It is amazing how such a small book can elicit so many emotions from the reader as Ms. Jax vividly relates the deeper understandings she has formed as a result of her travels both here in the USA and her many trips abroad. Ms. Jax eloquently expresses her deeply felt observations of the cultures of which she is writing. It is clear that things are not always the way the powers that be would like one to perceive them. It is also clear that these travels have resulted in a deeper search for understanding herself through time. I highly recommend you read this book to see the world through one travelers eyes. You will be surprised at what you discover.

Journey of Self
By Samuel Rafael
This little work, so much more than a book about travel, reflects and reveals many deep personal insights about the author's psyche. There are physical places described, of course, some far off and some nearer by. Some are magnificent and others vile and dangerous, but all are seen and depicted in the author's gentle, vivid and eloquent style. It is a journey of self, presented as a parallel process in the author's reflections about the countries and places she has visited. Throughout her journeys, she peers deeply into her own soul to make sense of what she observes in the context of who she is and who she has become.

On trips taken for business or with no purpose other than to explore, there is a deep and poetic nostalgia evident for old experiences and for relationships lost, and an enduring sadness and longing for a love that can no longer be and for a child that was never born. Along the way, the author observes humanity and inhumanity, inequities among nations and people and the further oppression of the already downtrodden. But there is also joy, insight, satisfaction and acknowledgement, buttressed by the author's own struggle for gender congruence. Lest one think this short work is depressing, it is not. It stands as a realistic lament that although life has moved on and taken the bloom, dreams and hopes of youth, it still holds the hopeful promise of many good journeys to come.

The Soulful Traveler
By MaryA850
The Soulful Traveler is this summer's MUST READ. Rene Jax will take you on a journey through exotic places around the world and expose you to the gentler side of human nature. As i joined Rene on her expedition to these great locations, I found myself lost in thought of my own journeys through this place called "Life". When I came upon the last page, I was sad that this brief moment of reflection was ending. I am hopeful that Rene will take time in the near future to create another masterpiece for her dedicated followers.

A Handy Tool ! ! !
By Eddie Landsberg
Ha ! The reviewer below me made a good point (if you've never seen this book before), and I for one have no intention of typing out the 1200 tunes !
I'll tell you why I like it... I have loads of Jazz fake books. This for sure *isn't* "The Real Book", but its a nice collection of more poppish tunes that I find useful to have along on a gig because sometimes people do request those '50s, '60s or '70s pop tunes or even older "less hip" standards and tunes. Its one thing to play for "musicians" but what about when you play in restaurants, at weddings, or for real people? It also has those tunes that vocalists tend to call but that instrumental Jazz ensembles don't play as often (you know, showtunes, Barbara Streisand Stuff, etc. etc.) and even lot's of stuff good for wedding gigs (I WILL SURVIVE, LOVE THEMES from films like TOP GUN and FOOTLOOSE, MANDY, MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA, THE "IN" CROWD, GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, GETTING TO KNOW YOU, QUE SERA SERA, even JIVE TALKIN', I SHOT THE SHERIFF. and '70s stuff like PIANO MAN, JIVE TALKIN', BRANDY (You're a Find Girl), CELEBRATE and JULIE, DO YOU LOVE ME ! ! !)
But its not just wedding band music... I've found some morsels in this one that aren't in most of my Jazz books... MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS, CRY ME A RIVER, THE JERSEY BOUNCE, SAMABA DE ORPHEAU, WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, etc.
I can't list all 1200 tunes for you as I mentioned, but here are some of the categories... Hits of the 1910s, 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and a few from the 90s, Big Band Favorites, Broadway Show Hits, Movie Hits, TV Hits (including the THEME from CHEERS, THE ODD COUPLE and SECRET AGENT MAN), Country Classics (HEY GOOD LOOKIN, I WALK THE LINE, RING OF FIRE), folk songs (including PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON), Inspirational and Holiday Songs (and stuff like THE WEDDING BAND MARCH, HAPPY BIRTHDAY), Blues Dixieland and Jazz tunes, Polka, Singalongs (Special Requests and Novelty Tunes)", Songs in 3/4 Time, Latin Tunes (including A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOOL), and a few Hawaiin tunes.
Overall, its some great ammunition to have on the gig... the print might be small, the changes "less hip" and the book, very bulky, but I really feel comfortable having this book around. The musicians are going to want to play Coltrane and Miles Davis, but the reality is, the people are going to request the type of tunes in the book, and those sit in vocalists are going to call them ! Be prepared !

A SONG LIST - Table of contents from ONE of the editions. (Check first!!)
By Stephen DeVore
When I first posted this list on September 25, 2004, I got the Table of Contents from the Hal Leonard Web site, but I did not know that they would publish later editions while apparently using the same ISBN number! The songs listed now at the H.L. site DIFFER from this list here. But I am leaving this list as a reference to the edition listed there when I first posted here.

2014 Update: The Hal Leonard site shows a 5th Edition. It has the same ISBN-13 number as listed on Amazon (978-0793529391), and likely has different songs than I first listed here in 2004. The ISBN-10 on Amazon is 0793529395. Amazon still says this was published in 1994. If you are concerned about exact songs you're getting, if possible, first check which edition you are getting before you order.

Formerly known as "The Book," - 1200 great songs
By A Customer
I learned the hard way that this was formerly known as "The Book," and, except for the cover, the "Ultimate Fake Book" I bought is exactly the same as my copy of "The Book." Not to worry - it will make a great present for somebody.
All of the Hal Leonard "Ultimate" fake books are excellent, but this one and "The Best Fake Book Ever" are particularly generous, with lyrics, chords, and melody for some 1200 songs each. The variety is phenomenal - from Broadway to Folk to Big Band to current hits. My friends and I like to gather around a fake book and sing the night away. I can't think of a better way to spend an evening.
One complaint other than the mixup with the other book - the paperback cover and plastic looseleaf binding are a bit flimsy for a book this big.

Pure Beauty: Judging Race in Japanese American Beauty Pageants, by Rebecca Chiyoko King-O’Riain

With a low rate of immigration and a high rate of interracial marriage, Japanese Americans today compose the Asian ethnic group with the largest proportion of mixed-race members. Within Japanese American communities, increased participation by mixed-race members, along with concerns about overassimilation, has led to a search for cultural authenticity, giving new answers to the question, Who is Japanese American? In Pure Beauty, Rebecca Chiyoko King-O’Riain tackles this question by studying a cultural institution: Japanese American community beauty pageants in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Honolulu. King-O’Riain employs rich ethnographic fieldwork to discover how these pageants seek to maintain racial and ethnic purity amid shifting notions of cultural identity. She uses revealing in-depth interviews with candidates, queens, and community members, her experiences as a pageant committee member, and archival research—including Japanese and English newspapers, museum collections, private photo albums, and mementos—to establish both the importance and impossibility of racial purity. King-O’Riain examines racial eligibility rules and tests, which encompass not only ancestry but also residency, community service, and culture, and traces the history of pageants throughout the United States. Pure Beauty shows how racial and gendered meanings are enacted through the pageants, and reveals their impact on Japanese American men, women, and children. King-O’Riain concludes that the mixed-race challenge to racial understandings of Japanese Americanness does not necessarily mean an end to race as we know it and asserts that race is work—created and re-created in a social context. Ultimately, she determines that the concept of race, fragile though it may be, is still one of the categories by which Japanese Americans are judged.Rebecca Chiyoko King-O’Riain is lecturer in sociology at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.

Disclaimer: the author is a personal friend. I was only dimly aware of this aspect of her work before I read this book; my eyes were OPENED by "Pure Beauty", and in a good way.

I never took sociology at school, and while I agree, heartily with the dictum, "I am a man, and whatever concerns humanity is of interest to me", I'm generally not one to read sociology textbooks (which is how "Pure Beauty" scans to me) for pleasure!

Yet pleased I was to take in the myriad details and interesting analysis of Dr. King's fieldwork as a beauty pageant volunteer, and later judge. I was fascinated by the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, multi-culturalism, identity, feminism, economics, exploitation and growth young Japanese-American women lived and explored as they sought to be crowned "Nisei Week" or "Cherry Blossom" Queen.

I think some of the repetition noted by an earlier reviewer is due to the what I perceive as the structure of the book as a college level text, which would often be assigned in chapters in a survey course. Thus each chapter has to be able to stand alone, and be understood in isolation, even if certain theses have already been tangentially explored in an earlier chapter. But if you look past that, the chapters each give a richer, more nuanced picture of the issues that the Introduction sketches, and as my understanding of the lived reality of this ethnic experience (not one I own in the slightest; I am a Majority Male) grew as I read, the later chapters built on the earlier.

In light of the election of President Obama, there has been a lot said and written about a "Post-Racial" society. I found "Pure Beauty" to be a well-researched and written opposition of empirical fact to this perhaps wishful notion. The participants in these pageants, particularly the young multi-racial women, seem to be BOTH rejecting and embracing the notion that race and ethnic identity don't matter; or to put it another way, they are more interested in REDEFINING boundaries and identities than blowing them up outright.

Highly Recommended.

Important intersection of sociology and community-based work
By DMB
This book is ground-breaking in its effort to discuss racial identity, changing demographics, and their meaning in the context of beauty pageants, a Japanese American institution. For those of us working in community-based organizations, King-O'Riain's book explains and gives context to the tensions around multi-racial Japanese Americans and how our organizations are changing and need to change. For example, multi-racial people are asserting themselves as a part of the community and some community members are resisting their inclusion. This book helps us in the community to evaluate how our organizations will respond to this tension, which is a vital for us to be relevant and to survive. Not limited to those people in the Japanese American community, King-O'Riain's book is an important read for people working in any community that is facing these changes.

An Introduction to Asperger's Syndrome: A journey from diagnosis to discovery, exploring real life stories and practical solutions, by Mr

While some estimates place the prevalence of Asperger’s Syndrome at 1 in 500, it’s rare when we come across others with Asperger’s and even rarer when we share what our life experience is like. For many there is little or no guidance on the journey of discovering one has Asperger’s to fully dealing with all of its various aspects. Asperger’s Syndrome comes with both positive and negative aspects and while some in life have managed to utilize the traits to be highly successful in their careers others have found life a struggle and have had difficulty finding there purpose. A paper published in The Lancet Psychiatry in June 2014, suggested that suicidal thoughts were ten times more likely in adults with Asperger’s Syndrome than in the general population. This is a tragedy which is preventable with adequate support. I believe that everybody deserves the best opportunities and quality of life. I hope by writing this book one is able to understand the different aspects of the condition and get the support and solutions they need. Here’s what the book covers: -Signs and symptoms -Getting a diagnosis -Dealing with the diagnosis -Aspects of Aspergers -Anxiety and depression -Solutions -Real life stories www.Aspergerstestsite.com

This book is a must read. It is kind, gentle and most of all REAL!
By Karen
My husband introduced me to this book as we both agreed that he had aspergers. I wanted to understand all that I could so that our lives would go a little smoother since many of his actions, ways of expressing himself and manner of doing things were frustrating to me. One thing I knew for sure was that he is a wonderful man but an enigma that I needed to understand. This book not only gave me what I needed but I got a bonus! Guess who else has aspergers? Yes you guessed it. I also have ADD (learned that 17 years ago) which I knew and learned to live with. Now I have the other piece of the puzzle that makes my life and my life with my wonderful husband that much richer.

Review
"[T]he selfie goddess announced that she will soon bless fans with a revised and updated version of her aptly titled bestseller, Selfish, the 448-page coffee table book of several previously-unseen photographs." –USA Today

“The first lady of #fame – the 100 Most Influential People” –Time Magazine

"Kim Kardashian already broke the internet. Now she's poised to break the best-seller lists. . . . It's easy to mock - indeed, the title almost does it for you - but this seemingly throw-away collection may end up being just as much a part of pop-art history as when Andy Warhol painted soup cans." -Daily News

"Kim Kardashian is the queen of selfies, and she's planning to make sure everyone knows it in her upcoming book, Selfish." -MTV News

"Now there's a book cover if we've ever seen one! . . . this book is obviously made for her biggest fans. Not to mention it includes previously unseen selfies!" -USA Today

"Kim Kardashian can take a selfie anywhere, and we mean anywhere!" -E! News

"In her new coffee-table book, Selfish, the reality star documents nine years of her life in selfies - some seen by millions, others revealed for the first time." -Harper's Bazaar

"Now you can get between the covers with her— hardcovers, that is. With more than 400 pages of intimate snaps (including bikini selfies, lingerie selfies and, yes, several nude selfies), flipping through her new photo book Selfish, published by art-house giant Rizzoli, feels like scrolling through a fabulously rich and beautiful friend’s well-curated smartphone." -Playboy Magazine

"As they say, you have to love yourself first! After months of anticipation (and just a touch of eye-rolling), Kim Kardashian's selfie-filled coffee table book, aptly entitled Kim Kardashian's Selfish, [has] finally arrive[d]." -US Weekly

"Kim Kardashian has joined the ranks of Giacometti, da Vinci, Lichtenstein, O’Keeffe, and just about every other revered artist of any era: she, too, now has a Rizzoli-published book devoted to her work at the forefront of an artistic movement. Indeed, Rizolli notes that she’s 'widely regarded as a trailblazer of the ‘selfie movement.'” -Flavorwire.com

"Treat your coffee table to a 300-page collection of Kim's best selfies . . . " -People Magazine

"[Kim K's] the queen of the selfie. And her soon-to-be released hardcover book . . . should be all the evidence she'll need to maintain that throne." -CR Fashion Book

"Attention all Kim Kardashian fans - here's the E! star as you've never seen her before! . . . aptly dubbed Selfish . . . [the images] definitely don't disappoint." -E! Online

"As it stands, Kim Kardashian West holds the title for most Instagram followers (at 30 million) just behind the platform's own account (at 60 million). An average Kim K selfie garners upwards of 650,000 likes with her wedding photo receiving 2.5 million likes. With all that in mind, there's no question that Kim's controversial new book, Selfie, is going to fly off the shelves." –V Magazine

“From her favorite throwback images to current ultra-sexy glam shots, Selfish will provide readers with a behind-the-scenes look into Kardashian’s life.” –In Style Magazine

"The new take on selfie lit will feature 64 more pages and more than 120 new pics. . ." –New York Daily News

"The photography book got a new title too as the latest edition is called Selfish: More Me! Classic, Kim." –PerezHilton.com

Review by a long time Orthodontist
By Amazon Customer
This book is a great compilation of years of Earl's Pearls from the PCSO Bulletin.

Earl's clinical tips are incredibly useful for the practicing orthodontist. I have found so many of them helpful in day to day clinical practice. Sometimes I marvel at how sharp the aurthor is and I think "that makes so much sense-why didn't I think of that". It is worth the price to have all of this information in one place. The electronic format works well and all the photos are very clear.

It was a good idea to e publish this book.

A timeless classic
By A Customer
I first read this book back in 1982 while a student attending the American School in Japan in Tokyo. The thousand or so pages of text did seem daunting at first but I could not put the book down ater the first few pages. Not only did it provide me with a greater understanding of my own Japanese heritage (I am half Japanese) but it did offer a greater and fundamental insight into what all of us are searching for -- the understanding of the self, way to approach things seen and unseen around us and a calm awareness of life. I have worked and lived throughout the world (Latin America, West/East Europe, and Russia in addition to the US)since my first reading and find that I am able to identify with the local cultures and find that many of the "lessons" garnered from this epic are also interwoven into the ideals of each of culture. It is also interesting to note that "the way" is now commonly referenced in leading business publications and books (read some of the great recent stuff from Tom Peters and you will see what I mean). The search for such understanding goes back to the Iliad but it is possible to trace the development, maturation and blossom of one single person (in this case Musashi) and experience the continous challenges he must face in order to defeat his demons. The combat scene at the Spreading Pine rivals any such related written description of someone working in a difficult situation but under total self control. Whenever I find myself in a difficult situation, I take time and re-read that chapter. Read the "Book of Five Rings" from the pen of Musahi himself next. At the very least, anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding into Japanese culture should read this book.

The Tale of Old Japan's Most Famous Swordsman
By Stuart W. Mirsky
Written in the early twentieth century, this indigenous Japanese novel recounts the life and times of old Japan's greatest swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi -- a man who began life as an over-eager and rather brutish young lout but who, through the discipline of Japan's "way of the sword," turned himself into a master of his chosen weapon. But this tale is not only about a life spent in training to perfect the art of killing with a sharpened piece of steel. In the venerable Japanese tradition, it is also about a man's search to conquer himself, to become a better person. The Buddhist view cultivated by the Japanese warrior class allowed for a spiritual dimension to their very bloody enterprise of warfare and killing. And it is this aspect of his training that consumes Musashi, to the detriment of the people he encounters and who seek to attach themselves to him. Unable to settle down in the ordinary way, or to simply join a particular clan as a retainer to some noble lord, Musashi embarks on the life of a ronin (masterless samurai) as he wends his way through the feudal world of medieval Japan in his seemingly endless search for perfection. In the process he finds a young woman who loves him and many enemies who seek his destruction, at least in part in repayment for the damage he does them while on his quest. He also crosses swords with many other experts in Japan's martial arts, but it is his early encounter with a Buddhist priest that puts him on the path which will forever after guide his life. Musashi ultimately finds his grail in a duel to the death with a man called Kojiro, who will become his greatest opponent, a sword master famous for his "swallow cut" -- a stroke so fast and deadly that it can slice a swooping, looping bird out of the air in mid-flight. This alone is a challenge worthy of the master which Musashi has become -- and a match which even he may not be up to, for this opponent is surely the finest technician in his art in all Japan. But there is more to swordsmanship than technical skill, as Musashi has learned, and there is more to living one's life than merely preserving it. Musashi attains a sort of peace in preparation for his climactic bout, for he is willing to risk all and even die in order to win against the master of the swallow cut, while applying all the strategy he has learned throughout his tumultuous career to unsettle the man who will oppose him. In the end Musashi became a legend to his countrymen, composing the famous Book of Five Rings -- his contribution to the art of strategy. But what he and Kojiro must do when they finally face each other is a tale in itself -- and a denoument towards which everything else in this book ultimately leads.

By the way, there are a whole slew of good books out there for those into good historical fiction, including a brand new one by Jeff Janoda called Saga: A Novel of Medieval Iceland which details the events surrounding an intriguing episode in Eyrbyggja Saga (Penguin Classics) (one of the most renowned of the original Norse sagas). It tells the tale of a great feud between two chieftains over a little piece of forested land in a place and time in which wood had become nearly as precious as gold. There are some remarkable resonances between the old samurai culture of medieval Japan and that of the medieval Icelanders, and it's worth exploring them through Janoda's new book.

In the end Musashi lived to a fairly ripe old age and, unlike many of his contemporaries, died in his bed after composing the famous Book of Five Rings -- his own contribution to the art of strategy. (And, by the way, The Art of War, another famous book of military strategy was written by the Chinese general Sun T'zu -- not "Lao T'zu.") -- Stuart W. Mirsky (mirsky@ix.netcom.com
