About the Author
Ellie Marney was born in the tropical northeast of Australia, and has lived in Indonesia, Singapore and India. Now she writes, teaches, talks about kids' literature at libraries and schools, and gardens when she can, while living in a country idyll (actually a very messy wooden house on ten acres with a dog and lots of chickens) near Castlemaine, in north-central Victoria. Even though she often forgets things and lets the housework go, her partner and four sons still love her. Ellie's short stories for adults have won awards and been published in various anthologies. Every Word is her second novel for young adults.

Best Sherlock Holmes YA ever!

HOLY CRACKERS!!
Yes, that was my first reaction upon finishing the book and I still find it hard to write a coherent review for this!
A warning to those in the US, this book will be releasing later this year over there, so although this is a finished AUS copy, do not read if you want to avoid any and all sort of spoilers, because I'm not sure if I'll manage a completely spoiler free review!
And another warning, there might be some spoilers for Every Breath, if you haven't read it or the summary for this one, so please, go read book 1 now!
I simply devoured and loved Every Breath and I was dying to get my hands of Every Word and this one was yet another case of book I stayed up all night reading till I finished it! Thank goodness for working the late afternoon shift!
Rachel's parents have reacted like normal parents would and they have some trust issues with their girl and are putting limits on the time she spends with Mycroft and how she spends it, and although I'm angry because they are interfering with my ship, I so bloody well agree with them trying to act like parents would! The family is very present here in this series, and both a source of strenght and conflict for both Rachel and Mycroft. I adore Rachel's relationship with her brother, and how he was both protective and supportive and found himself conflicted trying to mediate between Rachel and their parents.
Most of the book moves the action from Australia to London and Oxford, and although that was a massive move and change for Rachel, that meant going to familiar waters for me. Mycroft left for London without telling Rachel, a rather jerk move, and Rachel decided to go to London after him in a move that probably was the least smart but that also made a lot of sense, given their relationship and what motivated Mycroft to go to London in the first place.
This book was even more gritty and harsh than the first one, because not only we deal with someone that was murdered but also with kidnapping and torture, there's crime investigating, an autopsy is done and there's also a visit to 221 Baker's Street. I think I've already said this before, but this book was a serious page turner, not only because there's plenty of action and tension, but also because the chemistry and the relationship between Mycroft and Rachel is both amazing and painful!
Mycroft took off without further thought or consideration and he simply was one way mind only about his quest to find answers about his parents' case. Rachel followed him and knew it would hurt her but she was not just a great girlfriend but mostly a very good friend. And once Mycroft got out of the fog in his mind, he literally threw himself in harms way for Rachel. These two have an epic chemistry and I just want them together for good but holy s*** do they seem to drag each other into danger! But they also help each other out of it rather epically!
Long story short, this is a bloody epic and wild ride of a book, both emotionally and when it comes to the plot. We discover many things about the past and the biggest shocker comes by the end of the book, so I'm now here on pins and needles waiting for my copy of the third and final book in the trilogy so I can put myself and my emotions through hell and back again!
If you haven't started this series yet, please do! It's contemporary, it's gritty, it's also a reimagining of Sherlock Holmes with a stronger and brighter (and female) Wat(ts)on and a ship to rule all ships. Very much deserving of 5 stars!!

In this second installment of the Every series, Mycroft has been an apprentice to the forensic scientist, Professor Walsh, while Rachel has taken up roller derby. It picks up not long after the events of Every Breath with Rachel and Mycroft still on lockdown by Rachel’s parents. It is a nice change of pace in a YA book to have parents that actually monitor their own kids.
James Mycroft survived the traumatic experience from the first book with a few physical reminders, but his character seems even more determined in his forensic studies. A carjacking accident in London hits too close to home from him, reminding him of his dark past with his parents, and in this book we really get a chance to see just how broken Mycroft is.
In this book, Rachel Watts has found an adrenaline high from being with Mycroft and uses roller derby as an outlet from the emotional trauma of Every Breath. Rachel isn’t as interested in crime solving as Mycroft. She doesn’t ever act interested in solving the murder, but when she finds a clue she runs with it full force. She even makes a few deductions of her own that helps the investigators. When Mycroft leaves for London she doesn’t follow him as his girlfriend, but as a best friend. I really like that aspect of her personality; she doesn’t have to be ‘with’ Mycroft to be there for him.
Mike is a character that was really shinning for me in this book. Mike is Rachel’s older brother and though he doesn’t have much presence in the story he plays a major part. I wouldn’t mind if Mike decided to tag along with Rachel and Mycroft in the next book.
Alicia is Mike’s girlfriend and Rachel’s ticket to London. Adding Alicia really helped the plot because Rachel had no idea where anything was or how to travel in London and Alicia was a key character to get her settled. I’ve read books where the characters just magically know where to go and how to get there even if they’ve never been in the city, and it just doesn’t work well. Plus, Alicia and Mike make a very cute couple!
The plot, of course, is highly improbable (teens at crime scenes). BUT, it’s not bad in the sense that the author tried to make up excuses on why her characters were getting special treatment. It’s a YA Sherlockian book, so I went into the book knowing the plot was going to be a bit unbelievable. That aside, I loved the mystery in this book. There’s so much going on at once and became way bigger than I originally thought. And again, there’s a slight hint that we may have a Moriarty character coming soon!
Mycroft goes though the story not only solving the crime, but also trying to solve the mystery of his parents’ death, figuring out how to fix himself of his brokenness, and figuring out what part Rachel should play in his life. We also get to see more of his past as he becomes more open with Rachel.
The romance seems a little less romantic and a lot more teenage lust-a-thon. Don’t get me wrong, there are still sweet moments, but come on guys! There’s a proper time for a snog and and not-so-proper time. Layman terms: Don’t snog when your life is in danger!
Overall, Every Word is a strong sequel and every bit as entertaining as its predecessor. I recommend to readers who like YA crime/mystery with romance thrown in or for anyone that just plain out loves Sherlockian re-writes.

Brilliant! Amazing! Perfect!

I actually finished reading Every Word a few months back but didn't post a review because I was just so blown away and couldn't find the words to adequately express my love for it. And now, months later, I still don't have the right words to sum it up. But the story is so fantastic that I have to say something, even if those words could never do the book justice. Just please, excuse my rambling and scattered thoughts.
When I read the first book in this series, Every Breath, I was immediately drawn into the story and when I got to the end I was so satisfied and happy to have discovered the writing of Ellie Marney. When Every Word came up for review I eagerly put up my hand. Little did I know what I was stepping into and how much this book would impress me and mess with my emotions.
Every Word picks up a little way after Every Breath, and it doesn't take long for things to quickly heat up. Mycroft suddenly jumps on a plane to London to investigate a case very similar to the accident that killed his parents. Rachel is shocked, confused and angry since Mycroft failed to inform her that he was leaving. But after a little thought and investigation she decides to follow Mycroft and offer him whatever help and support he needs.
'I'm struck, in this moment, by the sheer Englishness of him. I mean, I knew he was English, but now it hits me - his height, his wild hair, the leanness of his body, the black jeans and the scuffed shoes, hid red-and-white striped jacket... '
I adore James Mycroft. I love him with everything that I have. There is something about a broken boy that I'm immensely attracted to. I can't help it. He carries around this past that is full of heartache and it tortures him. It's so heavy and the weight of it drags him down. It's like he doesn't believe he deserves happiness and love. He broke me in this book. My heart ached for his pain.
The thing that I love about Rachel is her strength and her loyalty. They are such wonderful qualities to possess and she has them in spades. She is so supportive of Mycroft. She puts aside her feelings to be what he needs her to be. Yes, she can be impulsive at times, but that's also a part of her charm. In this book she is amazing and brilliant and strong and loyal and caring. I was just blown away by her.
'A look, a word, a scent - I'm like a tuning fork that resonates to one deep-thrumming pitch. The sound of Mycroft's voice is enough to send wings through my insides, make my skin go nuclear. And a touch, even a gentle one...'
Ellie Marney portrays Rachel and Mycroft so expertly. Teenagers are impulsive. They make rash decisions. They swear. They are raging hormones. And we get all of those in this series. Their chemistry is amazing. Not just in the physical sense, which is scorching, but they click so well on every level.
The tension, the suspense, the mystery, the action... It was perfect. Absolutely perfect. And can I say chapter eighteen!! Oh. My. God!!! The emotions that I went through just in that one chapter alone. I was a mess!! But it was also more than that one chapter. I found this book to be much more detailed and descriptive than the first one. Everything seemed heightened to me. The violence, Mycroft's pain, Rachel and Mycroft's attraction... I loved every minute of it.
I love this series. I love this author. I want Ellie Marney and her books to have all the high praise and all the accolades that they so richly deserve. Beautifully descriptive and detailed, without being overly so. It's the easiest thing in the world to picture exactly what the author is describing. Every Word, is without a doubt in my top ten books read in 2014. Heck it could even be in my top five.
