About the Author
Dr. Manoj Desai began his career in the pharmaceutical industry at Pfizer Inc, Central Research Division, Groton, CT (1986-1994) before moving to Chiron Corporation (1994-2003) as Director of medicinal chemistry; he was promoted to Vice President, lead discovery and medicinal chemistry (2000). In October 2003, he was appointed Vice President of medicinal chemistry at Gilead Sciences. At Pfizer, he was responsible for the medicinal chemistry efforts that lead to the discovery of oral Substance P antagonist CP-99994 which became the basis for the discovery of the new anti-emetics. At Chiron he formulated macrobead technology for the synthesis and screening of compound libraries for HTS and built the medicinal chemistry department with focus on kinase inhibitors. At Gilead, he was an active proponent to develop a pharmacoenhancer devoid of antiviral activity to improve the pharmacokinetics of integrase inhibitor elvitegravir. These efforts led to the discovery of Cobicistat which is one of components of StribildTM that was approved by FDA in August 2012 for the treatment of HIV infection. He is co-inventor on patents of Cobicistat (US 8,148,374), StribildTM and Ledipasvir (US 8,273,341; Phase III). Furthermore, his group at Gilead has advanced numerous compounds into clinical development for the treatment of antiviral diseases, cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Desai obtained Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the M.S. University of Baroda in 1981 working with Dr. Sukh Dev and then carried out post-doctoral fellowships at Purdue University working with Professor Herbert C. Brown (19981-1983) and at Harvard University with Professor Elias J. Corey (1983-1986). During his postdoctoral studies, he worked on natural product isolation, development of asymmetric synthetic methods using organoboranes and total synthesis of complex natural products such as retigeranic acid, -trans bergamotene and ginkgolide B.

He has co-authored >60 publications in peer reviewed journals and is an inventor on >25 issued patents. Furthermore, Dr. Desai is Editor-in-Chief for Annual Reports in Medicinal chemistry (2012-current), and have co-edited Comprehensive Medicinal Chemistry II (volume 7). In 2013, he co-edited book titled “Successful Strategies for the Discovery of Antiviral Drugs”.

Quick, light, entertaining

The author certainly gets what the ROF books are all about, and avoids getting bogged down in excessive detail. This is written in a very Eric Flint pacing, with the story progressing quickly.

In only 90 pages, there just isn't any great character development. In fact, we just barely get a chance to know them.

It feels a lot like the first third of a novel, rather than a novella. I say that not so much as a slam, but in the hope that there is more to come. It's well written, and it captures the sense of adventure that makes this series great.

Good little story

This is a perfectly nice little (very short) novel. Enjoyed the book, but…..reason for the 3 is that the character development although good, falls far short of what I have become used to in the ring of fire series. This is in essence a very pleasant, Long - Short story. Would have liked a little more technical detail about what and how steel would be produced using the stories scenario and more development of the characters.

As a general statement concerning the series as a whole, I would like to see in all of the Ring of Fire series some consideration given to differing standards of beauty. The downtime female protagonist is "beautiful", but in reality how would a typical uptime man view a woman with very hairy legs and other body parts. Obviously standards of beauty change with both exposure and experience but I've always been bothered by the "love at first site scenarios" in the Ring series, especially in the 1632 and 1633 time frame before experience has reeducated our standards of beauty. The dress of the day would obscure or conceal some of these beauty differences but still…….

I have long been a fan of the alternative history Ring of Fire series, published by Baen, that began with Eric Flint's "1632." Recently some worthy books could not fit into Baen's overall publishing schedules and are being published by the new Ring of Fire Press Fiction. This book describes the complexity of introducing and building a steel industry in the 1600's in a well told story.

An Interesting, but Hard Text

The Struggle for the American Curriculum is a historical exploration of the changes that occurred in American education. It deals with reforms and the philosophies with gave curriculum its shape. In this book, Herbert M. Kliebard seeks to present a fair and balanced recount of the people and events, who and which fashioned the course of education during first fifty or so years of the twentieth century. In many ways, it is Kliebard's "search for progressive education."
The Struggle for the American Curriculum is a historical overview of pretty much the first fifty years of curriculum formation and philosophy in the 1900s. There are two aspects worth highlighting about this book. One is its comprehensive historical account of the development of curriculum theory and the other is Kliebard's special attention to "progressive education."
The historical overview is very comprehensive as mentioned before. Every major "player" of curriculum and education theory is explored and discussed. For instance, John Dewey is significantly and appropriately studied. His curriculum and its impact is given its full due. Not only is Dewey examined, but also Eliot, the Committee of Ten, and so forth. This book also shows how different movements and reforms, such as social Meliorism and vocationalism, took shape, reached their peaks, and eventually took its place in the educational curricular mosaic.
Yet, most interesting is Kliebard's last chapter on "progressive education." This seems to be his own interpretation in the curriculum debate. The author cites Cremin in defining "progressive education." It is expanding schooling to health and occupational competence, the application of scientific research for teaching purposes, and customizing instruction for the different types of students. Yet, this is only a definition. Kliebard is interested in "cleaning up" what progressive education is. He is keenly aware of the struggle for each philosophy and theory to become the definition. It is the subject of his book and the struggle which continues today.
Overall, Kliebard's book is a very tedious work that is very hard to get into. The way he portrays the evolution of curricular thought is very detailed and hard to follow for a beginning student of curriculum design. Kliebard does not make good use of primary sources. One may wish that he provided more samples of the original work of figures such as Dewey. There are no tables, charts, or diagrams to help comprehend the various views and movements. In this way, the book is somewhat hard to follow. This is the overall weakness.
Yet, Kliebard does a fine job in presenting all the views, movements, and people who impacted curriculum design. His attention to detail is admirable and helps a beginner become acquainted with the humanists, child-study people, the social efficiency educators, and social meliorists. Indeed, this book is very helpful in this fashion.
Once can also appreciate Kliebard's fair treatment of all the views and influential figures of curriculum. In fact, it is not apparent which side he takes. He raises the strengths and weaknesses of each viewpoint in an equal manner. Therefore, he depicts the "struggle" for the American curriculum in a very succinct fashion. Kliebard does an admirable job in representing the facts in a straightforward and seemingly unbiased manner.

A Neutral, Thorough, Political History

I chose Kleibard's book as my first to read on the topics of History of Education, and History of Curriculum Development, and I'm glad I did. He concentrates on a key period of American education history (1893-1958), and begins by describing several competing interest groups: 1) the "humanists", who believe that the traditional academic curriculum provides great value, 2) the "developmentalists", who believe elementary and high school curriculum should be driven by the interests of the students (as adults understand those interests through scientific study), 3) the "social efficiency" group, who believe that time in the classroom is precious and needs to be focused on what students will need in their adult lives, and 4) the "social ameliorists", who think that students should be taught to challenge the flaws of society in order to improve it. All but the humanists identified themselves as part of the "progressive education" movement. (In fact, even some of the humanists claimed the "progressive" mantle.) Each group is well aware of the importance of schooling, as high school enrollment skyrockets, and waves of immigration add to the diversity of the student population.

Kleibard then leads us through the period, showing how those four groups battled for influence, at times combining with each other and at other times clashing. Their efforts led to the introduction of industrial and vocational education in the schools, experiments that based schooling around projects, attempts to eliminate some subjects (most successfully with Latin and ancient history) and merge others (partially successfully with the creation of English, Social Studies, and Biology as combinations of different subspecialties), and later, the introduction of "life adjustment" classes ("Katie Goes on a Date") in the early 1950s.

I found the overall theme of the four contending groups to be an easy way to approach the material, and when I read more in the future, I look forward to seeing whether this theme holds up. Kleibard tries hard to be objective about the actual value of these philosophies--perhaps too much so. As one reviewer mentions, the book could perhaps have used tables that compare them more explicitly. I found myself wondering whether he avoided that analysis to keep the book to a reasonable length, to avoid favoritism, or even because the groups themselves weren't as coherent as his narrative needs them to be.

Since he's not picking favorites, his book becomes a story of the horse race between the various contenders. (Is it spoiling the ending to say that the humanists and social efficiency folks come out on top--at least at the end of this period?) For someone like me, looking for an overall narrative that can put future reading in context, Kleibard's book seems to lay a solid foundation.

(P.S. There's a running theme where John Dewey attempts to split the difference between the various groups, telling everyone they've got it slightly wrong, redefining terms almost to the point of confusion, and generally sitting above the fray, maintaining a towering reputation while not really effecting much change. Kleibard comes across as frustrated with Dewey, wishing that he'd have taken the leadership role that others seemed to want to give him.)

Review of Peanut Butter Principles by Eric Franklin

"Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is a very insightful and encouraging book. Mr. Franklin touches on some very good points on how to encourage children and others to reach their full potential. In Chapter 16, Mr. Franklin brings up his faith and points out something I, myself have learned, that, like the title of the chapter, "Faith Makes all Things Possible Not Easy", is very true. As the author points out, our journey to reach our full potential and to make our lives a success is not easy, but with hard work and perseverence it is possible. Mr. Franklin speaks about how to build up the child's self esteem when helping them. He mentions that they should think for themselves as opposed to giving the child the answers or completing a task for them. Mr. Franklin tells us the importance of persevering in our endeavors and not giving up so easily.

I agree with "Peanut Butter Principles" by Mr. Eric Franklin. Thank you sir, for a very enlightening book, which I, myself can take into account for my own life. I highly recommend "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin for anyone, not just parents, teachers or mentors. It has some very excellent guidelines anyone can put to use in their lives. "Peanut Butter Principles" by Eric Franklin is most definitely 'my cup of tea'!!!

Very practical and insightful!

I just read this book after sending my last child out of the nest. I only wish I could have read it years ago...it would be a great motivator during those tough years. In thinking about my three kids, these are the three princlples that I have seen play out for them:

#10 The difference between a goal and a dream is a deadline.
#12 Talent and intellect does always add up to success. Perseverance does.
#20 Don't worry about what you don't know. Do what you know.

Timeless principles your grandparents taught your parents

Eric Franklin has written a truly useful book for instilling success oriented character traits in your children through 47 Leadership Lessons. In the preface he writes that he grew up 'solidly middle class' and it shows in his lessons. There's nothing here about attachment theory or evolutionary psychology. Instead he has chapters titled Life Is Not Fair. Get Over It, and Your Life Is Not a Rehearsal. My favorite is Everything Happens For A Reason, But Sometimes The Reason Is You're Stupid And You Make Poor Decisions. In five sections he walks readers through principles about self, talent, life lessons, relationships, and good choices. The text is breezy and to the point and Franklin draws widely from his own experiences.

Your grandparents probably took most of these lessons as self evident. You and your parents a little less so. Much of this will be entirely foreign to your children. But just like the new economy and new math we continue to learn that there is nothing new and that there are no short cuts to success and good character. Franklin gives an excellent path for parents and their children.

Hopefully parents will read it to each other as well.

excellent suzuki style training for newbie fiddlers

my daughter and i (7 and 42, respectively) have been taking suzuki violin lessons together and recently decided to try some fiddling. o'connor's approach follows the suzuki method, making it very understandable. he has added interesting historical information about many of the songs and styles. the tunes are familiar so they are fun to play, and many of them can be played by a twinkler without any additional skills -- expanding her repertoire so easily has been very gratifying for my daughter. as an adult, i don't find o'connor's books to be as complete as a training method, so they're not really a replacement for suzuki, but they are fun and his arrangements are playable by a newbie like myself. we have books 1 & 2 and they are excellent additions to our musical training.

Has its uses but jumps around too much to be core material

I am a Suzuki teacher and I have the O'Connor books 1 and 2 to use as, I admit, supplemental material. I am very open to the idea of teaching kids pedagogically using American tunes. I have also taught all of my students how to improvise (even before these books).

My major qualm with the O'Connor method is that it does not teach BASIC violin technique as smoothly as the Suzuki books. Each Suzuki piece builds on itself by adding one new technique. For example, once the student learns the twinkle variations and twinkle theme, Lightly Row adds using the individual second finger. Every other skill required to play Lightly Row aside from the individual 2 is the same as Twinkle Theme.

In the O'Connor method he starts off with three Boil Em' Cabbage Down variations. Basically, three of the twinkle variations. The next piece in the books is called Beautiful Skies. In order to play this piece, the student must be able to string cross while changing bow directions (something not covered in his Boil Em' Cabbage variations), be able to quickly change bow patterns (long notes vs. short notes), and start figuring out how to use the third finger more efficiently. That's a huge jump in skills required if this was the only book you were learning from.

However, if this is not the only book you plan on using to teach, it is a nice collection of fiddle tunes. It also makes for a smooth introduction to the fiddling style if the student already knows how to play.

Great Fiddle Method book!

OConnor presents fiddling in an easy step by step process. It is a fun way for students to learn the violin. Historical information about the fiddle pieces are also included with each song. My son and daughter have both enjoyed this book as a supplement to their classical violin method books.

spelbinding meeting

as a student of the archaeology department of the aristotele university of thessaloniki i had a cource called "an introduction to prehistorical civilization".all over the year i did not have a clue what prehistory because i paid no attention to the lessons given although evey friday morning i was inside the classroom. the exams were close,i had to do something urgentely. to tell the truth i didn`t expect to find such a book to give me the essential knowledge i needed to understand this part of history and to give the gourage to continue reading and learning on this subject.easy to read and to understand too. lovely and encouraging writing giving all sort of primary ( further more)information on the theme discussed. i honestly believe it was a spelbinding meeting with this book that i will never forget.
