I am always intrigued by stories of other people's adventures abroad. I am in awe of their ability to survive in harsh climates with nothing more than the packs on their back. Stories about Africa seem to intrigue me the most. I know that it is a very beautiful continent, and I know that there is still a lot of ugliness there. At the beginning of this book, Daniel promises to just tell it like it is, the good, the bad, and the ugly, and he did.

The majority of the story in Africa tells of the brothers' journey from Ethiopia to Kenya. I can perfectly picture the various modes of transportation, the "hotel" rooms, the busy streets, and the potential hostile encounters that he describes. I cannot imagine trying to travel that way, and yet am curious about seeing it for myself.

This story about Africa is the framework of the story. Just as Africa runs on its own meandering time, so does this story about their African adventure. In fact, I found myself wanting more from that part of the story. I want to know more of their experiences, though I know the purpose of the story was to tell of their travels south and to share their father's writings.

Their father's stories about his own father, known as The Watermelon King, were extremely interesting and amusing. The man sounds like a real trip and someone I would have enjoyed meeting. You can tell that someone else wrote these stories, as the voice definitely changes. They are interspersed throughout the African adventure, supposedly shared at each point where Daniel actually read them along the way.

Throughout much of the book, it was hard to see why these two stories were interwoven, other than Daniel was reading them to help pass time while traveling in Africa. At the same time, you can see that he is learning more about himself and his heritage as he reads these stories, sort of how he and his brother are finding out more about themselves and each other as they travel through Africa. It isn't some deep and profound realization that shatters their world and turns it inside out like in those big novels that were turned into movies. This one felt a bit more realistic. And again, they were entertaining.

It is not a typical memoir and I am ashamed to say that I am struggling to put my finger on just what made it so different. These two worlds being described are so different. You wonder why they are together, and yet, it makes perfect sense. I am glad I had the opportunity to read it and hope that Daniel shares more of his adventure stories with us.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Review
"Reframing Academic Leadership is the most comprehensive book on the topic and an excellent source of knowledge for faculty and managerial leaders in every college and university. Bolman and Gallos effectively combine the principles and practices of effective leadership with many rich examples and stories of leadership in practice. An invaluable resource for students of higher education leadership!"
—Maureen Sullivan, professor of practice, Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and 2010 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Librarian of the Year

"Reframing Academic Leadership provides a compassionate understanding of the stresses of serving in a leadership capacity in higher education. It is an excellent book for those already serving as administrators in colleges and universities and for those who aspire to these positions. It offers insights to those who do not fully appreciate why higher education is so hard to ‘manage’ and validation for those entirely familiar with this world. I recommend it enthusiastically to both audiences as an excellent blend of theoretical ideas and practical applications."
—Judith Block McLaughlin, senior lecturer on education, director of the Higher Education Program, and educational chair for the Harvard Seminar for New Presidents, Harvard Graduate School of Education

"In Reframing Academic Leadership, Bolman and Gallos provide a refreshing view of leadership essential for those who are assuming presidencies and other important leadership positions in higher education as well as those who bring more conceptual and practical experiences. No sooner had I read their work when their notion of thinking outside the box and elevating the level of discussion through ‘reframing’ was most useful in resolving a board-related issue that I was facing in my first year as president of my institution. This work by Bolman and Gallos is a bedside reference for aspiring and current leaders in higher education not only in the U.S. but also abroad."
—Fernando Leon Garcia, rector, Sistema CETYS Universidad, Baja California, Mexico

"Too often, higher education administrators understand neither the organizations they lead, nor the theories that provide them with knowledge they can apply to this complex task. Bolman and Gallos have written a practical, lucid text that brings together illustrative vignettes and robust frameworks for diagnosing and managing colleges and universities. I recommend this book to new and experienced higher education administrators who will routinely confront difficult people, structures, and cultures in their workplaces."
—Christopher Morphew, professor and chair, Educational Policy and Leadership Studies, College of Education, University of Iowa

"Reframing Academic Leadership is a gem, filled with examples from days leaders really have. So much of what the authors espouse is musical: the book reads like an effective guide for leading a chamber music rehearsal, where one’s role constantly shifts from star to servant and where multiple answers may be 'right.' Very cool."
—Peter Witte, dean, Conservatory of Music and Dance, University of Missouri-Kansas City

From the Author
Our approach in writing this book builds from multiple sources.  One is our experience both working in and teaching higher education leadership for more years than either of us likes to acknowledge.  One or both of us have served as a tenured senior faculty member, alumni affairs officer, principal investigator, academic program director, campus accreditation coordinator, department chair, dean, and special assistant to a university president.  We have studied, lived, and worked in elite private and urban public institutions. We have years of experience teaching higher education leadership to aspiring professionals in graduate courses and to experienced administrators in executive programs and summer institutes. We hope this book reflects all that we have learned from our students, colleagues, and experiences.

Throughout the book are cases and examples drawn from our own experiences and from the experience of the many thousands of academic leaders with whom we have worked over the years.  Except for a few clearly-labeled public examples, the cases are composites created, like good teaching cases, to illustrate dynamics regularly seen across institutions and situations. You're likely to encounter more than one example that sounds a lot like something that happened at your institution not so long ago. In higher education, it can truly be said, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun."

From the Inside Flap
"Colleges and universities constitute a special type of organization; and their complex mission, dynamics, personnel structures, and values require a distinct set of understandings and skills to lead and manage them well." --from the Preface
In Reframing Academic Leadership, Lee G. Bolman and Joan V. Gallos offer higher education leaders a provocative and pragmatic guide for

  • Crafting dynamic institutions where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts
  • Creating campus environments that facilitate creativity and commitment
  • Forging alliances and partnerships in service of the mission
  • Building shared vision and campus cultures that unite and inspire
  • Serving the larger goals of the academy and society
Throughout the book, the authors integrate powerful conceptual frameworks with rich and compelling real-world cases to support academic leaders searching for the best in themselves and in their institutions. The book tackles thorny issues such as building institutional clarity and capacity, managing conflict, coping with difficult people, partnering with the boss, and developing leadership resilience.
Following in the tradition of Bolman and Deal's classic Reframing Organizations, Bolman and Gallos emphasize a pragmatic approach. They tease out the unique challenges and opportunities in academic leadership and provide ideas, tools, and encouragement to help higher education leaders see more clearly, feel more confident, and become more skilled and versatile in handling the vicissitudes of daily life. Reframing Academic Leadership is the resource for those seeking to understand, develop, and manage colleges and universities.

Excellent companion to Reframing Organizations
By Tintin
This book takes the same four-frame schema as Boleman and Deal's well know Reframing Organizations, but specifically in the context of higher education. The first few chapters do seemed like a rehash of the other: structural, political, and so on ... but then the examples became infused with something that is very unique to academia. That is the rift that often develops between faculty and administration. "Faculty can see staff as unduly constrained and bureaucratic," they explain. "Staff often wonder why they have to track their hours and vacation days when faculty seem to come and go as they please."

Working within a discipline or - more often - sub-discipline is not very amenable to hierarchical control. The focus for faculty is within their specific areas - a "silo" mentality. It's not easy for faculty members to see or appreciate the complex institutional machinery required to assemble groups of inquisitive youth in rooms, on schedule, like clockwork, year after year, in a fluid and unstable environment. Meanwhile, academic administrators (unlike those running a factory or grocery store), cannot understand what actually happens at the other end of the hierarchy. They simply do not have the expertise. There's a built-in volatility which is difficult to control.

The popular Boleman/Deal book, now it its fourth edition and widely used as a text in management and leadership classes, only went so far as to compare universities to hospitals. That's an interesting thought - doctors there are the counterpart to faculty members here.

But they go much farther in this book. Faculty members' reference group, for example, may not include the administration or staff, colleagues in other departments, or even colleagues in their own area. They may, instead, be aligned intellectually with likeminded specialists in other institutions, institutions which are (from the business model) competitors. The culture, goals, outlook, perspective, motivation, and knowledge base of Professor Jones may be worlds apart from that of Dean Simon or Provost Peters. And although they may distrust one another, and even fight, they also pull in the same direction. Such is life in academia.

The audience for this book is probably small not only because this is specific to academia but because it will be of more value to administrators than to faculty. Faculty can often all but ignore the broad institutional view of the administration. But they shouldn't, of course. Faculty will find the book interesting, and will like to read that they are of primary importance. The first law of higher education leadership, the authors write, is "If you lose the faculty, you lose." And yet, they also discuss the "pervasive faculty scorn for bureaucracy, administrators, and hierarchy."

The same three threads are wound again through academia: political, structural, human resources ... to great effect. As before (in Boleman/Deal) an effort is made on account of symbolism too, which fell short again, I thought. Yes there is no denying the symbolic power of Arizona State University President Michael Crow's 2002 inaugural address, reprinted in part, in which he describes "A new gold standard" of higher education. The speech was moving, inspirational, and effective because it presented a vision; yes, a vision which involved people, politics, and structure. It wasn't the symbols that were so valuable in themselves, it was that they were an effective mode of communication. If symbology is an entire frame of academic leadership, so is shouting. If there was anything symbolic that needs a little explaining, it may be the stark difference in dress code between faculty and administration. If communication and interaction is so important between these groups, I understand the jeans and and sneakers on faculty -- they're comfortable, and that's also what students wear. Not that I think they're so bad in themselves, what's with the suits and ties. Probably, administrators must communicate with politicians, businessmen, legislators, donors, and others who will appreciate the formality. But it does affect the faculty-administration dynamic and it's an issue that may be worth taking up in the next edition.

Despite that shortcoming, and a couple of chapters at the end that refer vaguely to "feeding the soul" and the "sacred nature of academic leadership," the insights keep coming, chapter by chapter: Transparency and secrecy, reward structures, recruiting and hiring, managing budgets and personnel, review, accountability, motivation, cross-disciplinary cooperation, communication, self-control, autonomy, accountability, conflict resolution, assessment, regulations and guidelines - these are all addressed. Anyone involved in higher education will be thankful for this illuminating book.

A bit too much of a good thing
By Alan Broomhead
Reframing Academic Leadership is chock full of good ideas about leading in an academic environment. The authors base the idea of reframing on the notion that the academic environment presents very particular leadership challenges. Power is dispersed through the the institution, and it is difficult for any single person to control anything. Faculty play a role in governance, and administrators find themselves caught in the middle of the often conflicting interests of faculty, students, and other administrators. Leaders are under pressure to initiate change and adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. In this environment, leaders may fail in one (or both) of the following ways: they fail to notice cues in their environment that should act as guideposts, and try move things in the wrong direction; and they fail to carry their people with them. Reframing is a habit of strong academic leaders. It means looking at a situation from multiple perspectives, understanding it in new ways, and developing new strategies for moving ahead.

This is a challenge, say Bolman and Gallos, because while administrators new to an institution "step midstream into institutions that have evolved distinctive histories, cultures, and traditions," (p. 18) they tend to frame situations to fit familiar patterns. Under pressure to initiate change, "they are off and running before they're even sure what's most important and where they should really be heading" (p. 19). They may exhibit skilled incompetence, which is akin to expertly hitting everything with a hammer - not the solution to most problems. And they find themselves in the difficult position of working astride an 'internal world' of faculty, collegial culture, and academic freedom, and an 'external world' of senior administrators, managerial culture, and the values of efficiency and accountability.

The authors provide plenty of good advice for coping with all this, which doesn't really add up to a coherent approach, but which makes the book useful to dip into or refer back to, whether for specific quotes or more elaborated models. For example, here is one way to preempt what may turn into a difficult conversation: "George, let me tell you what I dread. If I raise questions about your work, you'll get angry and the meeting will go downhill. Should I be worried about that?" (p. 38) More conceptually, their Advocacy/Inquiry communication model provides useful insights into how to make a conversation go well, and to analyze how a conversation may have gone wrong.

Further on, they tackle the question of how the institution can become ineffective through an organizational structure that keeps producing one thing when what is needed is another. As long as A is being rewarded, it will be difficult to produce B. They illustrate how administrators may be authorized to act, but may lack the expertise of the faculty they oversee, resulting in a weak authority system. And academic units in an institution can become isolated from each other, resulting in silos that do not work or play well together. To these kinds of problems, they offer numerous solutions appropriate to the academic environment, one of the most useful of which is the importance of respecting the process that faculty have come to expect when attempting to implement change.

The book tends to become rather generic and formulaic as it progresses, offering a bit of a mishmash of rather cliched leadership advice, under headings such as open communication, empowerment, and teamwork. Similarly, the various leadership metaphors offered chapter by chapter - "Analyst and Architect," "Compassionate Politician," "Servant, Catalyst, and Coach" (all three at once?) is overwhelming. Each of these ideas really deserves much more space, but the format of the book is to take the reader through them at a swift pace; there is little time or space to process. Perhaps a companion workbook would help. Overall, I don't think the authors do an effective job of connecting the concept of reframing to the challenges they describe.

Still, I took away a lot from Reframing Academic Leadership, and recommend it as an ideas book for any administrator looking for solutions in a hurry.

One of the best books in higher ed
By P. Sendall
I read this as part of my ACE Fellowship. Of the volumes of reading that was required, this book, by far was the best read of them all. It's incredibly logical, really speaks to the state of higher ed today and how to navigate it. Very well written and easy to read. I think I need to re-visit it!

UnDivided (Unwind Dystology), by Neal Shusterman

Teens control the fate of America in the fourth and final book in the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology by Neal Shusterman that Horn Book Magazine calls “ambitious, insightful, and devastating—a fitting conclusion to a provocative series.”

Proactive Citizenry, the company that created Cam from the parts of unwound teens, has a plan: to mass produce rewound teens like Cam for military purposes. And below the surface of that horror lies another shocking level of intrigue: Proactive Citizenry has been suppressing technology that could make unwinding completely unnecessary. As Conner, Risa, and Lev uncover these startling secrets, enraged teens begin to march on Washington to demand justice and a better future.

But more trouble is brewing. Starkey’s group of storked teens is growing more powerful and militant with each new recruit. And if they have their way, they’ll burn the harvest camps to the ground and put every adult in them before a firing squad—which could destroy any chance America has for a peaceful future.

“Everything culminates in an action-packed, heart-wrenching conclusion guaranteed to chill readers to the bone” (Kirkus Reviews).

Gr 9 Up—In the final book of the "Unwind Dystology," everything comes full circle. Shusterman expertly reminds readers about the characters and their current situations without distracting from the current plot. Teens gain information on all of the key players, and each well-crafted narrative moves at a refreshing pace. Connor and Risa are together again in Sonia's house, with Grace in tow. They have found a way to change people's minds about unwinding by providing other options. Lev is on the reservation but cannot contain his need to fight for what he feels is right. Cam is back with Roberta, and though they try to affect his thoughts and memories, they cannot suppress his genuine contempt for Proactive Citizenry and his creators. Starkey and his storks, on the other hand, are leading a revolt that only makes things worse for the unwinds. Characters old and new are integrated into the story line, providing insight and closure. Shusterman generates a lot of thought-provoking topics for discussion. The story is intriguing: a wonderful end to a unique and noteworthy series.—Kristyn Dorfman, The Packer Collegiate Institute, Brooklyn, NY

Review
"Shusterman's finale might be the best one in the series since the first...Everything culminates in an action-packed, heart-wrenching conclusion guaranteed to chill readers to the bone." (Kirkus Reviews)

"The battle for hearts and minds--and teenage body parts--winds to a dramatic close in the finale to Shusterman's darkly satiric UnWind Dystology...true page-turner like the previous books." (Booklist)

"Real recent news articles (with working links) about the present-day scientific and policy realities presaging Shusterman’s imagined future punctuate the narrative...Ambitious, insightful, and devastating—a fitting conclusion to a provocative series." (Horn Book Magazine)

"[A] lot of thought-provoking topics for discussion. The story is intriguing: a wonderful end to a unique and noteworthy series." (School Library Journal)

*"The popularity of this series is warranted: it is smart, it is dark, it is riveting, and the characters are drawn with respect. Furthermore, Shusterman’s series transcends the dystopian fan base. Libraries without books one through three should get them. Those who already have them, start the waiting list now." (VOYA, starred review)

5 Nice Socks Stars. Best YA Dystopian Series I've Ever Read!!!
By Robin Snyder
Overall Series 4.5 “Nice Socks” Stars

Unwind 5 Stars
Unwholly 4.5 Stars
Unsouled 4 Stars

Undivided 5 Stars

I thought, I couldn’t be shocked anymore….
I thought, nothing Neal Shusterman says or does will surprise me now…
I thought, there was nothing more horrible than the things I’ve already seen in this series...
I thought, I knew who to hate and who to love in the story….
I thought, I was prepared….
I was wrong. So…so…wrong

-- “Tools are neither demonic nor divine. It’s all about who wields them.”

I’ve been severely disappointed with dystopian novels lately. They all seem to start out strong and then just dwindle or they are exactly the same as everything else out there Aligent, Requiem. However, the Unwind series is a true sparkling diamond in a sea of cubic zirconia. Neal Shusterman lines up all the pieces in the story, sets the tumblers in motion and much like a game of Plinko I had no idea where the pieces would finally come to rest. Undivided is an AMAZING wrap up to the Unwind series. This is the series you recommend first when someone asks if you know of any good Dystopian or YA novels.

Just like the other books in the series it is told in the multiple PoV fashion mostly from the viewpoints of Connor, Risa, Lev and Cam but also there are others from Hayden, Argent, Una , Starkey and more peppered in. It is amazing the full scope of the story you feel you are getting from seeing it from all of these perspectives. The villains are so powerfully portrayed, I really felt like I understood their motives and some of their craziness.

-- Starkey believes he is invincible. He believes he is more than just destined for greatness, but that greatness is owed to him, and every one of these “victories” makes him believe it more and more. The Stork Lord. Hayden’s epithet is more on-target then even he realizes, for Starkey truly does see himself as royalty reaching for divinity. A chosen one with the pride and privilege of a god.

The heroes are portrayed equally as honestly with all of their attributes and faults on display as well. No one is perfect but everyone is trying to do the best they can with what they have.

Conner is not the same troubled boy he was in Unwind. He has really grown up over that last two years of running. He is easy to like and I am so happy that he and Risa were finally together again for the majority of this book. The love story between them is truly fantastic, well developed and beautiful. There has been no insta love here.

There are a lot of really horrible disturbing moments in this book, but they are written in such a way that while yes, they are still disturbing I couldn’t help but read on, enthralled by the story. There are also as many truly touching heartfelt moments. I teared up more than once with the emotion of those moments. Even characters I thought I could not feel any sympathy toward somehow were able to elicit very confused feeling from me. I hated them but the events of a few situations really made me feel all the more sorry for them.

A revolution is building but for change to happen a bunch of things will all need to fall into place at the same time. So many issues on the ballot for the election that have to do with unwinding and Proactive Citezenry are ramping up their propaganda campaigns. This is one of the things I really like about these novels, the way that advertising is used to show how different organizations are really promoting the same ideas and really all working for the same organization even though they seem to be promoting different things. It is incredibly smart.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY MEASURE F!
Supporters of the so-called Prevention Initiative claim that it’s all about the protection of at-risk children—but read the fine print! Measure F allows the Juvenile Authority to identify and track incorrigible children for the purpose of unwinding them as soon as they turn thirteen—which will be legal once the Parental Override bill becomes law. Measure G, on the other hand, funds the Juvenile Authority by giving cash incentives for the capture of AWOLs—who have already proven themselves to be menaces to society. No on F! Yes on G! Make the sensible choice!

At the beginning of every section there are also references to actual stories from today that if taken just a little farther to a slight extreme could lead down this road. It is amazing to think that some of the stuff in the book is not that far from reality. There are also some radio broadcasts being put out by Hayden trying to ramp up support. He is slowly exposing Proactive Citizenry and the Juvenile Authority for the monsters they really are a little at a time in hopes that the people will have had enough and join in a single voice.

-- “Y’know, if I wanted to make sure that the Juvenile Authority had greater and greater support, I would trick angry teenagers into blowing themselves up, and then blame the angry teenagers! No mess, no bother. Well, quite a lot of mess, but you get my point.

All the little touches of the radio broadcasts, advertisements and articles from today and part of what makes this story so special and gives it just that little extra something.

The story ties comes together so well and I really sat on the edge of my seat near the end so worried for all of the characters I love. There are some happy endings, there are some endings and there are some new beginnings.

Our heroes Connor, Risa, Lev and Cam will all go to some extraordinary lengths so that no other troubled teen, ward of the state or tithe will ever suffer the fate of running from the law and the threat of being unwound. One of them will risk everything they are just for that hope. I’m sad to leave all these characters behind but I know that this is one of those storied that will stick with me and I will read time and time again throughout my life and get something different from it each time.

I don’t read much YA anymore but books like these are why I still bother to read this genre at all. It is the journey that you want to see in a YA novel, but rarely get. The series is complete so no time like the present to jump in.

This is a book that stays with you.

Unwind is the book that I recommend more than any other. It's hard to sell it as a "good book" because the subject matter is too dark and twisted to explain. It's not a fun ride, it doesn't have a happy ending. But it is impossible to sear from your brain. UnDivided is a worthy finale.

I thought I was prepared for the final chapter. I didn't particularly care for the third book in the series, which I thought telegraphed the end-game too heavily, and didn't advance the plot much. I was wrong. Shusterman surprised me, because UnDivided takes our characters on a far worse journey than I could have imagined.

This book contains more horror than all three of the previous books combined. Shusterman takes risks here, and they pay off. The events of this book, the actions the characters take, made me squirmingly uncomfortable, but there is a deep, heartbreakingly poetic rightness to them.

A Perfect 'wind-up' for the Dystology
By Kate Brennan
And this is why young adult is the most subversive book genre.

Undivided is a brilliant and satisfying culmination of the struggles of Connor, Risa, Lev and Cam, full of four-books' worth of threads woven intricately together. I will not divulge any spoilers here, but I will say that the book managed to make me swallow the bile rising in my throat on more than one occasion. Mary Shelley would be proud. I was alternately horrified for, cheering on, panicking with and surprised by our sundry heroes. (And when this book is inevitably made into a film, quite frankly, I don't think I'll be able to stomach watching it.)

And I'll say it again. Why isn't this series trumping Hunger Games and Divergent? - Or is it and I'm just out of the loop? Actually, it's the most plausible dystopian scenario of the three. Which is possibly why we'd like to keep it safely buried just out of sight.

When it comes down to it, I can't help but think that the entire Unwind series is about failure. Our failure to our youth. And maybe we aren't unwinding them just yet, but we are cutting school funding, and in my home city, closing schools by the dozens. We do shut down their libraries and rec centers so much so that flash mobs - and I don't mean the dancing kind - broke out in Philly in the multitudes. We are medicating them with everything from anti-depressants to stimulants to good old-fashioned sugar and TV.

Sometimes I look at our education system in America like some characters look at unwinding, and think, What have we done?

But in the real world we've not only abandoned our role as steward to the younger generation, we've greedily taken on the role of playing God. (Isn't it amazing how far Mary Shelley was ahead of her time?) Don't science and technology now fly at the speed of light? And I wonder if we ever ask, "should we" before we ask "how can we...?"

And beyond that, how parsed are we these days? How willing are we to sell our parts to the highest bidder? How much do we blindly subscribe to the agendas of the conglomerates? As I asked my friend on 14th st. the other day, "where is our moral compass?"

So while the whole `dismemberment of teenagers for corporate gain' thing is pretty terrifying, what's far more terrifying is that this series is frighteningly plausible in our socio-economic-politically-corrupt-media-driven-shame-inducing-fear-mongering climate. And that, my friend, is a whole other matter.
