Nothing Ground Breaking Here

Heard Mr. Maloney intervierwed on "Coast to Coast" a while back, finally got around to buying his book. While I think Mr. Maloney did a credible job of chronicling a good number of UFO cases related to war-time situations, I think the average reader of UFO books will be quite familiar with the events described. Additionally the majority of the incidents covered in the book are done only at a very top level, in an almost conversational style with only limited documentation and detail. If you are looking for in-depth analysis of any of the sightings covered in the book, "UFOs in Wartime" in not your answer. Not saying this is a bad book, far from it in fact, just pointing out serious students of ufology may find it a bit basic. For what it is, it's good, especially for the price.

I do have one major complaint. Both the front and back covers of the book promise it "Includes Incredible Photographs of UFO Sightings". This is absolutely not the case. Of the eight pages of photos, there isn't a single photo of a UFO, unless you count a poor quality reproduction of a page from the "LA Times" showing the oft copied photo of an "object" illuminated by search lights buring the "Battle of Los Angeles." The rest of the "incredible" photos are those of aircraft and ships involved in some of the incidents the author describes, as well as five primitive artist's conceptions of various sightings covered in the text.

Finally- A Must Have UFO Book

If you are interested in the subject of unidentified flying objects you definitely will want to read this book.
I rarely suggest books concerning the UFO topic as I cannot find ones I feel will benefit the subject on a level needed to break through the wall of denial and delusion that has built around this subject.
It seems we long ago lost our way with subjects considered unknown riding a abstract road mixed of fact and fiction . It seems impossible to find material that gets to the point and is filled with data we need to digest and decide on the issue of flying unknowns.
UFOs in Wartime- written by Mack Maloney is one of the best books in my mind written concerning the Unidentified Flying Object subject out there.
Mack Maloney does not waste our time with fluff or filler. He gets right to the getting leaving the readers head spinning with one report, encounter or sighting after the other . This book is filled from first page to last with information collected from first rate sources and witnesses . Mack left no stone unturned in his research of UFO's during our worlds history of War.

Not only is the book fascinating in its first rate accounts it explains reports of what took place in our skies during our war conflicts going back to AD 312.

How many times have we had to listen to naysayers whine how they deny what they hear or read concerning the UFO issue due to the lack of credible witnesses? How many times have we had to listen to the complaints of those who feel only crazy people or money grabbers are those pushing the UFO agenda? Mack Maloney has given us all the ammunition to give those clinging to that line of reasoning something to think about. His book UFOS in Wartime will give the most hard core skeptic something to chew on for a very long time.
This book is filled with unexplained hard to dispute accounts of unknown objects that were encountered by the world's best and brightest pilots , military people and other high ranking government officials. This is not a book written about the dream state imaginary encounter of a lost lonely soul- this is a book filled with event after event of those I feel are impossible to dismiss.

The best thing about this book for me is that I now have a handy reference book to help me combat the hardest skeptic with facts and exact events that are hard to deny. To tell someone you have stood before a huge UFO and dealt with it first hand is like walking around with a huge sign tattooed on my head that reads
" Insane lady here" . With Mack Maloney's book at hand I can recite case after case of Unidentified Flying Object reports that back up my own experiences with the unknown.
If you find you are often caught frustrated because your ability to reference incredible information quickly of undeniable quality UFO reports this is the book for you.
I could not possibly list the information found in this book as it is filled from cover to cover with incredible accounts all of us should be aware of concerning this issue. You need to read it if you are at all confused or interested in the subject of UFOs.

Mack Maloney has presented an intelligent well thought out book that for me was a huge surprise and now dictionary type addition to my desk top. The next time a skeptic decides to catch me off guard demanding expert witnesses or reports with a out of side of their mouth snarl- I will whip this book and just start reading it to them!

Do yourself a favor and buy this book. In fact buy one for all those side snarling skeptics in your life as well. Unlike many paranormal books that are rather expensive this book is well priced and for a few dollars the best thing you can own if you are interested in the subject of UFO's . I plan on buying a handful of copies to give to those who help me in my own UFO research as well as a few for those who have been biting at my back for years who live in full denial of that which flies about right over their heads.
My advice. Buy this book!

don't expect much

There are no footnotes, there are no endnotes. There is a small list of booka and websites, which makes it clear what this book is- a retelling, a recompillation, of stories told before. There is no new research, no referral to archives or personal interviews by the author. And the "incredible photographs of UFO sightings" boasted of on the covers (back and front) are one reproduction of an LA Times newspaper page, 5 artist's renderings, and 4 standard photos supplied by the Air Force and Navy.
On the plus side the book is well written and does not suffer from an excess of exclaimation points. It is a mildly interresting/entertaining way to pass some time if your health or the weather prevent you from anything more active at the moment.
I wonder if he got as bored writing it as I did reading it- by the time I got to p.216, unnamed people seeing lights just lost me. If I were to guess, I'd say a publisher decided it was time for another UFO book, contacted someone and said organize some of this stuff in a new way so we can give it a new title.

Without specific references, you can't go back to the source of these reports to check whose silly meter wasn't working. On p.222 "...a speed estimated to be 50,000 mph." I hope is a typographical error- how could anyone without special instruments estimate that sort of speed. You couldn't even see it.
One more oddity I noted, p.243 Batwoman; how can something be black and "glowing brightly"? I'm willing to give it a chance, but can't picture how that would look.

REVIEWS OF THE LAST EDITION: "Without a doubt, this text is a must for serious students of pulmonary medicine, whether in training, academic tenure, or mature clinical practice." ― JAMA REVIEW OF 4th EDITION: 'It goes without saying that this is a thorough, in-depth review of chest medicine and as far as I could see, leaves nothing out. I was pleased to see this is a book for active physicians rather than researchers or scientists. It is aimed squarely at the specialists but generalists such as GPs or specialists in other but related disciplines would also find this book a good reference source. I also liked the principle that associated non-respiratory problems are covered in detail. Take for example sarcoidosis, which has always been classified as a chest disease but is also a multi-system disease. The chapter on sarcoidosis is an excellent review of the whole topic and not just the pulmonary aspects. In addition there are excellent chapters on issues that you don't always find, such as air pollution in high altitudes and diving medicine.

Importantly the book is readable and relevant to physicians and adopts a well-rounded approach to informing the doctor what he or she needs to know. The depth of detail achieved is just right and this book has an encyclopaedic feel to it. Well written.

I am a pulmonary/cc fellow and have been using this book as my primary text. It is wonderfully written with good clear explanations and sufficiently detailed without being cumbersome. It gives an excellent overview of all the topics. It is filled with illustrations, graphs and tables that improve the readability of the text. Many of the chapters are written by authors that are world reknowned in their fields. The only complaint I have is for a work of this magnitude it has several grammatical errors. Almost every other page! That is why 4 stars.

Like most homeschooling parents, I found it difficult not to fall into doing conveyor-belt education at home, using grades, grade-level materials, and checklists. After several years of doing this, I had successfully helped one of my children go from Core phase into Hate-of-Learning phase, where her main goal was to get the schoolwork done, as quickly and with as little effort as possible, so she could have her time back. It was awful.
As I discovered and began to understand the Seven Keys of Great Teaching as presented in the Thomas Jefferson Education book (and DeMille s presentation on the Seven Keys), I realized why I had been so successful at creating a hate-of-learning student. Her textbooks were so boring, even I could not stand reading them. We were focused entirely on content, not time. Home education had become so complex, there was no time for simplicity. The results were tedium and frustration. I found that it is very, very hard not to do to my children what was done to me by schools.
Now, having applied for several years albeit imperfectly the Seven Keys... , along with many other ideas gleaned from the TJEd book and related materials, my children are thriving. They really don t know or care what grade they are in, and they never say the word schoolwork (except by accident). We study as a family, and the Love of Learning phase is truly exciting.
My older children have been successful in Great Books programs in college, and I, myself, have taken time to read and study more than I ever would have thought possible. As you might imagine, I am profoundly grateful to Oliver DeMille and his co-authors for opening this world of educational thinking, life to me.

Wonderful Ideas, However...

As someone who used the TJED method for 4 years (and continues using ideas from this book) I feel that others ought to know the pros and cons I have encountered in following this homeschooling method. I had to rate it 4 stars because I like it and feel that there is a lot of valuable information here which can be implimented with any homeschool method, however, I wouldn't recommend using TJED as a method on it's own or following every idea to a "T".

The main ideas of the method are: "Inspire, Not Require" which means that we inspire our children to learn, instead of forcing them. "Read, Write, Discuss" which means that you will be active in their education, reading to them, reading the same books they read, using writing and discussion as the true test of whether they understand the material (no tests). "Lead by Example" which means that you ought to put forth an example of continually learning, yourself, whether that means reading enriching material, taking a class, or pursuing a degree. "The Child is the Text Book", which means that the child should be given choice in what they will learn and be able to pursue their interests. "Read the Classics", which means to use wonderful, appealing books in any given subject or topic, instead of text books.

The method is divided into 4 phases of learning, all of which are self-driven: "Core Phase" (ages 0 - 8), in which children's education is focused on family life, morals, creating and discovering. "Love of Learning Phase" (ages 9 - 12), in which children learn skills simply by pursuing their own interests (it is said that most children want to learn to read and start some math during this stage). "Scholar phase" (ages 12 - 16), in which children take more interest in wide ranges of subjects and choose topics of study to read and discuss with you, the parent. "Depth Phase" (ages 16 - 22), in which teens have discovered their life's work and pursue this with a mentor, either in college or elsewhere.

I used this as my only method during the Core Phase years and found that I kept wrestling with the feeling that my children weren't getting enough in their education and that I felt concerned and embarassed when my children didn't know the things other chidren knew. I think the Unschooling ideas can be used effectively at certain times in a child's life, for self-motivated children, or in younger years, but in general I think children need some structure and someone to guide them because they don't realize all the things they're going to need to know in life and there is so much to learn and so many things to experience. Since the author recommends not using check-lists or schedules I felt really unsure of where we were headed and how to help them learn something in a step-by-step manner. It became very stressful for me at times.

I have since changed methods, but still use ideas from this book. I believe all of the ideas have some relevancy, but according to your best judgment and the individual needs of the child at the time. I feel that my children and I benefited from this method in that they are truly interested in learning and discovering. They love science, history, geography, art, and music, and they are fairly motivated to get their school work done each day. We have an enjoyable time learning these subjects together, instead of having a great division between teacher and student. We have discussions about the things we learn, instead of doing tests, and that has made our schooling more fun. I have gathered a library of wonderful, appealing books for my children and find that they will read educational books in their spare time.

I recommend reading this book and using the ideas that you find helpful and inspiring, and leaving it at that.

Fundamentally flawed. False claims

In this book Oliver DeMille sells a promise and a hope to parents that are dissatisfied with public education. DeMille argues that we need great leaders like Thomas Jefferson to be able to meet the problems of the 21st century, and the way we get those leaders is that we give them an education like what Thomas Jefferson had. DeMille claims to have discovered what nearly all great leaders in the past have had:

"Find a great leader in history, and you will nearly always find two central elements of their education - classics and mentors. From Lincoln, Jefferson and Washington to Ghandi, Newton and John Locke, to Abigail Adams, Mother Theresa and Joan of Arc - great men and women of history studied other great men and women." p. 37

This is the basis for everything else he espouses in the book. However, Joan of Arc most likely couldn't read. George Washington was not familiar with the classics and it was something that he was a little self-conscious about. In fact, if you look at leaders of the past, including the ones DeMille lists as examples, virtually none of them were particularly well-versed in any classics and had any significant mentoring, if any at all. But this is the proof DeMille attempts to use to convince the reader that what he will describe is not only what great leaders in the past have done, but what we must do now.

Reading the classics is fine and anyone would benefit from reading them. But DeMille isn't even consistent with what he considers a "classic." For Thomas Jefferson, it was Homer and Livy, for parents now, it's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and books by Cleon Skousen.

Part of the Thomas Jefferson Education approach is that there are six "Phases of Learning." DeMille claims to have discovered them after researching the life of Thomas Jefferson:

"These Phases were first noted and identified in our research of the education of Thomas Jefferson, and were later seen to be a pattern of many luminaries in history who lived exemplary lives and changed the world for good." p. 31

What he fails to mention is that these "Phases" started with Freud's psychosexual stages, which were then modified by Erik Erikson to be social more than sexual and to extend past childhood into adulthood, which were then also modified by Jean Piaget, until coming into their final form by DeMille (his other book, Leadership Education explains this). These phases are not something DeMille discovered when researching Thomas Jefferson, but rather more likely something he discovered from studying modern cognitive development theorists and child psychologists.

DeMille also claims to have discovered 7 Keys of Great Learning (he later added an eighth about not being stressed). One Key is to only inspire your child, never require them to do anything academically. Another Key is that you should only focus on yourself. If you are having problems with his methods, the problem is most likely that you either aren't inspiring enough or you need to stop fussing over your child and focus more on yourself. In fact, DeMille gives and example of what happens in seminars when people say they are having trouble getting their child to do math. DeMille just simply asks the parent when the last time she (the parent) has read a "math classic" (Euclid, Archimedes, Newton), and when she answers that she hasn't, then DeMille says that's the problem right there. If you read it, then the child will observe your love to learn and will be inspired to discuss what you are learning with you and somehow either learn that way, or be motivated to go learn math through self-instruction (which should only be done through "math classics").

DeMille also advises parents and students to learn a foreign language through a "classic" in that foreign language. He recommends that in order to learn Spanish, you should pick up a copy of Don Quixote in the original Spanish in one hand, and English translation of it in the other. I highly doubt anyone could learn through that method. Regardless, the Spanish in Don Quixote is older and difficult, like Shakespeare is to English speakers now.

DeMille claims that we need leaders to secure our liberties and that only through such leaders will we be saved as a country. And these leaders will only come through TJEd:

"The leaders of the future will come from the schools, homes, colleges, universities and organizations where classics, mentors, and the other elements of Thomas Jefferson Education are cherished and seriously perused." p113

"Where are the new American Founders of the Twenty-first Century? None of us know who those statesmen will be. But this I do know-the great statesmen and stateswomen of the future will be prepared through the Five Pillars of Statesmenship." p133

He also repeatedly claims that the "conveyor-belt" education (public schools) cannot produce the needed leaders and results in unsatisfactory lives and jobs:

"Which one do you want for your children? If you want to be low-income, production, service, government jobs, you ought to be in a conveyor belt school; because that's what it will prepare you for, and will do it effectively...But if you want more, you'd better get into another system." p117

This book is big on promise, but low on details, and the details supplied are fatally flawed and insufficient for any education. The claim that virtually all leaders had an education of classics and mentors is not true (search around on the internet to find more on this claim, there are some good posts evaluating this), and there's no evidence that what he describes as a "leadership education" is at all what leaders in the past have had. He leaves out crucial aspects of Thomas Jefferson's life that probably were influential in his becoming a leader, like learning Latin and Greek at age 9, and graduating college before getting his "mentor" George Wythe when he was a law clerk, let alone Jefferson's natural intellect. I think this book appeals to parents who do want something better for their child, but are not able to properly evaluate the claims and promises DeMille makes.

Before anyone decides to do this approach, ask a few questions about the claims. Use some critical thinking skills. Don't be so quick to accept everything as gospel just because the author started off talking about how the classics were important.

Misleading

I really wanted to like this book, but it was horribly disappointing! A search of five minutes with Google will tell you that the kind of education advocated in this book is nothing like the education Thomas Jefferson received. Thomas Jefferson began his education at an English school at the age of 5 and then began studying Latin, Greek, and French at the age of 9. He began college at William and Mary at the age of 16 where he studied natural philosophy (physics, metaphysics, and mathematics) and moral philosophy (rhetoric, logic, and ethics). His five years of studying law with George Wythe, whose "mentorship" is the entire crux of the methodology in this book, did not begin until after he graduated college. Not only is this nothing like the education Jefferson received, it is nothing like the kind of education Jefferson himself advocated in Notes on the State of Virginia or in his founding of the University of Virginia.

A must for start-ups

This book is a must for anyone starting up a daycare business or for those whose creditors are demanding a financial and/or business plan. I created my business plan using this and other resources, but this was by far the most helpful. The spreadsheet examples took half the work out of my way, and I was able to set it all up in Excel using her strategies. With my spreadsheets in hand I was able to back into my expenses using her method, and then work my way into the rates charged from there (as opposed to setting rates and then realizing later that my costs exceeded my cash flow). A very helpful resource!

This is THI BOOK

This is the most helpful book I have bought. I am opening a Center and the tables/forms are great! The best feature is that they are completely editable and helped me finish my proposal. I really recommend this book to you if you are starting a business or just want to evaluate you financial status. I showed my tables and forms to another Child Care business owner and she asked me to get her another copy! The money was well invested in this book. I am very happy with it.

I would not recommend it to seasoned educational administrators

There are multiple spelling errors in the CD attached documents. Spread sheets are not labeled in any way so you are digging in the book to refer to the proper spread sheet and even when you get there it is not what you can use.
A real disappointment.

About the Author
Richard Nelson-Jones was born in London in 1936. Having spent five years in California as a Second World War refugee, he returned in the 1960s to obtain a Masters and Ph.D from Stanford University. In 1970, he was appointed a lecturer in the Department of Education at the University of Aston to establish a Diploma in Counselling in Educational Settings, which started enrolling students in 1971. During the 1970s, he was helped by having three Fulbright Professors from the United States, each for a year, who both taught students and improved his skills. During this period he broadened out from a predominantly client-centred orientation to becoming much more cognitive-behavioural. He also wrote numerous articles and the first edition of what is now The Theory and Practice of Counselling and Therapy, which was published in 1982. In addition, he chaired the British Psychological Society's Working Party on Counselling and, in1982, became the first chairperson of the BPS Counselling Psychology Section.

In 1984, he took up a position as a counselling and later counselling psychology trainer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he became an Associate Professor. He continued writing research articles, articles on professional issues and books, which were published in London and Sydney. As when he worked at Aston University, he also counselled clients to keep up his skills. In 1997, he retired from RMIT and moved to Chiang Mai in Thailand. There, as well as doing some counselling and teaching, he has continued as an author of counselling and counselling psychology textbooks. A British and Australian citizen, he now divides his time between Chiang Mai and London and regularly visits Australia.

not really useful

The book was not really useful. I would have returned it to Kaplan, but it has been more than 90 days. Most of the questions were repeats from the practice tests that are included in the Kaplan complete book, online. I also thought that the test questions were not reflective of the real tests. You are better off paying for the real practice tests online

UPDATE - In 2015 there is a new version of the MCAT. I would make sure you don't buy this older edition of the book. I believe the new MCAT has biochemistry and psychology. These were not required courses when I took the MCAT in 2012.

The first time I took it I just used a Barrons MCAT book and my college textbooks and the MCATQUESTIONADAY web site ([...]). I have a job and studied at night and got a 26. The second time, I wasn't working and spent 3 weeks just studying using the aforementioned material plus this book and I got a 31.

This book had 2 practice tests. Some of the questions were actually on the test. It must have helped a little because my Verbal went from 8 to 11 and my Physical Science went from 9 to 11. My Biological Science stayed the same at 9.
