True masterpiece

The book is wonderful for the beginners. For a novice like me, who has interest in archery but always thought it to be a complicated sports. This book has given the minute details as to how to start from the beginning with the basic understanding about archery.In particular the details about the kind of arrows to be used and how to aim at the target was interesting for me. The language is very simple and easily understandable. Thanks to Moritz Steck for sharing his experience.

I think that the book "The Bullseye Masterpiece" is perfect for beginners or people who have only little experience in archery. Advanced archers will enjoy reading it to freshen up their knowledge about archery techniques.
I didn't know much about archery and I especially liked the glossary in the end, where all those archery terms are translated to "normal" English.
The chapter about target panic was very interesting, too. Good to know how to heal it if you are suffering from target panic.

Reviewing the 10th edition of "The Total Outdoorsman Manual"

The Total Outdoorsman Manual: Updated & Expanded by T. Edwards Nickens and the Editors of Field & Stream Magazine is designed to be a one stop resource for the outdoorsman whether he be a novice or experienced. Developed from publishing the magazine for decades, the information contained in this hardback book covers just about everything one would need for any outdoor endeavor. The five detailed sections to this book along with a multipage index are designed for those that don't want to sit in a camping ground with all the creature comforts of home, but instead go to the backcountry far from people and assistance.

After a forward by Field & Stream Editor Anthony Licata and an introduction by Editor-at-Large T. Edward Nickens, it is on to the sections of the book. The first section is on “camping.” After a brief introduction about the belief by T. Edward Nickens that you can separate campers into two groups--those who do just enough to get by and those who do everything letter perfect the first time (just in case)---it is on to information. From the right place to make camp, making the load of your backpack lighter, rain proofing your tent, proper cooking technique for a variety of situations, and more. This section is all about how to properly rough it while also minimizing your impact on nature. Along with detailed information and tips there are the awe inspiring pictures that make you want to throw down everything and head out the door.

It is worth noting that each section is color coded and the individual pages within a section are not numbered. Instead, the tips are numbered and that same numbering system is used for the table of contents and index.

“Fishing” comes next and starts on page 64 according to the table of contents. After another brief introduction to the section, anything fishing is covered. From tips on how to flip a lure, fly casting, differences between types of reels, various baits, cooking fish various ways, reading the waterway, using the paper knot, and lots more, everything related to fishing is covered here. This includes how to store equipment, fixing your kayak, unhooking yourself (having had some painful experiences with that I would suggest avoiding being hooked at all costs), and how to properly boat or paddle downstream. Both bank fishing as well as water craft fishing of various types is covered in this section.

If you are more into hunting that section comes next with a brief introduction followed by the actual information. Weapons of various types and capabilities are discussed, along with ammunition choices, trajectories, stalking tips, cooking tips and more. Items related to archery are included here. Like in the fishing section there is plenty of information here on how to cook various meats as well as the proper way to field dress and pack your meat out of the wild.

Things can go bad in the wilderness and frequently make national and often tragic news. That factor as well as choosing not to number the pages in favor of numbering the tips instead are definite negatives to the book. That being said, the clear and concise information and illustrations, as well as the many photographs, make the book worth your time and an important resource for you and others on your next trip to the great outdoors.

Good for short snippits of reading

This is a great book for short bursts of reading, such as in waiting rooms/bathrooms/by the phone while on hold, etc. It has some interesting info in it and you can open it to any page and read a short article and no need to pick up in the same place later. Good design, nice graphics and photos.

About the Author
K. Elizabeth Soluri received her B.A. from New York University and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She has conducted anthropological field and laboratory research across the United States, including work in Valley Forge National Historical Park, Hawaii, and the central California coast. Elizabeth is especially interested in pedagogy and issues of student learning, and her dissertation research focused on redesigning, implementing, and evaluating effective teaching methods for undergraduate anthropology courses, particularly biological anthropology. Elizabeth has taught anthropology courses at several 2-year and 4-year institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay area.

Sabrina C. Agarwal is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. She received her B.A. and M.Sc. from the University of Toronto and her Ph.D. from the same institution, working in both the Department of Anthropology and the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto. Her research interests are focused broadly upon the age, sex, and gender-related changes in bone quantity and quality, particularly the application of life course approaches to the study of bone maintenance and fragility and its application to dialogues of social identity and embodiment in bioarchaeology. She has authored several related scholarly articles and edited volumes, most recently the volume (with Bonnie Glencross) Social Bioarchaeology (Wiley-Blackwell). She is interested in the philosophies of teaching, and is actively involved in the pedagogical training of current and future college instructors.

I'm halfway through a biochemistry course using this book (Edition 6).

I care about textbooks. Some really go the extra mile to make concepts accessible and memorable. Not this book.

Berg et al are the opposite of exciting. They fail to provide emphasis and perspective that would help concepts stick. Read Richard Feynman's Physics series to see what exciting teaching is all about. He understands what is amazing and what deserves special treatment, use of analogies, etc.

Berg et al use a very stodgy dry style, I think in an effort to avoid saying anything wrong, which is admirable. Feynman on the other hand is not afraid to make lively oversimplifications, and warns you he is, in order to get the basic concept across. Then he slowly develops the concept to a more sophisticated level, sometimes leaving the original model behind, but that's OK because you take an intuitive path similar to the original scientists discovering the concepts.

Berg et al on the other hand insist on a kind of "top-down" approach where often a subject is introduced with sentences thick with generalizations that make no sense (or only vague sense) until more specific examples or detail is developed later. A little top-down is ok if it is simple and gives you a roadmap. Berg et al do it heavy-handedly, often using terms which have not been defined, leaving you to thumb wildly through previous chapters wondering if you missed something.

Top-down explanations are very appealing to writers who already know the material thoroughly. A best-kept-secret of teaching though is that bottom-up explanations (start with building blocks and work up to complex concepts) is really how powerful learning takes place. It's how the concepts were developed in the first place; it's how we learned in kindergarten.

To be fair, my organic (and inorganic) chemistry background is weak, as perhaps with many biology students. Berg et al assume you know chemistry thoroughly, and that is understandable. But aside from that, the language and writing style is simply dense, dry, and requires you pay close attention to each word in the sentence so you don't misinterpret what is being said. Again, compare it to Feynman's writing. The concepts are not easy in his books, but you really feel caught up in his explanations.

Using Berg/Stryer is exhausting, not what I admire in a textbook. I encourage students to make frequent trips to the index, as quick visits to later chapters may very well help you understand an earlier chapter better (for instance tRNA mechanisms). Or just read it back to front, it might flow better that way :) By the way, I agree with other reviewers that criticize the index as being mediocre (does not indicate where the prime definition of terms are), and in general the authors do not seem to understand the importance of defining terms clearly and emphatically prior to referencing them.

I think often reviewers that give favorable reviews to books such as this already know the material so of course the sentences full of generalizations and undefined terms make perfect sense. However, the true value of a textbook is careful organization, defining of terms, making distinctions, building up of concepts out of simpler ideas, demystifying convoluted concepts, highlighting what is important, and clearly pointing out when simplified results of non-obvious concepts are employed (such as reaction rates, equilibrium constants). This book gets low grades for that kind of teaching.

On the other hand, I've noticed that most biochemistry books just blast you with new substances, sentence after sentence, with little substantiating or clarifying logic, as if you are on a memorization marathon; so I can't suggest a better single alternative at this time. Someone needs to write a book with the approach of imparting a usable set of knowledge with some kind of theme (such as understanding mechanisms to fight cancer). Perhaps the field is just so vast that one must wade in hip deep and muck around for several years until some light begins to dawn. I would like to believe a good book can be written with a building block approach.

The book does get high grades for excellent summaries at the ends of the chapters and additional (but I've seen more) references. The authors take their duties very seriously to present correct and accurate information. They are just not the most gifted writer-teachers to come along. Actually, I should say not the most gifted "communicators", as they are highly competent writers, which in a way works against them. I will say it is a pleasure to find authors who use the word "comprise" correctly - kudos for that!

As I reach the end of the course, which covered about 2/3 of the book, my opinion has not changed. Reading the book is tough sledding for me and I'm digging into basic chemistry, organic chemistry, and even physical chemistry (to better understand free energy concepts) to really get a feel for what drives these biochemical processes. I also am realizing that one probably would benefit greatly from some cellular biology to get a perspective on the metabolic processes described in this book. The mechanisms seem to appear magically out of nowhere, as if in a vacuum. I think real understanding will involve delving more into why certain things don't happen, how the processes are controlled, where the processes happen, etc.

I can't overly criticize the presentation until I find a better alternative (but I have already been exposed to too much to look with fresh eyes again) -- perhaps the subject is just so incredibly vast that it requires many, many rereadings and additional texts -- but I just feel there must be a better way to make the concepts stick in an introductory book. It is a matter of style as well as organization.

Toxicology Cards are fun and engaging

I found these flashcards to be very entertaining. They make it easy to memorize otherwise complicated material. The imagery is very memorable and at times, hilarious. I recognize various pop culture references that Kloss and Bruce make as I am a product of the 1980's.

As a designer and artist myself, I recognize the high level of quality of these cards. I really enjoy looking at them and would highly recommend this set. It even makes for a great coffee table book, even for people not in the medical field.

Someone hire these dudes to redo ALL medical school curriculum

Great study tool for any student studying for STEP, residents in the ED, or physicians wanting to brush up a complicated topic. The cards have great, clean illustrations, and are easy to remember because of the humor and pop culture references. It's obvious a LOT of effort went into producing these cards--every detail is meaningful and condenses topics into a single image. It's also the most entertaining studying I've ever done. I'll never pour over endless paragraphs of text again! This is where it's at. Excuse me while I go "recycle" my other study books in the bonfire outside.

This book is an absolute essential for anyone with steam heat. I think that Dan's other book, The Lost Art of Steam Heating, is targeted more to heating contractors and people with seriously "knuckleheaded" systems (messed up systems). This book is not as in-depth, but it does still cover the major fundamentals fairly well.

If you have steam heat, this book can help you get the most out of your system. It will show you how to make it run more quietly, more efficiently, more effectively, and how to make it last much longer. Many of the things in the book are things that an average home-owner can tackle, but it still isn't too basic for a very handy home-owner. Even if you have no interest in doing the work yourself, I think you should still get this book. Steam heat really is a lost art, and there aren't a lot of steamheads our there who know what their doing (though Dan's site heatinghelp.com can help you find the ones that do). This book can help you be sure that the people you hire are doing the right thing and not making your system worse.

Dan writes clearly and humorously. He has a knack for explaining technical topics in a way that is both clear and comprehensive. My wife has no interest in steam heating, but she is tempted to read the book based on me sharing some of the passages. It really is a joy to read.

If you're new to steam heat, this is a great companion book to Dan Holohan's other two books. Beyond that, this book delves into more advanced areas of steam heat that are perfect for a homeowner to know about. Having never worked with a steam heat system before, I comfortably understand how mine works now.

I haven't read the book yet, but I was schocked and surprised by the bad quality of the printing (photocopied) and outrageous price. More than US$ 100,00. it is hard covered allright, but the price is even harder.

Missing very important information

The fundamental difference between node and all other popular web languages is the asynchronous approach. This book merely acknowledges this concept and doesn't spend any time explaining the event loop, call stack, or key differences for people who are already well versed in other languages. There is no discussion of promises on the server side and no mention of design patterns specific to the callback-happy world of node.

Further, this book spends a lot of time explaining how to do things the hard way. It demonstrates terribly messy page controllers and routers that will quickly grow to unsustainable size without once mentioning industry standard tools such as Express that are meant to avoid these problems. If you follow this book's example, you'll end up with a bloated but well archtected app that wastes lots of code space and is a nightmare to maintain.

Finally, the book suffers several small grammatical errors. Normally, I wouldn't note this, but in a technical manual non-parsing sentences can lead to misinterpretation.

It is also worth noting that this book does not once mention ES6 or any of the major changes that are now supported.

I recommend this book only to people who already understand node well but want a guided approach to solving some core concepts they may have missed such as TDD, restful design, or real-time chat.

Great for a started

This is a great book, for somebody who is starting his first application in Node.JS. it explains in detail how to start your own application, how Node.JS works and simple brings you into the world of Node.JS which is diferent from a standart request/thread application we where used to produce in PHP or ASP.
