HORRIBLE BOOK EVER
By Zhang Minjuan
I am in an MBA program too. I have to use this book as a textbook for the course, Financial Statement Analysis. I have taken Managerial Financing before and done a very good job on that course. But it doesn't help me a lot to understand this terrible book. It isn't that course's fault. I appreciate that I have taken some financing course before I use this book. I can't understand this book very well totally because this book is terrible. Both textbooks for Financing and this course are published by the same publisher, Thomas?..I couldn't believe how different those two books are.

In this book, Pepsi case keeps confusing most readers. Most equations are not highlighted so you can not find them easily and quickly. Homework is not designed for the students who are studying this book but for the authors themselves. Fortunately, our professor sends his master copy to us. It will help us understand homework more, but unfortunately after we have handed in our results.

If anyone who teaches FSA, please do not use this book as your textbook for your students. Pls, pls, pls..Even though you are an expert on accounting or finance, your students will still suffer from your course and almost learn nothing from this TERRIBLE book.

Accolades from a CFA Level 3 candidate
By Anonymous
I purchased this textbook because I knew that it was being used at Tuck school of business in a second year advanced financial accounting course. Unfortunately this book has received extremely poor reviews in Amazon. When I purchased this book I was intimidated by the bad reviews whether or not I could even understand the material. When the book arrived I read through it. I finished the entire textbook without having any issues about not understanding anything.

I went ahead and contacted the two authors to complement them on such a wonderful, advanced textbook on fundamental security analysis. I also used the FASP spreadsheet to valuate companies.

Granted this book is very advanced and probably not suitable for just any ordinary MBA student. I am going to attend a JD MBA program and am currently a CFA Level 3 candidate. I think this book is really the essence of fundamental security analysis, whether you are working on the proprietary trading desk at Goldman Sachs in a Long / Short strategy, or within a hedge fund, mutual fund like Fidelity, or equity research division of a bulge bracket bank.

This is not an introductory textbook to security analysis or financial accounting. These authors make that clear and have written other textbooks also available on Amazon for introductory lessons to financial accounting. I believe this is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject, a modern day Security Analysis textbook like Graham and Dodd. I noticed that this was the most expensive textbook I have ever purchased, but I feel very strongly that the skills I have reinforced in this textbook will pay a premium for the rest of my career in various capacities as a front office investment professional.

Not the best
By Anchorite
I'm using this book for a Financial Statement Analysis MBA course. I have the pre-requisites required to attend the course so the material is not above my head. The book is detailed and touches on many aspects of analysis. The summary tables in the chapters are useful. There are a couple of negatives though. Firstly, the authors sometimes seem to be writing to impress other professors rather than writing with the student in mind. The readability of the chapters is at times horrendous. I'll just give one example (of many): on page 234 of Chapter 4 there reads a line: "The larger is the amount of capital obtained from these senior sources; the smaller will be the amount of capital obtained from common shareholders and the larger will therefore be the CSL ratio". Two of my classmates and I had to think over this for a good 3 or 4 minutes before I figured out what the authors were trying to say. They really could have broken up the above sentence into smaller more readable fragments with easier language. I have read other accounting books that are much simpler to read even when explaining complex concepts. Another flaw is the explanation of the financial ratios. Some of the explanations are long winded and really could be explained in a much simpler fashion to get to the "essence" of what the ratio is seeking. Our Professor, thank goodness, is able to explain the essence of the ratios much better than the 3 authors of the book. Thirdly, it is extremely irritating when the authors refer to some arithmetic in ratios and extract numbers and they state that the number was obtained from the appendix or some other general area without mentioning which page number they extracted the information from. Honestly, the book is hard to read already and there are so many chapters to cover. Do you want to make the student's life harder by asking him/her to fish through looking for where you extracted relevant numbers that you are using for the calculations? Overall, the book provides some really good insights, but the lack of readability and the author's high-horse language is a definite downer. I wanted to rate this a 2.5 but you can either rate it 2 or 3.

Wild Magic

Kristyl Barnette's life was finally coming together. In Clearwater, she found the reason why she could hear people's thoughts and make objects move. She found friends to stand by her. And, in Owen Marsh, she even found someone she could love.

But one spell changed everything.

Thrust into an alternate reality, Kristyl must navigate a new past and different relationships, all while keeping the secret only she and Crystal Jamison know: In their attempt to find a powerful stone for the circle of witches to anchor to, they altered the present.

Owen barely looks at her. She's forced to act like she's friends with the circle and to pretend she's been dating Fox Holloway for years. And to make matters worse, the quartz stone she retrieved from the past might not be the source of pure energy the circle hoped for. There's a darkness to it Kristyl doesn't trust.

Now people are dying mysteriously, and Kristyl must form new alliances with old friends in order to prevent more deaths--and to save the circle from destruction.

Power comes at a price. Will Kristyl be able to pay it before it's too late?

Circle Magic:

It’s only a matter of time before everything Krissa Barnette knows and loves is destroyed.

Seth Whitacre, a centuries-old psychic witch, is determined to exact his revenge on everyone who stands between him and his ultimate goal: taking over the town of Clearwater and turning it into a stronghold for people with abilities. People like him. When Krissa thwarted his attempt to regain his full strength, she became his number one enemy.

Krissa’s father, absent for five years, returns to reveal the reason he left was to learn how to defeat Seth. His mysterious companion, Anya, possesses a wealth of knowledge about the fight but conceals many secrets.

But Krissa has secrets, too, including the reason why she and Owen Marsh have a connection. And it’s difficult to keep the truth from Fox Holloway now that the three of them are linked by a binding ritual.

It’s a race against time to enact the spell that will rid the world of Seth once and for all, but with threats coming from all angles, will Krissa and her friends succeed?

A CHARGE OF VALOR is Book #6 in the #1 Bestselling series THE SORCERER'S RING, which begins with A QUEST OF HEROES--a FREE download on Amazon, with over 1,000 five star reviews!

In A CHARGE OF VALOR (Book #6 in the Sorcerer's Ring), Thor continues on his quest, deeper into the Empire, to retrieve the stolen Destiny Sword and save the Ring. As he and his friends meet unexpected tragedy and lose a member of their close-knit group, Thor and his remaining friends become closer than they ever were, learning that they must face and overcome adversity together. Their journey takes them to new and exotic terrains, including the desolate Salt Fields, the Great Tunnel, and the Mountains of Fire, as they face a host of unexpected monsters at every turn.

Thor’s skills deepen as he undergoes his most advanced training yet, and he will need to draw on powers greater than he has ever used if he is to survive. They finally discover where the Sword has been taken, and they learn that, to retrieve it, they will have to venture to the most dreaded place in the Empire: the Land of the Dragons.

Back in the Ring, Gwendolyn recovers slowly and grapples with deep depression after her attack. Kendrick and the others vow to fight for her honor, despite the impossible odds. There follows one of the great battles in the history of the Ring, as they struggle to free Silesia and conquer Andronicus.

Meanwhile, Godfrey finds himself in disguise behind enemy lines and begins to come into his own, learning what it means to become a warrior, in his own, unique way. Gareth manages to stay alive, using all his cunning to avert capture by Andronicus, while Erec fights for his life to save Savaria from the oncoming invasion by Andronicus—and to save his love, Alistair. Argon pays a precious price for doing the forbidden: meddling in human affairs. And Gwendolyn must decide if she will give up on life, or take up the secluded life of a nun in the ancient Tower of Refuge.

But not before, in a shocking twist, Thor finally learns who his real father is.

Will Thor and the others survive the quest? Will they retrieve the Destiny Sword? Will the Ring survive Andronicus’ invasion? What will become of Gwendolyn, Kendrick and Erec? And who is Thor’s real father?

With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A CHARGE OF VALOR is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. It is 70,000 words.

First time I've ever lost interest in a series...
By Amazon Customer
I started this series after seeing a low price for book one on my kindle. The first few books weren't too bad, and I was able to look past improper grammar, poor spelling, and weak storytelling to try and see the story and setting underneath. By book 4 those thing I overlooked grated on my nerves so much that I was unable to fully enjoy the story. I continued to give the story the benefit of the doubt despite the poor writing, but between book 5 and 6 the story itself is being destroyed by deus ex machina and poor intertwining of individual story arcs.

Why is anyone rating this 5 stars?

Not a very good series at all. Only reason I am still reading it is because I have to finish the story once I start, but if you are thinking about reading this series just don't seriously just don't. The story is not very well written the characters never develop but stay locked in pre-teen idiotic decision making mode. There is so much better fantasy out there. Usually there is a far amount of repetition in fantasy books that are part of a series because you need to know the details of the world and how it works and must be reintroduced to it in each book but this series takes it to the extreme not only are the world details repeated but the characters repeat the same actions again and again. I write this hoping others will see this review while researching the series and decide not to read.

Ready to call it quits.
By B. Seifert
Wow. How could a story that started out so good degenerate into such muck? Morgan Rice can write! When I read the first installment I thought, wow, great premise, believable characters, finally aa awesome series to follow, which come along too seldom. But every book has gotten more and more disjointed, repetitive and, well, kind of silly. This review is not about Morgan Rice. It's about an ebook industry that is too bent on pushing out material as fast as it can whether it has any quality to it or not. Morgan, I for one would buy your full length, well written books. I think you have what it takes. But these speed writings, as well as continually worsening editing, just don't do it for me. Ready to give up on the series.

From Publishers Weekly
In this diligent and rather dry general history, Imber, a lecturer at the University of Manchester, charts the Ottoman Empire from its birth, circa 1300, through its zenith in the reign of Süleyman, to the end of its expansion in the mid-17th century. The first section of his book, a chronological narrative, begins with Osman, the founder who gave the Ottoman Empire his name, and ends, essentially, with the Sultan Ibrahim's descent into madness and his 1648 murder. Imber then moves into considerations of the structures and workings of power in the empire: the dynasty, which galvanized control around a sultan and his male progeny; the methods by which ministers and other officials were recruited; the physical and political structure of the palace, with its eunuchs, harems and grand viziers; the division of control in the provinces, the sacred and secular laws; and the branches of the military. His narrative, which makes great use of secondary sources but also employs newly translated primary ones as well, will introduce the lay reader to the complicated and often bloody history of the Empire, if not necessarily elegantly, then efficiently and thoroughly.

From Booklist
For many laymen in the West, the Ottoman Empire is almost a pejorative term. High-school students learn about the "sick man of Europe" prior to World War I or are well versed in the massacres of Armenians within the empire. The successor state to the empire, Turkey, is poised to join the European Union; so it would be wise for general readers to receive a balanced account of the empire's growth and structure. Imber, senior lecturer in Turkish at the University of Manchester, has certainly provided that account. The first quarter of this well-written book is a chronological history ending in the mid-seventeenth century. The remainder of the book is devoted to topics such as the organization of the military, the legal system, and administrative control of the provinces. What emerges is a portrait of an imperial system that provided reasonably efficient government and surprising opportunities for both non-Turks and non-Muslims. Jay Freeman

A good introduction to the institutions of the Ottoman state
By MarkK
For the past thirty-six years, readers seeking an introduction to the Ottoman empire have turned to Halil Inalcik's classic The Ottoman Empire: The Classical Age 1300-1600. Written by the dean of Ottoman history, it provided an overview of its history and an examination of its components that has stood the test of time. Over the three and a half decades since its publication, however, a wealth of new scholarship has emerged that has refined and developed our knowledge. The fruits of this can be seen in Colin Imber's study, one that treads much of the same ground as Inalcik but does so with the benefit of an additional generation of study.

The layout of Imber's book is similar to that of Inalcik's (which Imber helped translate); an initial section chronicling the political and military history of the period followed by chapters providing an analytical overview of various aspects of the empire. But whereas Inalcik's book provided a broad-ranging survey that included its cultural and religious elements, Imber focuses more narrowly on the institutions of state: the palace, the bureaucracy, and the military. This allows him to provide a more detailed examination of the military state, one that describes its development and shows how it both conquered and governed the lands of three continents.

Clearly written and well grounded in the literature of the field, Imber's book is a detailed and up-to-date account of the factors underpinning Ottoman power in the first centuries of its existence. Anyone seeking an introduction to the Ottoman empire would do well to start with it. With its concentration on imperial institutions and its closer examination of such things as the Ottoman navy (which has received far more scholarly attention in recent decades than it had when Inalcik wrote his book), it complements rather than replaces Inalcik's longstanding survey, providing readers with a good foundation for exploring in more detail the last and greatest of the Muslim empires.

Not what I was looking for
By Neannalina
This book suggests the structure of power in the Ottoman Empire, from 1300 to 1650. I did not get that information from reading this book. Of course, he mostly took the European perspective, as the book title suggests, but this book lacts more facts than most books on the Ottoman Empire. This book was lacking information for me. I would not have bought it if I would have been allowed to look inside the book first. (I did not have that feature when I purchased the book).

From School Library Journal
Grades 4-7--The St. Charles Players perform this readers' theatre-style rendition of H.G. Wells' classic story. Using appropriate sound effects and alternating readers allows listeners to differentiate between characters and to develop a sense of place and time. The lively narration will hold listeners' attention from beginning to end. The story begins with a revolutionary Victorian scientist who claims to have invented a machine that allows him to travel through time. Using flashbacks, he recounts his adventures in the futurist world he visits in his time machine to a group of skeptical friends. This abridged version will work well as an introduction to classic literature in elementary grade classes, but omits too much of the original text for older students. Consider adding this title to audiobook collections that focus on classic, time-tested literature.

"Kudos to Campfire for such a fun effort with such a fun story. With [48] other titles hitting the market over the next two years, distribution through Random House, and brilliant art in each based on the previews I've seen, I expect Campfire to become a major player in the graphic novel market."

— Bucky Carter, EN/SANE World

"I highly recommend Campfire’s comics. They do what they are intended to do and do it in  a way that excites kids about classic literature."

— Chris Wilson, The Graphic Classroom (a resource for teachers and librarians)

From the Publisher
The Time Traveller steps into his machine and emerges in the year 802,700 a utopian age of peace and harmony. That is, until the ruckus of the theft of his machine changes all that. Ben Kingsley, the reader, is known for his many roles onscreen, including Ghandi.

One of the greatest books I've ever read--get this edition!
By Polymath
When I tried reading this book as a child many, many years ago, some of the "big" words and allusions made it hard going, and I never completed it then. Finally, about fifteen years ago I did read it through, but still was missing something. Then, a few weeks ago, I got this edition, after having enjoyed the Penguin edition of "The War of the Worlds" with its annotations and map. Well, the annotations in this edition (about four pages worth as endnotes) of "The Time Machine" cleared away whatever fuzz remained, and I was completely overcome by the greatness of the book, great from whatever way I looked at it: plot, speculation, characters, "sense of wonder", even throw away humor were all topnotch. I couldn't believe what I'd been missing. A few days later, I read another editon of the book that didn't have notes, and had no trouble following that version. I plan to reread the book again shortly. So if you've had difficulty reading "The Time Machine" for some of the reasons mentioned above, get this version pronto and find out what a true classic is.

A Timeless Classic
By Daniel Jolley
It goes without saying that this book is a science fiction classic in every sense of the word and that H.G. Wells was a founding father of the genre. This book proves that science fiction does not necessarily need to be heavily technical but does need to deal with grand themes such as the nature of society; man's hopes, dreams, and fears; and the very humanity of man. Wells does not go to great lengths in describing the time machine nor how it works. He lays the foundation of the story in science and then proceeds with his somewhat moralistic and certainly socially conscious story. This makes his writing much more enjoyable than that of a Jules Verne, who liked to fill up pages with scientific and highly technical nomenclature. One of the more striking aspects of the novel is Wells' treatment of the actual experience of time travel--moving in time is not like opening and walking through a door. There are physical and emotional aspects of the time travel process--in fact, some of the most descriptive passages in the book are those describing what the Time Traveler experiences and sees during his time shifts.
Basically, Wells is posing the question of What will man be like in the distant future? His answer is quite unlike any kind of scenario that modern readers, schooled on Star Wars, Star Trek, and the like, would come up with. He gives birth to a simple and tragic society made up of the Eloi and the Morlocks. In contrasting these two groups, he offers a critique of sorts of men in his own time. Clearly, he is worried about the gap between the rich and the poor widening in his own world and is warning his readers of the dangers posed by such a growing rift. It is most interesting to see how the Time Traveler's views of the future change over the course of his stay there. At first, he basically thinks that the Morlocks, stuck underground, have been forced to do all the work of man while the Eloi on the surface play and dance around in perpetual leisure. Later, he realizes that the truth is more complicated than that. The whole book seems to be a warning against scientific omniscience and communal living. The future human society that the Time Traveler finds is supposedly ideal--free of disease, wars, discrimination, intensive labor, poverty, etc. However, the great works of man have been lost--architectural, scientific, philosophical, literary, etc.--and human beings have basically become children, each one dressing, looking, and acting the same. The time traveler opines that the loss of conflict and change that came in the wake of society's elimination of health, political, and social issues served to stagnate mankind. Without conflict, there is no achievement, and mankind atrophies both mentally and physically.
This basic message of the novel is more than applicable today. While it is paramount that we continue to research and discover new scientific facts about ourselves and the world, we must not come to view science as a religion that can ultimately recreate the earth as an immense garden of Eden. Knowledge itself is far less important than the healthy pursuit of that knowledge. Man's greatness lies in his ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances. Speaking only for myself, I think this novel points out the dangerousness of Communism and points to the importance of individualism--if you engineer a society in which every person is "the same" and "equal," then you have doomed that society.

Past and present masterpiece
By Philip Challinor
This is the little number that started it all. For the English-speaking world (some translations of Verne possibly aside), science fiction begins with the four brief, brilliant novels published by H G Wells in the 1890s. The War of the Worlds is a still-unsurpassed alien invasion story; The Invisible Man one of the first world-dominating mad scientist tales; and The Island of Dr Moreau a splendidly misanthropic story of artificial evolution and genetic modification. But The Time Machine came first, launching Wells' career in literature; and, after just over a century, there still isn't anything nearly like it. A Victorian inventor travels to the year 802701, where the class divisions of Wells' day have evolved two distinct human races: the helpless, childlike and luxurious Eloi and the monstrous, mechanically adept and subterranean Morlocks. Predictably, the film version turned them into the usual Good Guys and Bad Guys, though it's still worth seeing, particularly for its conception of the Time Machine itself - a splendid piece of Victorian gadgetry. The book, despite its sociological-satirical premise, is rather more complex in its treatment of the opposed races, and the Time Traveller's voyage ends, not with them, but still further in the future, with images of a dead sun and a dark earth populated only by scuttling, indefinite shadows. As in the other three novels, too, the premise of the story is carefully worked out and clearly explained - a discipline largely beyond science fiction today, in which time travel, invading aliens or whatever are simply taken for granted as convenient genre props and automatic thought-nullifiers. After more than a century, The Time Machine is still waiting for the rest of us to catch up.

An Invincible Beast: Understanding the Hellenistic Pike Phalanx in Action, by Christopher Matthew

The Hellenistic pike-phalanx was a true military innovation, transforming the face of warfare in the ancient world. For nearly 200 years, from the rise of the Macedonians as a military power in the mid-fourth century BC, to their defeat at the hands of the Romans at Pydna in 168BC, the pike-wielding heavy infantryman (the phalangite) formed the basis of nearly every Hellenistic army to deploy on battlefields stretching from Italy to India. And yet, despite this dominance, and the vast literature dedicated to detailing the history of the Hellenistic world, there remains fierce debate among modern scholars about how infantry combat in this age was actually conducted.

Christopher Matthews critically examines phalanx combat by using techniques such as physical re-creation, experimental archaeology, and ballistics testing, and then comparing the findings of this testing to the ancient literary, artistic and archaeological evidence, as well as modern theories. The result is the most comprehensive and up-to-date study of what heavy infantry combat was like in the age of Alexander the Great and his Successors.

High Recommended for Those Interested Hellenistic Tactics and Drill
By Falcon6
If you are interested in the details of how the Hellenistic Pike-phalanx operated, this book is a rare prize. I ordered it directly from P&S and have been reading it over the last two months. After reading the book I now understand why early-modern pike drill and Hellenistic drill were significantly different. Highly recommended for those interested in Hellenistic tactics and drill

Leon Block makes Bach simple
By Philip Jones
Bach for guitar greatly simplified. Leon Block made many simple arrangements with the guitar picker in mind. Using a pick eliminates bass notes in many cases. Classical guitar's can probably figure out the bass. Most arrangements are very good. A few are kind of lame. This is a good choice if you are looking for Bach pieces you can work up quickly.

A transformative look at Los Angeles

This literary and cartographic exploration of Los Angeles reorients our understanding of the city in highly imaginative ways. Illuminated by boldly conceived and artfully rendered maps and infographics, nineteen essays by LA's most exciting writers reveal complex histories and perspectives of a place notorious for superficiality. This chorus of voices explores wildly different subjects: Cindi Alvitre unveils the indigenous Tongva presence of the Los Angeles Basin; Michael Jaime-Becerra takes us into the smoky, spicy kitchens of a family taquero business in El Monte; Steve Graves traces the cowboy-and-spacemen-themed landscapes of the San Fernando Valley. Overlooked sites and phenomena become apparent: LGBT churches and synagogues, a fabled ''Cycleway,'' mustachioed golden carp, urban forests, lost buildings, ugly buildings. What has been ignored, such as environmental and social injustice, is addressed with powerful anger and elegiac sadness, and what has been maligned is reexamined with a sense of pride: the city's freeways, for example, take the shape of a dove when viewed from midair and pulsate with wailing blues, surf rock, and brassy banda. Inspired by other texts that combine literature and landscape, including Rebecca Solnit's Infinite City, this book's juxtapositions make surprising connections and stir up undercurrents of truth. To all those who inhabit, love, or seek to understand Los Angeles, LAtitudes gives meaning and reward.

Review
“In consciously directing readers down a series of proverbial paths less taken, LAtitudes belies that laziest of stereotypes of Los Angeles as a homogenous, undifferentiated mass. As the book makes clear, the city is both palimpsest and jigsaw puzzle, all layers and fragments.” --Oliver Wang, Los Angeles Times

“Written by an eclectic group of wits and scholars, this colorful and beautifully designed volume can be read again and again.” --Jill Stewart, LA Weekly

“When I created my atlas of San Francisco, I was hoping that we were at the dawn of a new era of inventive, subversive, gorgeous mapping and social geographies. Let a thousand atlases bloom, I kept muttering, and I couldn't be more pleased that the first horse out of the gate first tiger lily in the flowerbed? is of the city of angels and overpasses and pastrami and tacos, of forgotten rivers, wars, refugees, voters, homesteaders, of dreams busy biting the dust and tribes miraculously reappearing. Cities are inexhaustible; they exist in countless versions, depending on who you ask and where you go and what you want; and an atlas like LAtitudes invites you to open up other people's versions and in so doing find your own.” --Rebecca Solnit, author of Infinite City: A San Francisco Atlas and Unfathomable City: A New Orleans Atlas

“Unique, fascinating, and totally fresh....Oh, yes, and LAtitudes has plenty of attitude. A must for anyone interested in Los Angeles history, culture, geography, or food.” --Lisa See, author of Shanghai Girls: A Novel

“Expresses the soul and spirit of Los Angeles.” --Glen Creason, Los Angeles Magazine

“Whole-heartedly embraces the Whitmanesque myth of Los Angeles: 'Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.'” --Jon Christensen, LA Observed

“As a geographer I'm always quick to describe LA as a failed city, an urban planning horror that has led to people like me who lived sixty miles from downtown to claim they re basically from LA. After reading LAtitudes, however, I returned to Los Angeles this year with a newfound respect for the hopeful attempts, negotiations, complications, and mistakes that have made the city what it is today: a composite urban behemoth of bewildering beauty. The only thing more enticing than the quality of the prose in this book is the depth of the ideas contained therein.” --Bradley L. Garrett, author of Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City

“A humane and beautifully written biography of the city that is also a lyrical exploration of its many layers...a source of inspiration and surprise for those of us who think we know LA as well those who have only imagined it from afar.” --Alastair Bonnett, author of Unruly Places: Lost Spaces, Secret Cities, and Other Inscrutable Geographies

“Here we have a volume that, through stories of LA's history, tells stories of our present and foretells our future. Based on insights from a diverse group of authors, LAtitudes reveals not only our geography but our complicated, dark, and hopeful soul for those that seek to understand our glorious city.” --Karen Mack, founder and executive director, LA Commons

“Offers the reader secrets that Google Maps is incapable of finding, navigation tips through the past, present, and future that Waze cannot fathom, and an understanding of Los Angeles that our trusted Thomas Guides could never reveal. What you hold in your hand is the new essential atlas for Los Angeles.” --Aaron Paley, cofounder, CARS and CicLAvia

“Through original and illustrative cartography, the stories of LA's past and present are told the way they should be dynamically with essays rich in historical content and distinct Angeleno experiences.” --Liza Posas, coordinator, LA as Subject

A Tour de Force Guide to America's City
By A. Lueder
I feel like I have waited for this book my whole life. For anyone who grew up in L.A., or lived in L.A., or for whatever reason loves L.A., this book is a heartfelt valentine to America's most fascinating metropolis. It delves into architecture, history, geography, agriculture, the environment, and the tangled racial relations of the indigenous Native Americans, the Californios, the Anglo settlers, and the Xican@s, each of which left lasting, if not always evident, imprints on the city and who continue to mold it today.

But LAtitudes is not all serious -- there are whimsical chapters on the history of L.A. radio, sure to inspire sweet nostalgia; there is a detailed map of non-chain Mexican restaurants; and there is even a quick rundown of the urban flora unique to the city.

LAtitudes has something to interest everyone and certainly anyone who has the pleasure of reading this delightful book will experience a number of "ah ha" moments and a deeper appreciation of the L.A. we have lived and loved.

Taking an Attitude: Los Angeles on the Square
By Joan Fry
I found this book delightful the first time I held it in my hands and ran a finger over the cover: portions of it, like the title, are raised. Inside, the illustrations are often unexpected and almost always add to the essays. I don't often go to the city of LA because I don't particularly like cities. But LA is a hard place to stay away from. If I'm not driving to the airport, I'm taking the train and enjoying Union Station. I've watched shows in the city, gone to museums, even met friends for lunch in Chinatown. As a non-native, I found some of the essays to be especially enjoyable because they stretched my mind or set fire to my imagination--or both. In particular: Teddy Varno's "The Bovine Metropolis," Luis J. Rodriguez's "How Xican@s Are the Makeweight of Los Angeles's Past, Present, and Future Perspectives," and Charles Hood's "Orphans, Dwarfs, Strangers, and Monsters," an essay (you wouldn't guess this from the title) about trees. Unfortunately the quality of the essays isn't uniform. A couple of them wouldn't have passed muster in a college composition class. In addition, Heyday, the publisher, needs a copy editor with a better eye. Plenty of typos, and somebody should have caught the fact that a "mountain lion" and a "cougar" are the same animal. But on the whole I recommend this book and plan to buy several copies for Christmas presents. Oh yeah--and I love the shifting meanings of the title!

One can easily get lost in the miles and miles of traffic-ridden ...
By AndreasG
In general. Having New York and various European cities as models in my head, it actually cost me some time wrap my head around that this was a very different type of city, and that it needs to be appreciated on its own terms. One can easily get lost in the miles and miles of traffic-ridden freeways, endless strip malls and empty sidewalks. Getting to appreciate what LA has to offer takes a real effort and it reveals itself slowly. Getting beyond cliches about “no there there” and “no history”, you can see that LA, and California in general, do not have a long history in terms of written documentation, but there most certainly is a unique, rich and diverse historical heritage that shaped the region into what it is.

This book compiles essays from writers with different backgrounds that address widely different topics that are beyond the cliched narratives of Junipero Serra’s missions, the Gold Rush, etc. Each essay is approximately 10 pages long and is, at least in part, based on a map showing a particular characteristic. Topics range from a description of the demographics, economy and ecology of pre-Columbian, colonial and Mexican greater LA basin, homesteading in the outer parts of what is now LA, descriptions of vegetation and the LA River, and descriptions of failed schemes and potential alternative histories they might have presented. Also included are essays that belie the idyllic stereotypical image sometimes presented, and show the struggles of various groups against the darker side of the city.

This book is a good complement to Mike Davis’s “City of Quartz”, which also presents an alternative history of Los Angeles.
