Fresh approach to learning glyphs, great reference book

Dr. Toth's book is a new, fresh approach to learning hieroglyphs. Each chapter addresses a different grammatical point. However instead of lengthy discussions of the grammar followed by one or two examples, Dr. Toth uses multiple examples and a limited discussion of the grammar. This approach to me was easier and more straight forward than the other methods.It also helps to build one's vocabulary. Each chapter included a monument or artifact and its translation. This is a good way to check one's progress and see the grammar points in context. I have used other grammar guides. Dr. Toth's book will now be my permanent reference guide. I highly recommend the book for glyph beginners and more advanced students who want a good reference guide and interesting artifacts to study and translate.

An Absolutely Brilliant Method to Learning Egyptian Grammar--Naturally and Cotextually Through Literature

As an advanced scholar of Egyptian hieroglyphs, I have found Dr. Toth's book Introduction to Middle Egyptian Grammar Through Ancient Writings to be both extremely helpful and a fantastic resource for my studies. Although this grammar book is written with the beginning scholar of Egyptian hieroglyphs in mind, it has proved for me to be a valuable aid in both further advancing my learning of the language and perfecting my translations. From cover to cover, the materials presented in this grammar occurs at a natural pace and is organized in such a way that previous lessons learned are constantly reinforced throughout the book and future lessons are introduced gently and with detailed relevance to what was previously presented.

Where this grammar particularly shines is in its emphasis on learning the language through many complete artifacts, museum pieces, stelae, papyri, etc. While other modern Middle Egyptian grammar books mostly use one or two sentence examples from a plethora of sources, Dr. Toth's presentation of the grammar through the analyses of these complete artifacts guide the reader to both learn the language through the complete context in which the text was written and to introduce the reader as to how Egyptologists and grammarians would research a piece of hieroglyphic text. Also as an ancient language which many modern Egyptologists and linguists still debate grammatical concepts and translations, Dr. Toth pays special attention to those sentences which have ambiguous meanings and explains why and how different translations are acceptable. Lastly, Dr. Toth's website to supplement the book is an incredible aid containing more "texts in context" artifacts that are analyzed with the same care and detail as in the book.

I highly recommend this book for all those who are interested in learning Middle Egyptian hieroglyphs. Whether you wish to learn a few grammatical concepts to impress family and friends of your translation skills at museums or are a serious student who wishes to dig deeper into the smallest grammatical details (as I am), then Introduction to Middle Egyptian Grammar Through Ancient Writings is the grammar book you should absolutely have for your bookshelf and classroom.

An Invaluable Asset for Learning the Ancient Egyptian Language

Gabor Toth's Introduction to Middle Egyptian Grammar through Ancient Writings is an invaluable asset to future Egyptologists and enthusiasts. Toth elegantly guides the readers through the beautiful ancient Egyptian language from ideograms and determinatives to full sentences with numerous examples of text from different artifacts. I highly suggest that this book become the standard textbook for all Egyptian hieroglyphs classes. I was lucky enough to be one of the first of his students to utilize this book upon its release; while I am nowhere near an expert with this language (it is very complex), I now have an extremely strong foundation, which I can apply immediately to further my new language skill set, thanks to Toth and his new book. Fantastic Survey of Key Studies

This book is so useful! It succinctly and clearly summarizes the most significant clinical trials in medicine. It's well-written, easy to navigate, and very compelling. It's indispensable to any student of medicine. It would also be a fascinating read to anyone interested in how clinical trials provide the foundation for modern internal medicine. It makes you go "Hmmm..."

This is an interesting and easy-to-read narrative for the beginner history fan of Ancient Rome's military tactics and battles during the Punic Wars. Robert O'Connell presents an introduction to Rome's early Republic years before delving into the Second Punic War. Ancient Roman historians such as Polybius and Livy are often quoted (not that historians have a lot to go on, either) but credit must go to O'Connell for also wanting to present the Carthaginian point of view, of which many pages are dedicated. He uses his own vast knowledge to add his analysis of why certain tactics failed and others were successful.

History is written by the victors and the losers just fade away. The curious reader will want to understand why Hannibal and his followers took the route they did, why they wanted to attack Rome where they did, and why it all mattered. This is a book not just about Hannibal, but about Hasdrubal, Scipio Africanus and Quintus Fabius Maximus. Maps are included to show the progress made by Hannibal from Spain to Italy. What should have been a vicotry for Hannibal turned out to be a deafening defeat, and O'Connell goes into impressive analysis of why Hannibal's strategy failed. Although I can't verify all facts in this book, this is an easy-to-read and inquisitive narrative of the Second Punic Wars and the aftermath. A non-military-trained historian would be able to understand O'Connell's work.

I just finished a semester of Ancient History and found this book perfect for some citations on the Roman Republic. I enjoyed this book. It is not too heavy into military tactics, nor is it too scholarly for everyman's history fan. But the author also asks the "How" and "Why" of the strategies used by the commanders and why they all failed.

Perhaps more scholared readers may find this book repetitive or perhaps long in the introduction as the Second Punic War and Hannibal's crossing of the Rhone don't happen until half-way into this book, however for someone who just enjoys a good historical read, this book is ideal. Robert O'Connell clearly has a passion for military history and the Ancient Romans. If you want to know more about the Second Punic War and read some analysis, this book is perfect.

There are two extremes when reviewing pre-release books. One of them is a book that is so boring that you find yourself not finishing it before the release date exemplified by [ASIN:0345505352 Never Tell Our Business to Strangers: A Memoir]]. The other extreme is exemplified by The Ghosts of Cannae a book SO good that I finished it in two days and put it down wanting more.

This book examines Rome and Carthage, a bit of history of the first Punic war, some excellent coverage of Hannibal and the battle itself, and the subject of the title. The "Ghosts" of Cannae, namely the Roman survivors who were given short shift by the republic..

He does all of this in a prose stile that really works, he turns a phrase with the best of them and approaches the problems with the surviving accounts of both the battle and ancient history without disrespecting them.

He spends a fair amount of time talking about the effects of the battle and how it shaped all the various parties. His suggestion connecting the battle with the eventual fall of the republic is an interesting proposition.

His epilogue about how Cannae has become a fixation of some modern soldiers was the only weakness, not because it is bad but because I wanted more of it. The worst part of this book is the fact that it ended.

I can't recommend this volume enough, buy it.

Would give it 3 1/2 stars if rating system was set up to allow it.

So read the 3 as 3 1/2. Would give it four if it gave slightly more in-depth coverage of the field of study it has become a classic text for students of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Well written and easy to read. Could even be a 5 star if written with just a little more spark and depth of coverage as earlier stated. I recommend it, but don't expect it to be another On The Origin of Species, or Silent Spring. Still, a very valuable contribution to the field when first published and remains so in it's 6th edition.

A good alternative to larger Ecology texts

I used the earlier edition of this book twice for an ecology course that I teach, and my students appreciated the length, price, readability, and content. The rating that I give the book (four stars) is mostly based on their satisfaction. This updated version is very similar to the fifth edition, but has some nice additions, such as a chapter on Phylogeny that mentions Felsenstein's independent contrasts methods. If you are interested in reviewing this book as a possible book for your course, I would first read this brief chapter on phylogeny (16) to get a feel for the brevity of all the topics in ecology that are covered. Because many details are left out (as are many important references), this book cannot be used without supplemental literature. I usually require readings of at least 5 additional papers per chapter in this book. In fact, without supplemental readings and additional material presented in lecture, I would probably only grant two stars to this book. Strengths of the book include: very easy to read, excellent figures, adequate treatment of mathematical models, logical organization, and some nice examples from the literature.
